Boston Training Week 4
Monday, 12/30
AM: 16 easy, pace 9:11
PM: 5 recovery, plus 3xplank
Plank works wonders for my back.
Tuesday, 12/31
AM: 12 easy, pace 10:05
PM: 4 recovery
Wednesday, 1/1
9 easy, pace 10:12
Worked about 4 hours in the yard cleaning up the leaves, a good strength workout?
Thursday, 1/2
138lbs
6 recovery
Friday, 1/3
139lbs
I can't believe how much I ate/drunk during the holiday.
6xhill, overall 6 miles.
I was still tired, but very glad I was able to keep the hill training going and my legs started getting used to go fast while tired.
5 miles at noon.
3 in the afternoon.
Saturday, 1/4
8 with 7:08, 7:05 at mile 5 and 6. I am happy with my progress of getting used to running fast.
Sunday, 1/5
16
Weekly: 90, a mpw PR.
I don't think I will ever hit this number again this cycle.

and aerobic conditioning, too. I can't imagine doing 90 miles in a week, much less the time it would take me. Good job.

I only worked Thursday and Friday, and was shooting for 100 just for fun, but couldn't pull it off. Hat off to you and others doing this and more regularly.
Btw, I am taking your approach to eat more protein and less carb and hope I can lose some as well as recover better. Recovery is always my weakness. I was not eating much at all last year with a record mileage, but didn't lose any. Lets see what happens.

Had to, but I don't expect I can sustain at 90. 70-80 is a must though.

Still, 70-80 means that you just might be serious about a PR.

I am now 2 and half minutes slower in half than when I ran 2:58:35 PR. So a PR in Boston will be very satisfying. If I can do that, I will put the hammer down and add maybe another 10 miles in the fall cycle for a solid base. Next year, its all about racing on flat courses ...

I was 2+ minutes slower with my HM time this past year, but still achieved a PR. You can do it!!

Re: Comeback
Boston Training Week 5
Monday, 1/6
AM: Strength training, skipped the usual 2-3 miles warmup cause too cold, like sub 20, outside.
Noon: About 2 miles stair master thing, plus 2 miles running. I logged 4 miles.
Tuesday, 1/7
AM: 9-10xhill, lost count, heehee. Overall 6 miles.
Noon: 6 easy. Though I really felt sick on TM these days, today no exception, my pace naturally picked up till 8. I think the plan to adapt a little faster running is working.

I've never heard the phrase "sub 20" I guess it's not too cold around here unless it's sub zero

I don't think I've ran in sub-20 air temps ever. I'm so sheltered.

Re: Comeback
I think that eating more good protein will help you and aid in a quicker recovery. The problem with not losing any weight last year was due to not eating much. That is a classic mistake a lot of people make thinking that if they don't eat they will lose weight. When actually the opposite happens you will normally gain weight.Jerry wrote:Schuey wrote:Common Jerry you can hit 90 miles every week. Welcome to the high mileage club! I have found over the years that the commitment is not only in running but also having the same commitment and motivation with diet. The good thing for us guys that are getting older not only does the eating well help aid or goals in running but also helps benefit our overall health!

Re: Comeback
I will have to add that I have never ran a half marathon time that would equal my marathon time. Actually my PR marathon time would suggest that I should run a faster half then what I have actually ran.Nick Morris wrote:Jerry wrote:Nick Morris wrote:Jerry wrote:Julie wrote:Wow, Jerry. For me I find the training between the two races to be different and the focus is different. My focus for the marathon distance and above is all about aerobic and holding a steady/even pace for as long as I can. So, I spend a lot of time running a lot of miles at easy pace. By doing this I believe that I sacrifice some of the speed work that is need to run a faster half.
Bottom line is that I would not judge what you can do in the marathon based off your half time, especially if your training for the two is different.

I'm just the opposite in that my half marathon times (still) indicate a faster marathon by 10 min or so, and they always have. I found though that when I added miles, I just kept slowing down . Couldn't be age - no way.

Well I think for the three of us age does play in to a certain point. What i do find interesting is how different training has different affects on your racing times over different distances. That also shows how cool of a sport (endurance) running really is, no one right way to accomplish different goals!

I think it's very greatly based on how you train. I have a buddy who easily beats me at shorter races and this fall is the closest he's come to me at the marathon distance and he was still 3 minutes behind me on an easier course. He also does a whole lot more short, fast stuff and doesn't hit the mid week 12-14 milers that I do during a training cycle.

Just never tell him that endurance is key and he'll always be behind you.

Re: Comeback
I don't care any more. It is what it is. I just need to recognize the pattern when I use my half time to decide full goal.Schuey wrote:Michele \"1L" Keane wrote:I'm just the opposite in that my half marathon times (still) indicate a faster marathon by 10 min or so, and they always have. Luckily, I started using your way of range goal, then race by feel. All I need is to have a solid training cycle and good weather.
For Boston, it's simple. If I train well, I want a PR. I don't do hills, so no matter how well I train, I will just target a half minute PR. This year is about building back my base. Next year, I am going all out on flat courses ...
