By the way, Thursday's 8 mile run marked my first squishy shoe event of the summer! Usually, I have to wait until I get up into the teens before that happens. Lost 6 pounds of water on that run.
Yeah Oz, that is what Larry said. Now, Wxman57 has not said anything, but Larry is usually spot on with his forecasts ( i.e our ice storm this past year). When he states cool down, he is mentioning climo. Remember, it is usually around the first week of September we get a front that dries out ( ok, wrong term here) everything and makes it livable. That is what he is thinking. Now the real cooldowns, that would be September 24-25.
We Did It. We Did It. Sigh
Well, my run has been pushed back to tonight. Again, I just do not feel like running, but I have to get it in. I will run while the little is sleeping.

Feel the burn, sucker . Even we are starting to cool down - supposed to hit 68 tonight! Yeah baby! Of course, the 60s are a tease and we will be back to normal in a couple of days. We even got a brief break from the humidity - felt so nice today! Hang in there - it won't last forever...

The ridge is supposed to move ever so slightly next Wednesday. I am sure hoping. I have never seen a high pressure ridge stay parked for 3 months. Wow. Thank you to all and have great runs. I did not run yesterday. I will run at 12 noon today.
Worrying
I have been running for 31 years. During those years, I have seen lows and highs. I have seen things in between. I can complain about this summer until the cows come home, but I must say it has been the worst on me yet. I find myself thinking that running is just a chore. That I am actually "relieved" when I put a run off until later or the next day. I have never felt like that. I find that I am tired and cranky alot. I spoke with Joel not too long ago and he stated there are (for the first time in 2 years) days he just did not want to run. My best friend Joel had the Hottest Half this past weekend to run. Well, his hip was bothering him, so he did not run. He felt relieved that he did not run. I am actually, before I run in an hour, worried about this run. I have run 7 milers until the cows come home, but for the last month, they have not been comfortable. I miss that. Now, will I run? Yes. It is in my blood. I just miss the days of it being easy. Just venting.
Re: Clawing My Way Back
With what you've all been living through down there, nobody in their right mind would blame you for venting, or for putting off some runs. This summer just has to suck the life right out of anyone, let alone a runner.

Yeah Seth, I am listening to Robert Tepper's No Easy Way Out to motivate me before I go run. I am grasping at anything. I do know it will be cold ( ok, 76) when I get to the YMCA, but it will be humid as all get out. I am just wanting to get it done. LOL. This summer is the worst we have ever had on recorded history. Last summer was a breeze compared to this.
Lunchbreak Running
First, the positives. That was the fastest and longest I have run in a week and a half. Second, it was not bad. Humid, but not bad. There were times near mile 4 and 5 that I could not breathe, but hey, who is counting. The knot in my gastroc/calf was not that bad. I had to stretch it twice. The negatives. I had to stop four times, 5 seconds each, to get a sip of Powerade. My body is still trying to deal with this heat. The knots were stretched twice during those 5 second stops. The run was still a chore. It was a little better, but still a chore. On the whole, not bad. Will get back at it tomorrow. I ran a 52:30 for 7 miles. I was going to, if I have time today after work, jog 3-5 miles to loosen the legs up. We shall see. Oh and also Pilates tonight. I have a string of three in a row.
Summer of Dust
Summer is great. Summer is groovy. Summer is far out. I hate Summer. Sigh...

Loosening Up
This was a warmup run before the big one tonight. Let me say this. This was the most comfortable run I have had in a long long time. (3 miles in 27 minutes) I started at a 10 minute pace and by the 1.5 mile mark, increased it to a 7:54 pace until the three mile mark. Again, very comfortable. Does this mean I have to do a warmup before every run. Sigh. Tonight, it is 7 miles. I can live with a 55:30 or under. I can also say that my soleus loosened up after this warm up. Humm. I have 10 miles this week.
Re: Clawing My Way Back
Wow, and I was feeling selfishly bad...you TX folks are REALLY having it bad. Good you're getting some mileage down. Even as bad as it makes you feel, in the long run it takes the heebeegeebee's away

Yeah we have had this sucker over us for THREE months. THREE months. We have had the hottest summer ever. We are now trending for the hottest August ever. When I mean hottest ever, our average for the hottest August was 87.7. We are at 90.8. That is over three degrees. That is like an 8.0 earthquake in meteorological terms. .5 is major news. Right now, if we continue, our average high will be 101.2. The normal average high is 94. Yeah, this has been a hot and dry ( we are 20 inches below normal) summer.

ANOTHER VERY WARM AFTERNOON TODAY ACROSS SOUTHEAST TEXAS.
MOST INLAND LOCATIONS HAVE ALREADY REACHED OR EXCEEDED 100 DEGREES
AS OF 3PM...INCLUDING INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT. THIS EXTENDS THE
STREAK OF CONSECUTIVE 100 DEGREE DAYS IN HOUSTON TO 17.
VERY LITTLE CHANGE IN THE OVERALL PATTERN EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS AS THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE REMAINS CENTERED TO OUR
WEST. A FEW MORE CLOUDS ARE EXPECTED ON THURSDAY AS AN AREA OF
MID LEVEL MOISTURE MOVES IN FROM THE NORTHEAST BUT SUBSIDENCE
ALOFT SHOULD REMAIN STRONG ENOUGH TO PREVENT ANYTHING BUT
ISOLATED CONVECTION. HAVE BROUGHT TEMPERATURES DOWN A FEW DEGREES
BY EARLY NEXT WEEK AS THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE SHIFTS WESTWARD INTO
THE FOUR CORNERS REGION. 38

Night Moves
I have not run at night since last November. It started off well, but again as usual this summer, it becomes a chore. Started at a 7:54 pace and ended at a 7:30 pace. I ran a 38:00 for 5 miles. I am tired, it is hot and I am done. I have 15 miles for the week. I have to get up and run 5 miles tomorrow morning.
Re: Clawing My Way Back
I know runs have been a mental chore, but physically you are turning in some good ones. Do you think a mental break of a week or so might be good? Chill out in the A/C and forget about the weather for a little while? Hang in there Michael...

Thought About It
John Kilpatrick wrote:I know runs have been a mental chore, but physically you are turning in some good ones. Do you think a mental break of a week or so might be good? Chill out in the A/C and forget about the weather for a little while? Hang in there Michael...
I have thought about it, but the problem is that running is my decompressor. It is my destresser. With my job ( running a library is not easy), writing my dissertation, raising a toddler and teaching, I need something to calm me down. So, it will drive me nuts not to run.
Running Sucks
It really sucks. I hate it. The heat, humidity, my injuries, my mind is numb and I am tired. I just cannot quit you running. You allow me to stay somewhat healthy. You allow me to stay somewhat trim. I just cannot quit you. I ran 6 miles at 46:55 and I am tired. Most of it was at a 7:48 pace. I just got on and did it. I am tired. I have 21 miles this week.

AAAAND repeat this until we break back into the low 70s for the lows which at this rate will be December.

Hints
Therea are hints, and I mean hints, that the High Pressure Ridge will be moving westward August 26-27. Now, GFS is onto this trend. Who knows. I will run 7 miles today at the YMCA. I want to get off at 3 pm to knock it out, but it might be later at 4 pm.
Done
I am done. I am baked. At least for today, I am done. When I decided not to run today, I felt a huge burden off my shoulders. I might not run tomorrow, leaving everything to start up Monday. This is the worst I have ever felt, as far as being burnt out. I think the season change will stop this. Sign me done for today.
Recipe For Success
Back to the beginning. Back to the basics for me. I am going to start at a 7:54 pace and stay there. If I feel better, go faster, if not, stay there. I am going to do 7 miles and finish. Will give a synopsis after my run at 3 pm. I have 8 songs qued up at 8 minutes a piece. Also, we are going to the Texans and Saints game tonight. The heat will be unbearable in the parking lot to the stadium. Sigh.
Gut Run
Yes it was, but at least I got it done. Did I feel good? No. It was acceptable though. I ran a 54:00 for 7 miles and most of it at a 7:48 pace. It was 81 degrees in the house ( upstais), so it was what it was. I want to try and run a quick 5 miler this afternoon, but may not get to. This heat wave continues, but I have to get into the mindset to finish what I start. I know that the real running starts Monday at 4 pm. Otherwise, have a good day to all.
Re: Clawing My Way Back
Really hope the heat breaks for you all soon even though I know it's out of your control. I know how exhausting it can be when you deal with it day after day. And we only dealt with it for about 5 or 6 weeks and that is unusual for here without any significant breaks. At least it sounds like when you get a run in, it's a decent one, although I'm sure you feel that it's not an optimal situation.

Well it is still looking like September 4-5. We are praying for that. We are at 100 degrees for all of August so far and it looks like it will stay that way. It is just demoralizing for those who deal with it. It is not just the heat. We get that in Texas. It is the fact that for three months, this high pressure ridge will not move. Yeah, I am just going to have to force it each day.
