Now that 23 miles beat me up! Empty Now that 23 miles beat me up!

I did a 23-mile training run today at the Muscatatuck Wildlife Refuge.
As I have mentioned before, it is a beautiful place and soon the colors should be gorgeous.
I always pass deer, see turkeys and a lot more.

I did 8 miles out there on Wednesday and noticed that gravel had been laid on the road to my starting place.
I was not happy because I thought it would be a big issue, but it really was not bad - that day - one loop.

I get there today at 7:30 (upper 40s!) and by now about half of the 8-mile loop has fresh gravel.
The first loop went well, but as time wore on I really noticed how much faster I was on the road sections with little or no gravel. With the same effort on the newly graveled sections, my minutes per mile definitely slowed down. I realize I was getting more fatigued, but it made a real difference. By the end my hips were really getting sore fighting the gravel.

So . . . it was not marathon length, but I am confident that I will not be more tired after running the flat streets of Indy. Those rollers out there really work you, but in a great way. With the Tecumseh Marathon a month after Indy, that loop and others soon to come in the woods will be helpful in preparing for the trail marathon.

No cramping (doing better with salt intake), no chafing (back to compression shorts) - yeah, happy feet with my Trailblades and nice temps to boot. I now wear the outdoor series injinji toesocks and they feel great. I emailed them and asked what would be good for the trail marathon in December. These are great for any weather and I honestly don't feel them once they are on - though I thought I would. 7 weeks until Indy and feeling much more confident.

A year ago I was walking 4 miles day, period. I never would have dreamed I could do this at almost 60. Good times! Running

That is awesome!

I run a lot of gravel and totally believe it is work and I am faster on pavement. But I feel like it is softer so I don't notice pain/soreness due to gravel....

It most definitely is softer, I agree.
My body is just getting used to all of the minute shifting, hence sore hips.
My hips never get sore on the road because the majority of running I have done, until recently, has been on blacktop. This morning I am feeing very little soreness and after some foam rolling, I am sure it will be fine today.

Charles, you are going to be so ready for Indy! Fear not...you're gonna do great!

I would bet by spring next year, that loop will have nice compacted gravel, a lot less rolling and will be a nice change for training, especially for trails.

Nice progress, Charles! Charles, thats my son's name, now if he would just act more towards 60 maturity wise than 16 that would be great Idea

23 mile unsupported training runs are quite analogous to the actual race. Nice work.
