Not so fast my friend! Sad

Thanks Alex, apparently Chris and I gutting out our last mile repeat motivated our coach to not wuss out and get in #6 when he did the workout. As he said, it goes both ways!

Well, after the 14 on Tuesday, I really didn't feel too bad yesterday. I was a bit creaky when I started but felt good enough to make it a 7 mile run instead of the planned 6. That was me getting greedy and planning to hit 80 if the week continued to go well.

My legs were still a bit fatigued today, but I've had them feel worse and still been able to knock out a solid tempo run. However, when I got on the mill this afternoon (yes, I bailed early from work to run, but I'll deal with that this weekend!) my HR spiked way higher than it should have in my 1st warm up mile. I'm normally in the upper 130s maybe low 140s by the end of my warmup and a mile in I was already over 150 with no sign of it dropping off. Immediately decided to audible and turn today into a double with 2 easy runs. I went 7 this afternoon at around 8:28 pace and am headed down to the mill in the basement to get in another super easy 4 here shortly.

Tomorrow is a scheduled double leading into the Saturday long run, so the plan is another easy 4 in the morning and 7 after work. I talked a buddy into doing the 22 with me on Saturday and having somebody to run with usually makes those a bit easier on me. And with 22 planned, I need all the help I can get!

Good luck with your Saturday 22...It should be a tough one with the week that you are putting in. But what pains you can only make you stronger. No pain, no gain. And all of those other motivational sayings.

Hope your 22 goes well. Sounds like you're still holding up well despite the tough training. I agree that running with someone definitely makes things less stressful and makes the time go by faster.

Overall you're mentioning tired legs a lot and that is a good thing. You'll remember that during the last 10K of your marathon and think to yourself something along the lines of "this is what I've been doing in training all along" and you'll be able to push through it much more efficiently.

Love the audible call really good job listening to your body. Not sure if others understand how difficult that can be as our mind can lead us down a troubled path.

You should be ready to go for what 22 nice! Enjoy it Ill be out there for 20 thinking of that extra 2 you will knock off.

I think accumulated fatigue from the last month or so got to me this week. Well, that and the mile repeats followed by the 14 mile run. After the 7 on Thursday afternoon, I bailed on running later that night and getting up Friday morning for a short run. Killing myself for a couple of easy recovery runs would be dumb if it jeopardized the "important" run of the week. So I ended up with 3 straight days of 7 mile relatively easy runs.

That decision set me up for a solid 22 miles this morning. I ran with a buddy and we were both glad we decided to do the run together because we kind of forced each other to hang in for the last 2-3 miles. It was starting to get warm and we were both pretty well cooked by mile 20, but we hung in there to get in the full 22. Ended averaging about 8:07 miles for the whole run and rewarded myself with this when I got done. It doesn't look spectacular, but it was delicious!

Nice job, Jim, on the 22. I think I'm feeling similar to you and it makes sense as we're both training for the same marathon so the tough part of the training programs are hitting us. The heat today was worse than I thought it would be . What was the meal, looks like potatoes and some sort of sausage?

Potatoes, green peppers, onion, spicy smoked sausage, eggs, and cheese.

It definitely got a little toasty by the end of my run even though I was done by 9:00.

Good job on the run this morning - I know I'm not in marathon mode right now, but it has been forever since I've ran 22 miles (I've done it before, but it just sounds intimidating still)- and I've never come close to 80 miles in a week. Looking good and thanks to you, I'm now hungry....

Thank you sir! And no way I would have eclipsed your number this week even if I had known about it ahead of time. My legs felt like concrete blocks this morning.

The 3rd time's a charm! - Page 14 Empty Re: The 3rd time's a charm!

Post  mul21 Mon Aug 29, 2011 3:17 pm

So, after the 22 on Saturday, I was sitting at 67 miles for the week. My legs were pretty tight from the long run, but I decided to go 6 in the morning for a few reasons, but man I felt like crap doing it. It got me to a number I'd be happy with for the week if I didn't go back out for more miles and it also gave me a chance, if I was feeling good, to hit 80 miles for the week if I got in 7 later in the day. I was actually feeling pretty decent by the time I decided to go out for run #2 on the day and the plan was a minimum of 5 miles to get to Dave's weekly goal of 78. I got to about 2 miles and was feeling relatively loose and made the call to just go ahead and do 7 to get to 80 (which Dave already noted). The morning run ended up averaging about 8:55 miles and the evening run was a bit quicker at 8:36.

I did in fact pay for the big week this morning. I absolutely did not want to get out of bed, but managed to get out the door and get in the 4 miles I needed to get done to get the week off to a good start. My legs absolutely felt like concrete blocks this morning and the pace reflected that. I think that was the slowest I've gone in a year or so at an average pace of 9:25 or so. I felt a lot better by the end, but definitely glad I decided to do a double recovery today instead of the scheduled tempo run. I'll do that tomorrow and another double Wednesday. 70 on the schedule this week and then a step back next week with a tune up half included.

So, last week was a new weekly high and if I get in my runs as scheduled through Wednesday, I'll end the month at a new monthly high (by 45 miles) of 302.
