Re: Laugh at the Rules
I would wear a singlet/sleeveless shirt with shorts and then wear a long sleeved throw-away shirt (or just leave it off) 50 isn't really cold and after a few miles you'll be warm. 70 and sunny will feel warm, especially after you've been running over 20 miles.

Yep, that would be my outfit strategy as well.Julie wrote:I would wear a singlet/sleeveless shirt with shorts and then wear a long sleeved throw-away shirt (or just leave it off) 50 isn't really cold and after a few miles you'll be warm. 70 and sunny will feel warm, especially after you've been running over 20 miles.

The outfit....what are the options?
Bright orange with black shorts. Bright blue with black shorts. Hot pink with pink or black shorts. Husker Tank with Husker red shorts.....Not sure yet!!!!
I plan on a throwaway shirt (I have this ugly-ass sweatshirt from my former school--it will be too warm to run even a mile in but will be great for standing around and then it is gone!), maybe some socks and hand warmers at the beginning (damn Raynauds). Jim will be around to ditch anything else or possibly change socks/bandana and give me an extra gel!
I know the weather looks warmer than some would prefer. I'm ok with it.
Re: Laugh at the Rules
Oh you will be OK in that weather, especially after training all summer. If you wear Husker attire I'm sure you'll have people cheering for you. One of my friends always wears red and something Husker related to marathons and gets cheered for it.
You'll be great! Have a safe trip up there and enjoy! It is so beautiful this time of year.

Either of the bright colors will make you easy to spot. Peggy did her triathlon in a mint colored top and she was very easy to spot in the crowd.

You have to wear the Husker gear since Minnesota is Big Ten territory. Good luck and enjoy! The Twin Cities remains my best marathon experience, have fun.

Re: Laugh at the Rules
Thanks everyone!
The hotel just off I35 we planned to stay at about 5.5 hours down the road was full, so we went another 50 miles--we were tired when we finally hit the bed at 12:30 or so. Planned to sleep in. Then Jim's iPad alarm went off at 5:30 and I've been awake ever since. Finally got up for coffee and computer. Now Jim is snoring...Grr! I hope tonight's sleep is decent or I will be worrying that I will have the experience that Julie had!
Maybe I can nap when we hit the road again.
I want to wear the Husker gear, but I also wanted to be brighter (white shirt). If they Husker's pull off the W I will definitely be wearing red shorts!
As far as a Badger bar Nick? I was hoping for a Husker bar! But I can only watch the first half anyway...then I need to settle in.
We have just a few hours of driving left and then it's Expo time! I hope they have a cute tee-shirt or sweatshirt. My fav tee is from San Antonio and I love my pink Twin Cities hooded zip sweatshirt I got in 2007!
I am psyched! I had a great time at school yesterday. We were supposed to talk to our kids about the value of college and our college experience. I then proceeded to tell them about commitment and working hard and showed them my training log from the last 18 weeks and the marathon course and stuff. This one kid, who has been the bane of my existence this year, had the cutest comment. I was explaining that I'm just an average person, average runner, didn't do athletics in high school, etc. and he looked up at my weekly mileage graph on the screen and said, " You call THAT average?" So cute!

Re: Laugh at the Rules
I'm in the hotel by myself. We met my sister for dinner at 4:30--finally left after conversation and stuff and got back to hotel just in time for the first TD! Then I started a bath and missed the Badger's answer TD....Jim went to a bar! I needed to get organized and I still don't know what I'm wearing. I took my bath.. REady to relax.

Re: Laugh at the Rules
Disappointing 5:15. I was at 2:20 at the half...off target for my goal but still possible to get a PR, but I had the stomach cramps kill my race again. It started when I took my second gel at mile 11. That one went away but they came back full force from mile 17 on. EVery step hurt to run. The cramps are up high in my abs, and also on the right side like a side stitch. I need to find out why this has happened to me twice now! More details later.
Thanks for asking Julie!

Re: Laugh at the Rules
Aww, I am sorry Peg. I looked up your time and knew it wasn't your goal although your training was so good Peg. I agree with trying to figure out what caused that and see what you're doing differently on your 20 milers when they go well vs the marathon. I need to learn a few things about fueling because since I quit using GU or Powerade I am really noticing the need for some sort of electrolyte replacement. Gummy bears + water are fine and well but really not sufficient.
Hey you finished and toughed it out and it's another marathon done! Congratulations!

Sorry about the cramps Peg. Stuff like that makes me crazy.
Congrats on pushing through until the end and avoiding the DNF.

Re: Laugh at the Rules
Glad you were able to finish despite the cramping Peg. Sounds like you got a side stitch which can be due to cramping in the diaphragm. I have had these before during a race a couple times and agree that they are really uncomfortable. Fortunately they went away quickly. I would simply try to slow down slightly and try to focus on relaxed breathing. Not sure if that would work for you but it's a thought anyway. Did you do anything differently in the race that you had not done on a long run that you can think of? Different foods, gu, electrolyte drink etc?
Congrats on finishing at least! Hope this is something that can be overcome in future races for you. In the meantime, you definitely trained well so you can continue to build on that.

Sorry to hear about your tough experience at TCM. I would still like to see a race report, as you know this is one of my favorite marathons. Hope you figure out your cramping issues, that sucks.

Re: Laugh at the Rules
Sorry about the cramping Peg. Hopefully you'll get that dialed in for next time. Congrats on finishing when many would probably bail.
