Okay, "corn" snow is created when snow/ice partly thaws and refreezes. That results in significantly larger ice crystals and sort of a chunky ball bearing sort of texture. It's the sort of snow conditions late-season skiers experience during the spring, which probably accounts for all the beer sold after 1 p.m. at many ski resorts come March.

We had a bit of freezing rain sweep through this morning but it seems the hardest hit area was my driveway and the street in front of it. It took several tries trying to get the car back in the garage after taking the lad to school. (Our driveway is the steepest on the block and the last to thaw out, natch.)

Ah, crunchy ice!  Is corn snow a Northwest term exclusively or in all of the northern states?

Down here, they use chat rock for the freeways and sometimes sand.  They also lay down anti-freeze liquid.  No salt is used.

So do the weather folks up there reference the different computer models e.g. GFS, ECMWF, or the Canadian model?  Forecast models for Sunday & Monday have some winter precip in Austin and the Hill Country, but not committal for Houston.  Still a ways out to worry about, but it's not going to affect the race.

Below (hopefully) is a 6-10 day outlook for next week:

Hey, I'm home!  Thanks for babysitting my blog while I was gone...interesting.

It's cold and wet here!  I'm going back down under.

New Zealand was awesome.  We hiked nearly everyday.  Long hikes, short hikes, glaciers, waterfalls, swinging bridges.  Penguins, dolphins... It was fantastic.  Also kayaked, went zorbing down the hill and BUNGY JUMPED!!

Australia was hot!  Hottest place in the world was only a few miles away one day.  We swam everyday...at least once and often twice.  The house was only a quarter mile from the beach...a swim before breakfast was the daily routine.  Also went snorkeling and boating...  Host family and friends are doing great.

So...I'm swamped with bookwork so will check out everyone's blog later today or tomorrow.

I'm scheduled for a nuclear stress test in Portland tomorrow provided the insurance company gives the go ahead.  Will check this afternoon before I drive over the mountain.

Our trip was very active but I only found time to run a couple times so I may have some work to do to get back up to speed...

Will get a few chores done and check back in soon...

I will take the time to give you a trip report in a couple days and even though I'm technically challenged I'll try and attach a couple photos.  Not sure I can adequately describe the trip in words or with photos but I'll give it a go once things settle down a bit.

I just checked and I did get preauthorization from the insurance company for my nuclear stress test tomorrow.  I'll slide over the mountain in the morning and will be glowing in the dark shortly after lunch...  I'll let you know how it goes.

More details on the trip coming I promise but today's post is an update on the stress test.

The prep for the test was no caffeine or chocolate 24 hours prior and nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior.  We got up early and did our core/strength workout and had an egg on toast for breakfast with OJ but no coffee.

The most stressful part was the drive over the mountain in the fog, ice and snow.  I left early and made it with time to spare.  Picked up my Mom who wanted to ride along and visit.  The last time I saw her was on Thanksgiving so we had lots of catching up to do.

Arrived at the hospital and checked in and was informed the full test would take 3-4 hours!  Oops hadn't planned on that so I sent Mom off to find herself some lunch.

As expected they were not able to get an IV started.  I'm a tough stick under the best of circumstances and with limited food and drink I'm nearly impossible.  They called in an expert who got it on the first try.  They injected the radioactive stuff and then it was off for photos.  They got a new machine on Thursday so Friday was still a training day...interesting.  I was informed that it was the newest machine in Oregon and I was getting the best scan available in the state.  The first photos were taken outside the "tube" and they were fine.  I just had to lay very still.  Then they slid me in the tube for the CT portion.  I did fine but was very uncomfortable.  It was smaller than any MRI or anything I'd ever seen.  Fortunately that portion was quick.

Next it was off for the stress test portion.  They explained everything and hooked me to all kinds of wires etc.  The test was on a treadmill and they used the Bruce protocol.  (I found some interesting stuff on the web when I got home)  So they hooked me all up took an EKG laying down, then standing and then off I went.  The treadmill started at 1.7mph and 10% grade.  They said I had to hang on and I wasn't allowed to swing my arms as the IV was still needed.  The speed and grade increased every 3 minutes.  The goal HR for me was 138 (based on age) but they didn't expect me to be able to get there as I'm still on a beta blocker.  I explained that I often exceeded that.  They were amazed when I made it past 10 minutes and was still breathing pretty normally.  My HR got to 130 and then started to drop...they said that was the beta blocker kicking in.  It's important that they inject the next dose of radioactive stuff at the peak HR and then I continue for another 60 seconds.  They were worried about missing the peak HR due to the beta blocker so when my HR went back up and got to 138 they decided to inject and end the test.  That was at 12 minutes and the treadmill went to the next level. 4.2mph @ 16%.  My HR went up to 148 during that last 60 seconds and they were quite pleased even though I could have continued without any trouble.  They had been taking EKG, BP, and HR readings throughout the testing process.  Once the 60 seconds were up they needed me to recover as quickly as possible so I had to lay back down.  They were amazed at how quickly my HR dropped back to the resting HR of 58.  They aren't really allowed to tell you much...the results have to be read and interpreted by higher ups but they did say that they had never tested a women who reached a superior rating and that I had reached 93% of my estimated max HR.  I wish they had let me go until I felt like I needed to stop but they were more concerned with getting good test results.

The scanning machine was in use so I was allowed to have a cup of coffee and crackers with peanut butter while I waited my turn.  I was starving!!  Then it was back in the tube for the second scan and I was done.

They will compare the scan at rest with the scan after stress to see if any parts of my heart are not getting good blood flow indicating that the artery has closed back up.  They expect to see a dead area where the heart was damaged during the initial heart attack but apparently they can also see areas that are alive but getting inadequate blood flow if that's occurring.  Dr. B is supposed to call me with the results as soon as he gets them and then we can discuss future goals.

The info on the web indicated that they often use the results of the Bruce protocol test to estimate your VO2max.  There are several formulas...  My total test time of 13.25 minutes indicated a VO2max of 42.7, 47.8 or 54.1 depending on the formula used.  I'll have to do some more research and see what if anything that means.  I've never been to concerned with the technical stuff but do find it interesting.

The test was actually kind of fun...except for the time in the tube!  Everyone was super friendly and super encouraging both about the testing and about my future.  It's amazing how many people are runners when the conversation goes that direction.  Can't wait to hear from the doctor...

Wow! You do realize that even the lowest of those VO2max numbers is pretty much off the charts for your age/gender?

And to have that result *after* a "cardiac event"? That's outstanding and a testament to all the hard work you've been doing. (And your genetics, so be sure to thank your mom.)

The whole test sounds interesting, if not particularly comfortable. I'm eager to hear the results.

So I got a call from the Doctor...actually his nurse...saying everything looks fine and I'm released to start training for my next event...gradually.  Didn't get much information which is a bit disappointing.  I had asked for an appointment to discuss the results in person which the scheduler didn't think was necessary.  His next available appointment was March 1st.  I hinted that I'd like to talk sooner but the nurse suggested that if I waited till then I'd have some training under my belt and it would give me more time to accumulate questions.  So I'm waiting.  I'm confident that if there had been any problems evident in the test results that they would be seeing me sooner rather than later. 

So...base building it is...

Mark...in response to your comment about the VO2max numbers.  They didn't mean anything to me but I did look at the charts and realized they were high for my age/gender.  My first reaction was...if they are accurate then I'm not performing at my potential...or anywhere near my potential.  On reflection I guess I'm pleased that the numbers suggest that I have the potential to improve my results...or at least maintain the times I'm currently running.  I don't have a lot of faith in numbers...my BMI of 24.5 indicates I'm on the border of being overweight! 

Goals...I was hoping for some clarity after a discussion with Dr. B.  I guess I'll have to wait for clarity.  I do know that the core/strength work I did while training for my BQ was effective.  Marty and I are back to doing that 3 mornings a week.  I'll continue to run 3 days a week and swim and bike at least twice a week.  One day of running will be speed work when I'm ready for that.  I'm considering trying to get up to the mountain for a couple hours of cross country skiing once a week but I'm struggling to fit that into my schedule.  I like to have a goal event to keep me motivated and I have a couple in mind but will wait till after I talk to Dr. B before I register for anything.  I do better with a written training plan so I'll work on a plan that builds up my base and has my body prepared once I do choose a goal event.

Core work completed this morning.  I need to spend most of the day catching up on office work for the farm but will try and fit in a short run at some point.

Good job.  It might be just as beneficial to obtain the report and dissect it prior to the appointment.  It seems apparent that you're very much on the right track with no tweaking or changes needed.

BMI is not a great indication though, Nancy as it does not take into account that muscle weighs more than fat - lol.  As for the VO2 max numbers, I'm not surprised - mine are similarly way higher than average for someone my age - I'd expect it from us and even though you may believe yourself to be "unfit", you are certainly not as comparison to the average population - even with your cardiac experience.

Blowing me off seems a bit harsh but I guess it's accurate.  I looked at it more like I had the medical communities attention when I needed it and I don't need it...or at least not as quickly...now.  Maybe your choice of words is accurate...and a good sign.

I tried to look at the report online but it won't load.  I don't know if it's because the file is to big or what.  I'm not sure I could understand it anyway.  I was hoping there would be a written explanation of the reading of the multiple pictures that I could understand but that wasn't the case.  I think I'm OK with base building for a few weeks.

I find the numbers very interesting but realize they do have limitations.  I've always realized that the BMI number doesn't mean a lot in my case as it doesn't allow for muscle vs fat.  The VO2 numbers caught me off guard as I've never looked at them before.  I guess I didn't have a lot of faith in them because they were only based on one very short test and the variation between results depending on the formula chosen was so great.

That said...I have more numbers.  I really enjoyed the Community Cardio Challenge that I participated in just before our trip.  I placed 3rd by the way. And donated my $120 winnings back to the pool.  So I've signed up for Moving Mountains.  It's a weight loss challenge and while I could afford to lose a few pounds, that's not really a goal right now.  I'm joining for the community involvement and hopefully to gain some more nutrition knowledge.  Both my sons and their wives decided to join as well.  My husband is even considering signing up...

So here's the numbers.
BMI 24.2 (high end of healthy weight)
Fat % 23.0 (low end of desirable range)
TBW 51.7% (Total Body Water)(Should be 45-60% for females. I weighed in after my swim workout)
And...drum roll please...Metabolic Age...42.

Regarding the report, I think that you can get 80% understanding by looking up terms and words.

Gotta love it when they lop a decade or so off your age.

As for the other numbers, I agree with you. They're good to know, but mostly just interesting. Keep a record of them, though, so you can track changes over time.

So...I've been on Gramma duty for the last 2 1/2 days.  It's hard work.  The boys are 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 and full of energy.  Fortunately they have daycare/preschool for a couple hours each morning so I was able to get a swim and a few minutes on the bike trainer in on Monday and do my core work on Tuesday.  I even found time to do payroll on Monday!

I'm still kind of winging it as far as training goes.  Sounds like we are going to swim on MWF with Wednesday being the day that we have a coach so it's the longer, harder day.  I've just been running or biking on the trainer when time allows.  I've been kind of tired and haven't felt great.  I'm wondering if I jumped back into things a bit to aggressively so I'm trying to slow things down a bit for a few days.
