Re: TAPER MADNESS!!!!
No problem at all. I think that this is the best idea in the world, heck I would go as far to say go for it and run completely barefoot What do have to lose?ounce wrote:So, I went to the running store today to get me a new pair of shoes for the marathon, since it's taper time and all. instead of a pair of shoes, I bought me a pair of Vibrams for the marathon. They felt great in the store and the running I did on the freshly swept sidewalk felt a little weird, but didn't hurt at all!
They don't look like they'll last very long, so I'm going to keep them in the box until the marathon. Is there any problem with that?

I'm a little suspect, MISTER Schuey, of your suggestion, since you badmouth your Saint of a wife so easily.Schuey wrote:No problem at all. But, I'm shocked to say, that your idea has some merit. IF I can get through TAPER MADNESS, there's no reason to expect I would experience RACE DAY DOOMSDAY!!!! by going barefoot.
I'll think about it.

Re: TAPER MADNESS!!!!
I unpacked the 30 degree bag and made it a 15 degree bag. It had 5 layers in it with a leopard skin-type full length tights that I got for cheap at Goodwill. (that's a great place for delicately used cross-training gear.
I don't want to look like the little boy from A Christmas Story, but what else should I put in the 15 degree bag. I was a Boy Scout as a young tike, so it's Be Prepared mantra.
Thanks so much.

Why won't forecasters go ahead and tell me what the weather is going to be on the 19th? They're only going out to the 15th! Wimps.

That's because there is a nasty cold front coming in that they don't want you to worry about. You know, the kind that brings in ice, wind, and snow...

Cold front
I've been told it's only if I explode. Sorry.
But I have an idea about my performance on the 19th. I think a 12 minute pace is too slow. I base that on the long-held belief that the long runs should be done at a pace of 60-90 seconds.
This is really freaking me out! Here's the thought. I've been doing my long runs at 12:30 or so because I was so stupid to believe that if I did long runs at closer to my MP of 12, then it wouldn't be so hard to hit 12.
Okay, here's the money paragraph. Ready? Ready? So, if I've been doing 12:30 long runs, then by apply reverse logic, I SHOULD be able to run the marathon at a pace of 10:59 (12:30 - 91 seconds)!!!!
To hell with all that slower than molasses 12 minute pace stuff, LET'S GO FOR THE GUSTO of a sub-11 pace!!!!
Well, well, well, what do you think???????

I say go for it!!! Then when you get to mile 18 and it feels like you can't go any farther, like your legs are in concrete, like you want to die...think about what your original plan was and how nice it would have been to stick to it.

Great! But are you saying the reverse logic is off or years of how to run long runs is off, because if it should be 2 minutes faster than long run pace, then I'm not completely sure I could do a 10:30 pace until mile 18, when my legs are concrete.
And the concrete reference sort of sounds like I'll be tired.

Is this the kind of concrete that's breathable? I've never heard of concrete for runners. I can't imagine using re-bar with it as that might impede my running the last 8 miles.
Just thinking out loud, you understand.

And yes...you would be tired by mile 18.
Is this the kind of concrete that's breathable? I've never heard of concrete for runners. I can't imagine using re-bar with it as that might impede my running the last 8 miles.
Just thinking out loud, you understand.
Concrete is more of a simile. Your actual legs will not be concrete, but will feel like concrete. They will feel heavy, like you are not able to move them.

Re: TAPER MADNESS!!!!
I say go for it and I will also go as far to say don't be surprised when you hit that time goal and pace for the race. Sure it will get tough towards the end but I think your ready for it. No better way to find out by throwing your hat in the ring and going for it. I have been there and done it before and the reward was awesome!Nick Morris wrote:ounce wrote:Nick Morris wrote:ounce wrote:Nick Morris wrote:ounce wrote:Aw, shucks.Schuey wrote:HaHa love it!! Did you want the policy in case I explode or because of the cold front?
I would say the reverse logic is off...

The upside is that I would be done, sooner. The downside is that I won't be getting my money's worth for finishing sooner.
Oh, what to do, what to DO?!?!?!? Where's Kenny when you need him?
And how much more length can we put on this quote?
