Just think Keanu Reeves in The Replacements! Or something just as cheesy!
Actually, there is no pre-race speech. Dave kind of goes into a cocoon the day before the race and we're indifferent corrals, so i won't see him that morning. I don't blame him, he's spent a lot of hours preparing for a sub 2:30 marathon and I don't expect him to be worrying about me when he's running the same race. And honestly, running a marathon is probably the least conducive thing for needing a pep talk that exists in the sporting world. The last thing you want to do is get all jacked up and waste that energy when you're about to run 26.2 miles or go out like ypour hair is on fire and blow your wad in the first 10K.

He has to go with the Kurt Russell speech in Miracle. You're not exactly an underdog but it gets you going.

Al Pacino's locker room speech from Any Given Sunday would be my vote.
Hey, I'm around Sunday AM pre-race. Jim, you want to meet up at Schuey's place and walk over to the race with us? Maybe not because you know your way around and everything but its easiest for me just to go from my hotel to Schueys and then he's taking over leading me from there until the FINISH LINE!!

Re: The 3rd time's a charm!
I've got a pretty straight shot from where I'm staying right near the Southport station on the Brown line to down near the start, so I'll probably just go that route. I'll have enough going on in my brain and it's probably best to avoid an unnecessary detour.
I'll see you in the corral start area though and definitely after the finish for some celebratory beers to celebrate all the team Dave-O (and everybody else's too!) PRs!
Also, Gene Hackman in Hoosiers. OK Shameless steal from Chris for my next post.......

Top 5 Movie Motivational speeches
No particular order for me on this, but:
Gene Hackman, Hoosiers
Kurt Russell, Miracle
Not really a speech, but in The Program, I just love it when the QB says "Put the women and children to bed and let's go lookin' for dinner"
Pacino, Any Given Sunday
Also not really a speech, but the montage in I forget which Rocky that ends with "Get up ya son of a bitch, cause Mickey loves ya"

Man, I just watched the Pacino speech on youtube and I wanted to run through a wall. Another one I failed to mention is William Wallace's speech on the battlefield in Braveheart. Just insane how jacked up those get me!

Re: The 3rd time's a charm!
Finally some taper madness - everyone seems so calm this week. I think your last marathon should provide a good feeling for Sunday since the weather then was less than ideal yet you still did great.mul21 wrote:AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My piriformis is tight, my left side lower abs down into my groin is irritated, 7:05 pace feels harder than it should, and the weather might suck! Did I miss anything? Oh, how I hate taper.

Re: The 3rd time's a charm!
Jim,
Even though we are competing on different teams, I still want to wish you the best of luck this weekend. I know that you have put in some good training this summer and will rock on Sunday. The only thing that I am scared of, is that you are going to kill my time!! Hopefully we'll get to meet up at Boston in 2013, if not earlier...

Good luck surviving these last few days of taper, Jim! You're going to have great race this weekend. All you need to do now is go out and execute the plan. You're ready to roll.

I just watched Pacino's speech again. It's friggin' great. So is Hackman in Hoosiers (as dated and quaint as it is), but for my money, I'll take Belushi in Animal House every time.
Good luck Jim this weekend Jim!

Thanks Nick, I hope Steamtown treats you well. And if I run a faster race than you do, let's hope it's because I had an absolutely amazing day where everything went perfect!

Thanks Mark! I think Dave and I have worked out a pretty good plan (okay, Dave told me what to do ) that should put me in a good position to either drop the hammer the last 10K or hang on for dear life!

Thanks Joel, that is in fact the plan!

Yeah, that Pacino speech is pretty amazing. The best speech in Hoosiers is actually before the regional game, where Hackman gets a whole lot more animated than he does in the speech before the championship game.

Re: The 3rd time's a charm!
So, about the pacing strategy. I think the plan is going to be to hang with the 3:10 pace group for the first 3-4 miles, which should be about 7:15 miles, and then pick it up a bit to 7:05 miles through mile 20. At that point, it's going to be gut check time to see what's left in the tank. The best case scenario is I've got gas in the tank and I can hammer home to a 3:05, middle ground, I hang on for dear life and get in somewhere under 3:08, worst case I fade a bit but still hang on and get in under 3:10. Anything outside of those 3 scenarios is an abject failure!
