You have to have a sense of humor - and my wife goes along with it . . .
I think I may make a short video showing the exercises I do twice daily at home
Most are not too bad or painful, BUT two of them are just killer - right now. Wow.
But if I wan to run, I have to do them. I only cry a little.

I would imagine that once you start walking/jogging/running that the fitness will return much quicker than you might hear from the doctors and nurses whose frame of mind is for someone who just wants to walk and stand.  I am so looking forward to reading about  your progress once you're given the go ahead.  If all is healing as planned, do you have a supposed date from the good doc.  Wasn't there a 2 month time frame thrown out there initially?

A Fresh Start to my Running Career Empty Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career

Post  charles.moman on Sun May 11, 2014 7:05 pm

My ortho doc said that in six weeks, now 5 weeks when I return, he thought I would be PK with some light jogging.
That would be around June 13 - so we will see.
This is a sports ortho group and their goal is to get athletes back to where they want to be - if at all possible.
He thinks I am good to go for the IT 100 next April.
I already have my cabin reserved at the park and registration begin in a couple of weeks.

I have a 24-hour event in July in the Chicago area - Christmas in July - that I plan on doing - not concerned about big miles.
Then Howl at the Moon in August (Danville, IL) - Northcoast 24-hour in September (Cleveland) - maybe the Taterbug 30 in November.
There is a new ultra in my county on December 6 - the Jackson 50k/50mile about 12 miles from at the Jackson Washington Forestry.
I have run and hiked there a lot - big hills - more elevation that the Tecumseh Trail Marathon - 30% more.
I would like to do that - the 50k would be best right now.

All of these would be training and conditioning for the IT 100 in April.
Ready - go!

Okay, thanks, Charles for making the rest of us feel totally inadequate. Wink

Seriously, as amazed and thankful as I am with your ability to whether this trial, I'm even more blown away by your mindset. Practically squished like a bug? No worries. Just rehab and get back to it!

The fact that you have such a specific goal is extremely helpful, I think. It's helping you get through the initial challenges, and it'll help you down the road, too.

Well . . . don't put me up on a pedestal. I try hard to have a positive attitude and I do - most of the time.
This is still hard work and quite painful at times - so I have short pity parties now and then.
You are right - having goals can make all the difference in the world.
My upcoming races are always in the back of my mind - so that helps a lot with daily motivation.

Today, I am going to Canaan Community Academy to do a speaking engagement.
Last year was the first year of this great charter school and I was their music teacher, one day a week.
I did not go back, but I do keep in touch.
I will do a short general assembly with the whole school - including a couple of songs.
Then I will see the older kids afterwards and do a little more in depth talk about consequences and my injuries.
They will be able to ask questions too.
I look forward to going back and I may do events like this in the future.

Great work. As a therapist (SLP) who works in rehab I can tell you highly motivated patients who do their homework/exercises/anything additional given them typically have great outcomes. Keep at it!

Yeah Carleen! Get ready for your 365 interview sister!

Today I spoke at the charter school I taught at last year near Madison, IN.
My accident is a teachable moment, if there ever was one.
Here I have 8:32 worth of excerpts from the talk.

Hey Charles...you deserve to be up on that pedestal.  Don't worry if you fall off occasionally...and don't be afraid to share with us when you do.  It's getting back up there that is important.

Great to see you setting running goals already!

I almost did the Hallucination 100 there last year.
A lot of my Indiana Trail Runner member friends have run there and really liked it.

I got a medical bill today with an interesting diagnosis term - "giddiness."
I really don't recall EVER feeling "giddy" after the wreck.
Maybe it was the drugs! Rolling Eyes

Post  charles.moman on Wed May 14, 2014 4:18 pm

A PT friend of mine saw my post about this and said . . .

80.4 is the code for "vertigo" that I used in practice for years. "Giddiness" is an ARCHAIC term for vertigo. It's amazing how, when something gets into the medical books, it stays there for years.

Actually, since the accident I am having a little trouble with the room spinning when I lay down for PT or just laying down and turn my head. Does not always happen, but it is impressive now and then. Absolutely never happens any other time - like driving. I am assuming maybe my inner ear had some trauma too?
I want it to go away!

If I am ever in a wreck like that I hope I am delirious enough to feel giddy!  Gotta love that detail there too on where the injury was.....

Ok, so I see that you are planning on coming back to Cleveland, so I marked it on my calendar.  Again, if you wish to stay here (and you saw how close I am to the race course) you are more than welcome, just let me know what works best.  Not sure what my plans will be for that weekend, but I'm sure I'll be at the race some or volunteer depending.

Keep up the great work Charles and hang onto that awesome attitude.

A Fresh Start to my Running Career Empty Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career

Post  charles.moman on Thu May 15, 2014 5:52 pm

I mentioned my dizzy issue on FaceBook and a friend in Indy, who is an OT responded.

This sounds like Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. It is vertigo (sense of movement where there is no movement) with lying flat, rolling over, going from lying to sitting, bending down, rising up. People sleep in recliners because if they lie flat it sets the vertigo off. It is caused by particles in the inner ear canals that are jarred loose by trauma, in this case. Charles, you need to tell your PT about this. It can be easily and quickly treated with a simple maneuver. Not all PTs or OTs know how to treat it, though; you have to have specialized training in vestibular rehabilitation.
 http://vestibular.org/.../benign-paroxysmal-positional…

So I called my doctor - they squeezed me in this morning and I got a prescription.
I got connected with the OT in Columbus that my friend mentioned and I see her tomorrow at 12:30.
With the maneuvers she does, plus homework over the weekend and Monday - she thinks it is quite likely I can be symptom free before the Alaska flight on Tuesday. I hope it works or least makes it a lot better.
