Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
Here is 4+ minute little update three months out from my to-do in Bedford.
When I talk about my daily walks, I am now able to do 15-16 minute miles and getting faster.
When I first started back to walking, I could barely do a 30-minute mile - so it is improving quickly.
Running is still out of the question - but I do short 30-second jogs now and then - but it is not easy.

Here is a link to a gallery of photos of Becky's Alaska Denali wedding.
She chose this group to show at a reception recently held for them.

Here is the 7-minute wedding video.
Yes, it lasted 7 minutes - it was cold!

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
A very short video after doing 6 miles (walking)! I WAS sore afterwards, but I am OK now.
I need to keep pushing it - carefully - NO running yet! Boo!

4.6 miles at an average pace of 15:05 per mile. For me right now, I was booking it. I did nearly all of it on the south short loop at Riverview Cemetery. It is not flat, so I had to keep it moving. Weekly total - 25.3 miles
Running is still impossible. RFP!

Good looking group of people at that wedding. Glad to see that the improvement is continuing.
Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
Nice weekly total! What is RFP? I know it isn't request for proposal.

Wow, Charles - I continue to be inspired and I hope to see you in September!
Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
RFP - Relentless Forward Progress - a common term at ultras and the title of an excellent book by Bryon Powell of irunfar.com.
I use the training schedules in this book for ultras. And it has great advice for all things ultra.
Last week I walked a little over 30 miles with an average of 17 or so minute miles.
I had one 5-mile day in the 15+ minute range, but it really pushed me.
Right now. for convenience sake, I just walk a 1/3 mile down the street - across the highway - to beautiful Riverview Cemetery.
There I have my routes I use each day - it is mainly flat with two short loops that do go up and down some - not a lot.
Sometimes I will do a loop backwards as part of my PT.
I plan on another 30-mile week and then bump it up to 35 miles next week.
Then I will go to 40 miles and stay there for a while.
At that point I will add a "long walk" of the week - maybe 10-12 miles.
That way my body will get reminded of similar ultra training I normally would be doing.
Working on insurance issues - deductibles - paperwork stuff takes time too.
I have a great lawyer who is taking the pressure off of me and she helps calm me down when I get upsetting mail.
I am guessing it will be a year after the wreck before this all gets settled - when depends on when I get back to "normal" or as close as I can get to it.
I am impatient. but thankful. I looked up pelvic fractures - in particular the sacrum and I am SO glad I did not get the really bad versions of sacrum fractures. SLowly building up my stamina and rebuilding my leg, abs and back muscles. This is real work and just about all I do. My one-man Indiana school program will likely be delayed for a year. But I can make that work.

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
Back to my first race since last October - Howl at the Moon 8-hour ultra.
Susie makes fun of me when I am in "staging" mode for a race.
Most of this is all packed in the car and ready to go.
I hope the rain is over by the time I get there.
It looks like it will be a high of 80 on Saturday and probably no rain.
I will get in a half marathon and then watch the runners go past my spot on runners row the rest of the time.
I will do a little jogging now and then, but it is not comfortable yet.

Back to the races! I bet your ultra friends will be very happy to see you. You may end up too busy taking photos to even get in 13.1! But it's all worth it.

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
+1.
Question for you. Do you note any kind of feeling or pain or discomfort in your pelvis if you move differently than normal? For example, your pelvis and surrounding muscles are probably adapted to your walking. But if you reach for something or bend a certain way that's different, can you tell if it's the muscles barking or the bones barking? Not sure if that's clear or not.

Came home - took a shower and went to bed.
This afternoon I will get the little interview with Carleen posted.

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
The pelvic muscles just are not back to their normal length.
They are a little better when walking, but when I try to jog there is just no way to continue.
I am sure there is scar tissue down there that is messing me up.
When I do PT exercises on the floor, it still is hard to get up.
Right now it just feels like I will never run again or not for a very very long time.

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
My running app says I walked 13.42 miles in 3:44 with a 16:42 pace.
I feel like it was way harder than it should have been.
I have just hit a plateau right now and it is beyond frustrating.
I will continue to work harder than ever now, but I am getting weary of it.
I will just stop trying to run for now. No use in trying and it makes me a little angry.
I am done talking about the wreck with people - old news and I am tired of it.

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
First: Congratulations! Your recovery from what easily could have killed you remains inspiring.
Second: For goodness' sake, be patient! You'll get there eventually, and it'll be all the sweeter when you do.

Re: A Fresh Start to my Running Career
Shorten your goal. Maybe set 15 min/mile as a goal for the next few months. Maybe let your body make the muscles. I'm told it takes 6 weeks to build new muscle cells. And you have a lot of muscles to rebuild. Work with your body?

That's incredibly respectable, Charles. Take it easy on yourself.
