Re: Beautiful running!
It's too bad that the large majority of people will never truly appreciate what's happening in that video.

That is too bad. So fast, so fluid - they make running 61 second quarters look easy. It is art! I will never understand, with the millions and millions of people that run in the United States why it isn't a prime time, universally popular sport to watch. How the hell can NASCAR generate TV ratings and a race like this not . . . If my memory serves me correctly, NBC did not show this race live or in prime time. The men's marathon had been run as well as the 10K and 1,500M. This was the last "distance" race and I think they showed it in the 11:00 p.m. time slot after the Drossage (horses walking sideways) or something equally ridiculous.
I don't remember at the time (2008) Lagat running and being in contention at any point in the race. After KB puts the hammer down Lagat certainly was no longer in contention!
Re: Beautiful running!
Absolutely breathtaking (to me anyway as I love track races and that one is awesome!).
Re: Beautiful running!
Insane to go 4:02 from 1.85 to 2.85 and then drop a 53.xx 400 to finish. Just unbelievable and an exceptionally smart race to take Lagat out of contention early on.

Re: Beautiful running!
Thanks for posting that and holy crap that was cool. I think a lot of people don't appreciate it because they don't understand it. I don't know diddly about track and am just now learning to appreciate it. I think people respond to what they can relate to - let's face it, a lot of people have no idea why we do what we do... And I agree, that was beautiful to watch.

Seriously. A 53.6! That's simply insane, and how fluid he looks is beyond impressive.
Re: Beautiful running!
Bekele and El Guerouj are two of the most fluid runners I've seen over the past 20 years.

The thing is, that it looked like he had more to give at the end, but since he had such a huge lead, he kind of eased up at the end. Just impressive and amazing!!

Re: Beautiful running!
He actually ran a faster last lap in the 10K six days before that, running a 27:01, with finish splits of 53.4, 1:54.4, 2:59.2, and 4:02.6, according to TFN. Throw in the 13:40 he jogged 3 days before the 5K final, and you can say he had a pretty good week of running.
Re: Beautiful running!
Am I calculating that stride rate correctly for that last lap? It looked pretty close to 240/minute or maybe even more!!
Almost too fast to count.
