That's what the treadmills can do now? Wow!

My work picked up the tab for a Crunch Fitness membership so I thought I'd check it out. Well I was pretty surprised to see treadmills that can do this kind of elevation change. They are smooth too and have controls on the handlebar that can be adjusted really quickly and with minimal effort. I felt like it gave my legs a break from the pounding too. I just might be a once or twice a week treadmill runner now.

There are several out there you can get for home use that have a -6% to +15%grade. And they come in at the low, low price of less than $2K even!

My treadmill was right under $2K and it goes from -3 to 15%.

Ditto although I've never actually moved forward on it at anything higher than 6% grade. But I have used the -3% grade which is pretty cool. 30% grade? That's hard to even picture.
At "just" 10% grade, 10:00 minute pace (6mph) is the equivalent of 7:07 pace. This conversion chart doesn't go higher than that!

I lasted 20 min at 7.8mph and 6% grade tonight (6:30 eq on the conversion chart). It felt a lot harder than 6:30. Then I hiked at 3mph at a 20% grade for 1 mile. Then ran 1 mile at 6:30 on flat ground. The 6:30 on flat ground was by far the easiest mile.

This hill work is going to be tough it would appear.

A workout I've done a bunch is 0.5 mile repeats at 5% at 6:44 pace
The chart says that's 5:58 pace but I find that 5:50-6:00 pace run on flat WAY easier than the 5% at 6:44. Hills are SOOO tough. Good for you, I'm sure but UGH.

Yeah, that chart is interesting (and probably close to accurate), but I think the muscle fatigue from going uphill makes the repeats feel much harder than what the chart shows. I just did some 400s last week where I was going 7:03 pace at 5% (6:13 pace equivalent) and that felt much more difficult by the end than the 0% repeats at 6:15 pace. I can't imagine how I'm going to feel when I do the 800s.

30 degrees is insane for running. But I can see the value in that for walkers, they can get a much better workout with a huge incline in the same amount of time. My health club mills only go to 15% and that's more than enough for hill repeats, but I wish it went to 20 degrees for the hill sprints I do.

My hubby does a couple of workouts (walking) on the treadmill that take you to 15%. I tried to run there and it was close to impossible!

You are lucky, Michael. I always did my hill work outside in Atlanta, but here on the west side of Cleveland, there are very few hills so I have to drive to them. In fact, I ran 16 hilly miles this morning - outside!

Well whenever my new treadmill arrives. I can't wait to hope on it -6% to 20%, we believe they have been delaying the shipping of it to go along with this year's Boston. Which really sucks cause it would have really helped with training this winter with having the baby and working nights. At least or gym has the -3% to 30% Freemotion mills.

The kicker with our mill is that they raised the price since we order it. And since the shipping of it was delayed twice we got them to knock off even more money. We ended up only paying $2,600 for it. Supposedly it will be shipping next week so maybe I will get a month and half of training on the darn thing before Boston this year. Still will come in good handed to train for JFK and other events that have lots of hills!!

In the winter I sometimes walk at the 15% setting of the treadmill at work. There are actually some sections of Wasatch that are this steep.

I typically do 5% incline at 7:25 to 7:45 pace right 1 min and 2 min repeats totaling 10. I would say at 7::25 things get pretty dam hard.
