It just occurred to me...
The USATF's policy on a third place dead heat for the Olympic Trials is way too complicated. With the new rule competitors can try to resolve the issue by declining, racing, or coin toss. And there are lots of stipulations about each choice. Instead, they should just use the baseball rule.
The baseball rule is really simple. A tie goes to the runner.

That's very funny, and would be even better if the "tie goes to the runner" rule we all (except for Jerry) learned as kids were actually the rule. At least in MLB, I understand that it is not, at least officially.

Pretty funny Stan.
I hadn't seen this picture that close up before. It's pretty obvious that the tie in this race case should have gone to the runner Tarmoh--way more leg and torso over the line. I'd say that USATF and all the commentators need glasses, but whatever.... She made her choice.
I think it's cool that a good friend will be the USOC head team physician(chief medical officer) at the London Olympics, the first women ever chosen for that position.

Tarmoh backed out with a load of complaints.
Re: It just occurred to me...
In the official MLB rules, there is no tie. Either the ball beat the runner, or the runner beats the ball. It's up to the umpire to decide which got there first.
I wonder how many of us grew up playing ball repeating tie goes to the runner just because that's what we had always heard????

What tie? Looks to me like runner #1 is obviously ahead.

The winner is the runner whose torso crosses the line first. Other body parts don't matter. That's one of the things that makes it so hard. It's often tough to see when the torso crossed the line.
