They don't make you wear a jersey/shirt/tri-top in that one? Nice!
Really nice aero position on the bike, too.

I didn't want anything to hide my bulging muscles ! I know the ironman sanctioned events make you wear a top, but most of the sprints don't. I wore a compression shirt last year, but don't like to swim in a top if I don't have to (drags the water and slows me down a little). If I ever found a good tri suit that wasn't overpriced I would prefer to wear that, as I'm sure nobody wants to see my shirtless body!

Re: uphill climb
Thanks Nick. Good news is that the glute is feeling much better. The ball trick a)did hurt like hell and b)did seem to help quite a bit. I found a football against the wall to be the trick for me!
For today:
Had the opportunity to take a longer lunch today, so got to get in a 9.9 miler. Weather was wonderful - first time in a long time that the heat index wasn't pushing or over 100 for the lunchtime run. 89 degrees, 66 dew point, 46% RH. I'll take it! Started out sort of sluggish after a day off and I wanted to be careful with the glute. It felt tight, but not really sore - eased into the run and it felt better as I went. 9.91 miles, 1:16:18, 7:42 pace, 147 avg HR. Picked it up a little towards the end - felt fine.
PM workout - was great outside still - temp was about 91 and RH was only 38%!:
Cycled 50.4 miles in 2:20:54 - avg speed 21.5 mph.
Forgot my HR strap, but probably somewhere around a 138-142 HR effort - that probably compares to a running effort HR of about 148 or so...
Followed with a short running brick (hop off the bike and take off running). Cardio felt fine, but same leg that bothered me during the tri (left) started feeling twingy (weird feeling like it is ready to pop out of it's socket - I've had that feeling before...), so I cut the run short at 3.26 miles of the scheduled 4. No big deal - leg doesn't seem too bad and I've learned to be careful with this stuff...

Re: uphill climb
Thanks Alex and Kenny,
Work prevented noon run today and time was tight tonight (kindergarten meeting!), so I sneaked in a shorter run and rode on my bike trainer...
run: 4.48 miles, 32:33, avg pace 7:15. Leg still feels a little twingy - feels like if I went on a long run it might protest. For now I'm going to play it safe and if it feels like it is turning south, I'm going to stop the run wherever it is.... May be nothing (hopefully) - it really sucks when you are held back by some muscular-skeletal BS instead of cardio, but that's the way it goes I guess. It will be all right I'm sure.
Cycling: 60 minutes on the trainer, HR 132

Re: uphill climb
Nice couple of days of training even with the issues. Way to be smart about the potential injury. If it doesn't feel right, then something isn't right. Better safe than sorry...

Re: uphill climb
John after your nice little effort in your Tri do yourself a favor and take it easy and let your body heal and reap the benefits of what you accomplished.
I know it is hard to do but a little easy/recovery training for a week is not going to hurt your goal TRI, if anything it is going to make you stronger and only help your cause.
I use to always train hard and felt like I had to. I learned by accident one summer, I was on a fishing trip up in Canada and due to the black bear being so bad, I had to take off from running for 5 days. I thought for sure my PR hopes in Chicago that fall would be in jeopardy, well it turned out that the nice little break help refresh my body and mind and I went on to run a 6 min PR that fall.
So again do yourself and favor and take it easy and let your body reap the benefits buddy.

Re: uphill climb
yeah please be careful to not get a real injury. I'm sure the tri taxed your body and it would benefit from some extra rest while it's healing.
Hope kindergarten goes well! Back to school time already.

Re: uphill climb
I'm going to join in on this gang-up-on-John party. Twingy legs when running means - lots of slow, slow, slow miles. We're talking 8:30s-9:00s for you. 4-5 miles at a time (max!). Then get back on it and go go go.
Re: uphill climb
Wow, nice sprint tri, John! Congratulations on 4th OA and Masters win...you're rockin! Love the pictures. Doing at least one sprint tri is on my bucket list...yeah, that's the list in the closet Get that recovery time in...you're doing awesome.
Re: uphill climb
Thanks all - good advice and I'll slow it down even more on the runs...
Did a brick workout tonight - was in the field today and missed a noon run - ran slowly tonight and not very far... Leg feels a little tight but running slow was better for it... Actually the whole workout was fairly low intensity...
Swim: 1.2 miles, 37:09, pace = 1:45/100 yds
Bike: 13.4 miles, 38:21, pace = 21.0 mph
Run: 3.75 miles, 31:19, 8:21 pace

Re: uphill climb
Glad you had such a good race! That was really an outstanding performance. Hope you can get recovered quickly. Taking it easy for a time seems to be the consensus and I concur. In the meantime, congratulations!
Hope that kindergarten goes well, that is really a tough day for some parents. Kids too sometimes. Hope it all goes smoothly.

Your training is looking good John but I'm concerned about that leg. Are you talking about your knee feeling like it is going to pop out of its socket? That could be an IT band. Just a thought.

John I think you'll find yourself a little more recovered after the low intensity and you'll be able to dive right back into some great training.

Re: uphill climb
Kindergarten has been a bummer so far. We talk about it all morning, but then come drop-off time he starts to cry and tells me he wants to stay with me. I feel so bad for the little guy, but he has to go. I hope it gets better soon. I hate starting the day like that and then I worry about him all day....jon c wrote:Glad you had such a good race! I'm lucky in that my knees have never bothered me - it is actually deep in my left hip and it's my hip socket that feels poppy some times. I wonder if it all comes from a hamstring strain that I had about 8 months ago, but I don't know. I can sometimes feel the snapping hip thing, but it doesn't really hurt. I'm just going to go with the running slowly for a while and see where that takes me...
Thanks Alex, that is the plan anyway...Alex Kubacki wrote:John I think you'll find yourself a little more recovered after the low intensity and you'll be able to dive right back into some great training.

I hope the kindergarten drop-off becomes easier. I know that is a miserable way to start the day. My son went to preschool at the elementary and the drop-off was a struggle for many months.
