In a new city? Where do you run?
I have always thought it would be cool to have a Forum page linked to Google maps showing runners great places to run in a new city--something that's easier to use than MapMyRun. Is that doable in this forum?
I got lucky and stumbled on some amazing places in Adelaide Australia, Salt Lake City, and Denver, but a more exact approach would be awesome.
I also think it might bring in more runners/cyclists.

Hm. Since you've nixed mapmyrun (or mapmyride) as a search option, I've got nothin'. I use those.

When I travel for my job, I tend to ask the front desk clerks at the hotel if it is safe to run near the hotel, and where do people run. I also use mapmyrun, usatf and runnersworld for some routes. Normally though, none of them are close to where I am staying, so the hotel clerk is usually my best option.

First thing I always do is find a local running store and call them. 9 times out of 10 that's been a great source of info for me.

Treadmill, or I just drive around the area a little bit and then just go (Garmin helps). I had to do a long run last year in Palm Springs. Talk about a boring run.

When in a new city, I like to drive around and "get lost". I end up finding great places to run and really get to know the location better.

Yes ask you running store or the Y if they have a running group meet there. When I was first marathon training I called the running store for ideas for hill training and she gave me lots of routes and ideas.

Local running store if I know of it. Roadrunners club. Forum for local marathon. And you guys, of course.
We just went to NO and I did none of this, however. I got a map and then walked the area one day, went back and ran it the next.

I usually use Google Earth and look for some route to run. It's often on city streets but it seems to work well.

I've had really good success by getting touch with the local running club. The three times (3 different cities) that I've reached out to them, I've been directed to really good places to run.

Could it be possible to sticky a thread with our suggestions on where to run in our respective hometowns?

Re: In a new city? Where do you run?
I treat it the same way I would as if I were home; I just run (explore) right out the front door of the hotel. That is to say I never drive anywhere to run. I love the sense of adventure and discovery of running in a new place for the first time. I do inquire at the front desk for tips and take it from there.

That's what I was trying to suggest. But you said it much more clearly.
