How to ride a bike? Empty How to ride a bike?

Post  Jerry Fri Feb 03, 2012 11:21 am

Now if I want to give my feet a break in the 6 mile recovery days, how should I ride the bike? How long, what pace, effort or HR%?

Since I asked, how much riding shall I do for the equivalence of a 10 mile easy run?

An hour at moderate pace, wear your helmet and be careful.

I thought you were really asking how to ride a bike and I was going to suggest asking your daughter to teach you.

I don't think there is an equivalent for a 10 mile easy, but the closest is probably 25-30 miles easy on the bike, as far as I know but I'm no expert.

One mile of running is about the same as 3-4M of biking. The shorter the run it's probably closer to the 1:3 ratio and the longer you go it's closer to the 1:4 ratio.

I usually ride about the same amount on my mountain bike which turns out to be about twice the distance.

That is an excellent question that I don't know if there is a textbook "right" answer for. I agree with Julie that about an hour or about 16-20 miles easy effort would be about right for what you are wanting. I wouldn't get too caught up with heart rates - I know effort-wise, my HR is usually about 10 bpm lower cycling than a similar effort running. I do know it is much easier on me than running. Get some cycling shorts and body glide, be safe, and have fun!

Yes, please wear cycling shorts. And the helmet... (I am hoping everyone here wears a helmet. If you want to see my crash helmet photos, I'm happy to share).

If you're trading one for the other, I'd suggest going by time. And go by RPE, too. If you don't know how to discern your own RPE, stop using so many gadgets and relearn.

As an example, an "easy" run averaging 8:30s equates to around 16mph average on rolling hills for me. YMMV, especially since you're not bike-fit.

That doesn't pay out unless you die. You could live with a traumatic brain injury for years....

yeah, so just make sure you have a good emergency fund, all debts paid off and everything else and you won't need a ton of insurance.
