Philly marathon
Interesting...
From the CBS webpage:
(CBS News) PHILADELPHIA - Two runners have died while running the Philadelphia Marathon today.
Race
organizers confirmed one runner, a 21-year-old Asian male, collapsed at
the finish line. Another runner, a 40-year-old white male, collapsed a
quarter-mile from the finish line.
CBS Station KYW reports that
both runners were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital where they were
pronounced dead of apparent heart attacks.
Philadelphia Marathon
Race Weekend Executive Director Melanie Johnson said, "We are deeply
saddened and our thoughts are with their families and friends."
Their identities have not been released, pending notification of relatives.
Fire
officials said at least 10 others were rushed to the hospital by
ambulance, and the extent of their injuries and current status is
unknown.
At least 25,000 participants, along with 60,000 spectators turned out for the 18th annual race.

Re: Philly marathon
I'm just curious if we have another couple of deaths within the next 3-4 weeks, then will there be more conversation from the 'regular' media to try to create a story about the dangers of marathon running?
Then what corrective action would marathon organizers attempt to do as pacification?

Re: Philly marathon
The Asian male may have had Brugada syndrome which can cause fatal arrhythmias.
The 40 year old probably had heart disease. We'll see.
As someone on RW said, you run more risk of dying while driving the course than running the course.

Interesting and tragic. I agree that it adds fuel to the fire of the "I told you so's" out there who believe any kind of endurance sport is bad. Pretty silly.....

It definitely is silly. The majority of the deaths have been caused by underlying health conditions.

Re: Philly marathon
Back in 1978(?) I ran my first marathon -- Athens Greece. They made every runner, including a 17 y/o boy, have an EKG.
