2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
I understand the Boston Marathon is next month. So, why don't y'all start posting your bib numbers and corral assignments? Might as well do something to help with TAPER MAAAADNESS!!!!
I'll track the weather as well. After all, you can't start too early!!
And best of luck!

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
Here are the numbers for the tapers that I know for sure are running (and I have probably forgot someone):
Martin Schumacher (Schuey) Bib #5105 Wave 1/Corral 6
Michael Young (Mountaindog) Bib #1847 Wave 1/Corral 2
Steven Bothe (Gobbles) Bib #1492 Wave 1/Corral 2
Jerry Young Bib #4928 Wave 1/Corral 5
Steve Foster Bib #11557 Wave 2/Corral 4
John Kilpatrick Bib #10331 Wave 2/Corral 3
Kelli Kilpatrick Bib #21620 Wave 3/Corral 6
Michele Keane Bib #20673 Wave 3/Corral 5
Not sure of goals, but I know that Schuey wants to PR and he has been training like a madman. I'm sure that Michael (and I think one of his kids or maybe siblings is running too - they are a fast family), Jerry and Steven all want to go sub-3. John K just ran a crazy, insane trail race in GA known as the "Georgia Death Race" that is something like 80+ miles of fun, so I have no idea whether he is racing or maybe running with his wife, Kelli (who is much faster than her time, but she was injured last year). And then there is me - finishing is always the goal. No one needs to wait around.

I don't know about the rest of you but I can't imagine Michele just finishing...especially given the recent success she's been enjoying!
It's going to be interesting to watch the race and follow everyone this year. After being there last year I have a better understanding of what Boston is all about! And it's going to be an anniversary that I'll be excited to celebrate as well.
Taper well everyone...

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
Weather for next Monday is too far out to be even somewhat reasonable, but Saturday is thought to be in a 40's up to 50's for lows and highs, respectively. From an aviation standpoint, it's supposed to be VFR (visual flight rules) for Saturday, which is a good thing because there's nothing serious in the skies to occur.
I'll check out the jet stream models and see what's to happen. I've noticed that the jet stream forecast 7 days out is somewhat more reliable. I can say the weather for those not in Boston will be fantastic for watching the progress of the runners.

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
It is predicted to be in the low to mid 60s which is ok, I guess; however, given that we had snow this past weekend in Ohio and Michigan and are goign to have rain and maybe 50s this week, maybe not.
And Jerry is not running, but he does have a number.

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
But the biggest, most important question is.. which way is the wind blowing?

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
For Boston proper, it's supposed to be East at 10. A back door front is threatening to come in after Sunday's high of the 70. So, this would give a temp during the race from 48 in the morning to 60 degrees in the afternoon on Monday with partly cloudy skies and a 20% chance of rain.

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
I've just been reminded to check back in here. It's been a while. I lurk once in a while but I see almost all of you on FB anyways and Strava - so it's not like we're not in touch.
So - Boston taper is here and it's getting close to report card time. Shuey has been training great - could see a 10 min PR if he goes for it. Michele has been knocking out stellar training runs and has had some good prep races so don't let her fool ya.
My sister Heather is running this year and is gunning for a sub 3:17 (46 yrs old) PR - I've been helping on her training schedule so I know who get's blamed if it all goes wrong.
My A goal is 2:49:59.4 Not sure I can get there, especially with the forecast of Easterly winds and frankly 10 degrees too warm for a real god PR shot. I had a good CIM so improving on that is going to require all the acts of God to be in alignment. Training has gone well but a nagging hamstring has me concerned and could make everything come unglued, but as they say the hay is in the barn at this point so whatever happens, happens. Boston PR is 2:54:25 and PR is 3:52:37 so bettering either of those two times would be satisfying as well.
Thanks for tracking us Doug and Happy Birthday.

As merky as looking out 4 or 5 days is for weather, it is especially so when timing a cold front this far out. So far, Sunday has been consistent for the past 2 days at a high temp of 70.
WBZ-channel 4 in Boston shows Monday's high to be 70 and Tuesday to be 58, so there's the wide range of uncertainty on the timing. Knowing how TV stations hedge, I'll figure WBZ will crawfish to a lower temp by Friday. Monday morning starts around 40 in Boston, but I don't know how to tweak that for Hopkinton.
So prepare for heat, but not like the 80's 10 or so years ago.

ISSUED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAY ME
1005 AM EDT WED APR 13 2016
.SYNOPSIS...
HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS NORTH OF THE REGION...INFLUENCING OUR WEATHER
TODAY AND TOMORROW. THE HIGH CONTINUES THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH A
PRONOUNCED WARMING TREND SUNDAY AND POSSIBLY NEXT MONDAY. A
BACKDOOR COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH OUR AREA EARLY NEXT WEEK.
The following text is the crystal ball guess:
"Shortwave" is a mid-level trough or line of low pressure.
"Fropa" is FROntal PAssage
"GFS" and "ECMWF" are two of the popular weather models used by weather dudes.
"Fair" are the rules for choosing the Republican nominee, if one chooses to read them.
SUNDAY...
HIGH PRESSURE OVERHEAD WILL BRING FAIR SKIES AND LIGHT WINDS. FULL
SOLAR MIXING SHOULD REACH TO 900 MB AND POSSIBLY A LITTLE HIGHER.
TEMPS ALOFT SUPPORT MAX TEMPS IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOWER 70S.
MONDAY-TUESDAY...
SHORTWAVE ALOFT SWEEPS THROUGH. THIS PUSHES A COLD FRONT SOUTH
ACROSS THE REGION. GFS SHOWS FROPA TIMING AS MONDAY EVENING/EARLY
NIGHT WHILE ECMWF IS MONDAY AFTERNOON. RUN-TO-RUN CONSISTENCY ON
TIMING IS LOW...NOT A SURPRISE...BUT SCENARIO SUPPORTS A CHANCE OF
SHOWERS. TEMPS ALOFT AHEAD OF THE FRONT SUGGEST 70S...BEHIND THE
FRONT THE SUPPORT IS FOR 50S.

Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
So a bit warmer than we would all like on Monday - of course. It is what it is and my goal is to break 3:50 if I can given the warmer temps - anything under 4 is gravy!
Re: 2016 Boston Marathon tracking thread
It's shaping up that way, Miche1e. But as shown below in the final paragraph, the winds appear to be out of the west, in advance of the front.Michele \"1L" Keane wrote:So a bit warmer than we would all like on Monday - of course. HIGH PRESSURE MOVES NORTH TO SOUTH ACROSS NEW ENGLAND DURING THE
WEEKEND. COLD FRONT MOVES SOUTH FROM CANADA MOVES SOUTH ACROSS NEW
ENGLAND MONDAY...CROSSING OUR AREA MONDAY NIGHT. HIGH PRESSURE THEN
BUILDS DURING MIDWEEK.
SUNDAY... HIGH PRESSURE SHIFTS OVER THE REGION. DRY WEATHER WITH
LIGHT WINDS. STILL A NORTHEAST FLOW ALONG THE MASS EASTERN COAST
WHICH WILL BUFFER TEMPS FROM THEIR FULL POTENTIAL DURING THE DAY.
TEMPS ALOFT 6-7C WOULD SUPPORT MAX SFC TEMPS AROUND 70 OR THE LOWER
70S. BEST CHANCE FOR THIS WILL BE IN THE CT VALLEY/CENTRAL
HILLS/MERRIMACK VALLEY.
MONDAY... NORTHERN STREAM SHORTWAVE DRIVES A SURFACE COLD FRONT INTO
NEW ENGLAND. MODEL CONSENSUS ON TIMING WOULD BRING IT THROUGH DURING
MONDAY NIGHT. AHEAD OF THE FRONT THERE WILL BE SUFFICIENT PRESSURE
GRADIENT TO SUPPORT A WEST WIND AROUND 10-15 KNOTS. THIS AND A DRY
AIRMASS SUGGESTS ANOTHER FAIR DRY DAY...THEN A PERIOD OF CLOUDS
WITH THE FRONT MONDAY EVENING/NIGHT.
Weather Underground (wunderground.com) is showing a morning low of 41 degrees and winds out of the WSW with clear skies and humidity at 55% at the start of the race. I do not know how to adjust temps for Hopkinton. I would imagine it would be drier and a bit cooler, since it's away from the coast.

Below is the afternoon Forecast Discussion from the NWS. Appears that 70's, low humidity, and sunny will be Monday's conditions, but they do signal a low chance the cold front could arrive 12 hours earlier. Personally, I don't hold out much hope for it to arrive to affect the runners.

HIGH PRESSURE OVER QUEBEC AND LOW PRESSURE OFFSHORE WILL RESULT IN
DRY WEATHER WITH MILD DAYS AND COOL NIGHTS THRU SATURDAY. BRISK
NORTHEAST WINDS WILL IMPACT THE EASTERN MA COAST. THE HIGH WEAKENS
SUNDAY ALLOWING TEMPERATURES TO WARM TO AROUND 70 INLAND BUT ONLY
50S ALONG THE COAST. DRY WEATHER LIKELY CONTINUES INTO MONDAY AFTERNOON
WITH UNSEASONABLY MILD TEMPERATURES. A COLD FRONT WILL BRING COOLER

LEVELS BY NEXT THURSDAY.

WARMING MID LEVEL TEMPS WILL WORK INTO THE REGION FROM THE WEST AS
850T WARM TO AROUND +5C/+6C. GIVEN MODEL CROSS SECTIONS ARE QUITE
DRY...HIGH TEMPS MAY OVER ACHIEVE ACROSS THE INTERIOR. HIGHS MAY

IN THE UPPER 40S AND 50S WITH SOME LINGERING GUSTY WINDS FOR THE
CAPE/ISLANDS.
MONDAY...
APPEARS THAT MONDAY WILL LIKELY BE QUITE MILD WITH WESTERLY FLOW
AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT. GIVEN 850T APPROACHING +8C...A

Now, the forecast is very predictable for Monday and might approach 74 degrees with sunny skies, a W-WSW breeze, and dry air. Monday at sunrise looks to have temps between 47-53 degrees. The cold front arrives Monday night.

CHANCE OF MARINE INFLUENCE WOULD BE ALONG THE OUTER CAPE AND THE

MONDAY SHOWS THE HIGH CENTERED TO OUR SOUTH. THIS WOULD BRING WEST
OR SOUTHWEST WINDS ALL AREAS AND MINIMIZE THE MARINE INFLUENCE. BEST
CHANCE OF MARINE INFLUENCE WOULD BE ALONG THE OUTER CAPE AND THE
ISLANDS...POSSIBLY THE IMMEDIATE COAST ELSEWHERE. TEMPS AT 850 MB
FORECAST AT 6-8C...SUPPORTING SURFACE TEMPS 68-74.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAUNTON MA
730 AM EDT SUN APR 17 2016
REGARDING THE MARATHON...TEMPS WILL RISE QUICKLY TO THE LOW 70S
ALONG MUCH OF THE ROUTE TO WITHIN RT 128...AT THIS POINT SEA
BREEZES WILL LIKELY BEGIN THE COOL THE COURSE FROM W-E INTO THE

TEMPS COULD HAVE FALLING FROM THE UPPER 60S TO THE 50S. TIMING
THIS FRONT WILL BE THE KEY TO THE TEMPERATURE CHANGES THROUGH THE

I think Nancy should be the honorary Grand Marshal. Of course, she'll have to get up earlier and we didn't tell her ahead of time. Oh well.

I'll have to pass on this great honor...unless we can figure out how I can do it while helping plant carrots tomorrow. I knew tomorrow would be hectic so I celebrated my anniversary this weekend. Ran 7 miles @ 10:10 on Saturday...fastest run since last April. AND I biked 53.5 miles today. Life is good.
Thanks for thinking of me Doug...now get ready to track some runners!
