To All You Atlantans Empty To All You Atlantans

Post  mountandog on Mon Oct 03, 2011 7:31 am

My daughter just moved to Atlanta for her first job three weeks ago and is still adjusting to life as a taxpaying citizen. She is living with my sister somewhere in the Buckhead area so she's in the right spot for a youngster, with the right kind of rent - Very Happy

Anyway, for those of you that have followed, her BQ fell 32 seconds short of making the race next spring, but she is aiming to do Nashville or something in that timeframe to requalify for 2013, so she wants to get back on a training schedule again. She runs in the neighborhood of 40 -55 miles per week, however, she is being warned about running in Atl after dark, which as well all know is a necessity for the working folk in the winter. So she's nervous about running alone.

Any suggestions? Does the Atlanta Track Club have group runs? Do any of you train in the area that can offer suggestions?

Thanks much.

Here's a list of Atlanta running groups from the ATC web site:
http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/community/atlanta-weekly-running-groups

Atlanta is a very good running town as the ATC is the second-largest running club in the US after New York Road Runners. I'd tell her to join the ATC and not to miss running the Peachtree on July 4th.

I wouldn't recommend Nashville for a BQ attempt. It's not a particularly fast course.

I'll agree with Stan regarding Nashville - it is a pretty hilly course. Snickers in Albany, GA would be a good choice as it is pretty flat for a GA race. It is the first weekend in March - 3/7 (? I think) this year.

As for running groups, I would highly recommend the Chattahoochee Road Runners www.ccrclub.com. They have weekly long runs on Saturdays of all distances and the guy (Daniel "Dieter" Dietz) who organizes them is a personal friend and a long time Chicago Marathon pacer. When I'm not training runners with the ATC on Saturday mornings, I run with them. They also sponsor a good, fast 10K in early March.

Of course the best thing is to always run with someone but................if she is going out alone get her a hand held mace. I bought it from one of those huge hunting stores I can't think of the name now but it's very easy to carry it's has a hand grip and it would be better than nothing if she needs it. I have a problem with stray big hungry dogs on my route and the mace makes me feel better. Buy it for her and send it to her, kids sometimes dont listen.

great suggestions all. Thanks. keep them coming. I forwarded her the running group link and I think she's going to try and hook up with a couple of them.

No need for mace in Atlanta unless you are going to run in the dark along the trails on Columns Dr, Silver Comet alone, or Kennesaw alone. So many runners out in the early am and late pm especially in the Buckhead area. I do not live far from Buckhead, and my favorite loop in that area is to run through/around Brookhaven.

One thing she can also do is to visit the Big Peach Running Store on Peachtree in Brookhaven - just north of the Lenox Mall/Buckhead area - I'm sure they have weekly sponsored runs as they do from the store in Alpharetta and Marietta. I assume that she is working a full time job, or I'd invite her to run with us old folks at Riverside Park in Roswell on Friday mornings. But hck, we are as old as her Dad Rolling Eyes I do live fairly close, so Mountaindog, let's meet up in Grand Rapids and I'll pass on my contact info for her.

Cannot add much, but...

Nashville for a BQ = Bad Idea...
Snickers/Albany = Good Idea.

Joining the ATC is a good idea, the ATC Grand Prix Series is a great place to meet other runners, it also provides a lot of free races to members.
Chattahoochee Road Runners are a good club up that way.

Atlanta has some good running stores: West Stride, Big Peach, and Pheidippides

(+) 1 about Nashville. It also is quite barren in the last half of the race and can be quite warm. If she is already in decent shape, I'd have her run the Rocket City marathon the second Saturday in December--it's the best course and management around. She would still have a few months to train.(that's in Huntsville, Al.)

Mountaindog, I just got an email that West Stride is sponsoring a run on Saturday morning starting from their store at 7:30 am. West Stride is in Buckhead (technically) at the small strip mall on the norht corner of West Paces Ferry Rd at I75. She'll be able to get directions as it is the strip mall with the Houston's restaurant.

Nashville-I ran the half this past spring and while I loved it, I finished thinking 'wow I could not do another mile on that course'. Flying Pig in Cincinnati is a good spring marathon-it has some hills but nothing in comparison (just a bit further from ATL).

Can't speak for the other races, but the Snickers marathon in Albany, GA is definitely a flat and fast course (well, for some anyway tongue). I ran it last year and it is well organized, well supported, but smallish.
