Situp Fattens?
I always suspect the reason my belly is not as lean as before is because of, alright, partly the situp and crunch I do. Or maybe I don't do them right or not enough?
Help!
And this is a serious question.

Re: Situp Fattens?
No.
Stressing a muscle causes microscopic tears that heal 2-3 days later and - generally - make the muscle a little bigger in the process. Nothing to do with fat.
Lower ab workouts (lay flat, lift legs, lower slowly, repeat... among others) are supposed to flatten your stomach so even after a larger meal, you don't get that food baby look

Ok, fatten is the wrong word. I meant to say I have a bigger belly and am heavier than before. As a runner, shall I just quit doing it or maybe I haven't done enough?
Or as Kenny suggested, doing something different?

Re: Situp Fattens?
I used to do crunches on an incline board with 50 pounds and it definitely caused my abs to protrude more as I gained a lot of muscle mass there. With abs you want low resistance with a lot of reps to build endurance and tone, but not mass.

Re: Situp Fattens?
Jim's got it right regarding low weight/high reps. Yes, muscle mass will cause weight gain. And muscle mass does make your stomach muscles bigger. Personally, I do just enough core work to feel like I'm getting some benefit from it without growing crazy abs. So, 1-3x/week, depending on if I'm lazy. Oh, and sex helps, too.

My human phys teacher in High School always told us that if you run, swim and have sex in a day, you exercise every single muscle in the body. No idea if that's true or not, but it always got the attention of horny high schoolers.
Oh, and what Jim said about high reps, low resistence for core work.

I'm with whoever said sex. Not masturbation though. That's only good for the forearms. Just sayin'
Run in place, lifting legs to chest. Jumps bringing legs to chest is good too.
