According to an article in today's Boston Globe, there were 14,918 entries in the first week, with this breakdown:

BQ-20 4235 (1778 were BQ-30)
BQ-10 5724
BQ-5 4959

There were 8,596 applications in the second week. They will accept about 5,000 of those to make a field of about 21,000. With the invitational and charity bibs, the total field size will be about 27,000. The demographics of the entries seem to be consistent with previous years.

Look on boston.com or bostonglobe.com for the article, but I'm not sure how long it will be available, as the Globe is moving towards a pay-for-content model.

So now they will be verifying and notifying the fastest remaining applications, I believe that will be done by Wednesday. After that, several thousand applicants will be out of luck. I can only hope that the minute-long pee break I took in my qualifying race doesn't cost me... but it might.

venture to say hitting BQ time of 3:15 on the dot is going to be a challenge to actually get in the race for 2013. Hey maybe I qualify and call it a career! not! Can't I still sport the BAA colors. Just kidding!

Kenny, I would bet that if you ran that number then you would get in.

Agreed. There is every reason to expect that hitting the 2013 BQ time will equal race entry. People's times will get a little faster knowing they have to achieve the faster standard but there's no way the 5,000 or so that were in BQ minus 0:00 to 4:59 will all move down to the new standard. Instead, I think with 5 minutes coming off of all the times for 2013 entry, it is highly unlikely that BAA will even fill the race during initial registration in September 2012 and it will be more like the past with Fall marathons creating new entrants with BQ times and entry being rolling but not closing until late Fall 2012 or even early 2013.

Responses are coming out. See my daughter's response. Ouch! Missed by 32 seconds.

They should create a wait list and allow for bib transfer based on this. They could do that now.

Dear Chelsea:

Thank you for submitting your application for entry into the 2012 Boston Marathon. Regrettably, we are unable to accept your application due to field size limitations and the large number of applications we received from qualified runners.

Entries from applicants in your age group were accepted through and including the time 3:38:46.

For this first time and in preparation for next year's Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. implemented a new registration process which was not first come, first served, but rather allowed for a more systematic and orderly application procedure.

Qualifying performances achieved on or after Saturday, September 24, 2011 will be valid for 2013 registration. The 117th Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013. However, please note the qualifying standards for the 2013 Boston Marathon have been tightened by five minutes for each age group. To see the new standards, click here.

We appreciate your commitment to your own running, and we encourage you to continue your pursuit of running in a future Boston Marathon.

Ah, that's a bummer on Chelsea. So they took people down to a BQ minus 1:14? She was so close! It does get tougher for next year but now I'm more convinced than ever that everyone who runs a BQ time will be allowed to register for the 2013 race unlike the 2012 one.

I'm curious to know how they made the determination on the cutoff. Did the use total time under the BQ requirement or did they use percentage of time under?

And now the stupid wind in Champaign in April pisses me off more than I thought it was going to. Gah!

Another bummer is she tried to BQ at -5:00 over Labor Day and cramped up at mile 20 eaily on pace for BQ - 6:00. Wonder how she would have done had she only gone for BQ -2:00. The uncertainty of what she was going to need drove her to run faster than she needed and was capable of. I wonder how many other runners could have made it had they known the "real" number. Not saying its not fair, just another factor to consider.

Ouch - I missed it by 13 seconds. That's something like a tenth of a percent of my time. The BQ for my age group is 4:00, my time was 3:58:59 and the cutoff was 3:58:46.

I am disappointed but not surprised. It's a relief to know one way or the other, though. Now I need to come up with a Plan B.

Hey Jim time to "forgot about the wind and run like a freight train" and smash that BQ for 2013!!!

From the BAA website. Of course, this will be different for 2013 as the times will be 5 min faster.
Outline of performances accepted into the 2012 race

September 26, 2011 -- The Boston Athletic Association today notified applicants of their acceptance into the 2012 Boston Marathon. This year and for the first time, the B.A.A. implemented a new registration process for eligible qualifiers whereby the fastest runners in relation to their qualifying times were able to submit their entry on a rolling basis. Acceptance was based on performance rather than on a first come, first served basis. The 116th Boston Marathon is on Patriots’ Day: Monday, April 16, 2012.

  • 23,521 applications were received during the two weeks of registration.
  • 20,081 applicants have been accepted or are in the process of being accepted, pending verification of qualifying performance (14,780 from Week One; 5301 from Week Two).
  • 3,228 applicants were unable to be accepted due to the large number of eligible qualifiers who submitted an application for entry combined with field size limitations.
  • An additional 277 qualifiers who had run 10 or more consecutive Boston Marathons were also accepted.

Those who had a verified qualifying performance of one minute, 14 seconds or faster than the eligible standard for their age group have been accepted into the race.

“We are humbled by the desire of so many dedicated athletes to run here in Boston,” said Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director. “We will do all we can to be worthy of their interest and make every effort to make running here an experience that runners will continue to enjoy and value.”

As part of a personalized email from the B.A.A. to all of those who were unable to be accepted, the B.A.A. stated: “We appreciate your commitment to your own running, and we encourage you to continue your pursuit of running in a future Boston Marathon.”

Qualifying performances achieved on or after Saturday, September 24, 2011 will be valid for 2013 Boston Marathon registration. The 117th Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013. However, please note the qualifying standards for the 2013 Boston Marathon have been tightened by five minutes for each age group.
