Well, at least they are still accepting entries! Now I just need them to confirm I ran a 3:36 and I'm in.

Interesting note on the BAA registration web site. I don't know if this applies to all the registrations received so far, or if it just applies to the ones received starting Monday. It states that registration is NOT first come, first served. People will be accepted based on their qualifying times. So it appears that is people who beat their BQ time by a bit and register later this week, they could still bump out others who registered before (and haven't received confirmations of their acceptance yet):

http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/participant-information/register.aspx

During this period, any eligible qualifier may submit an application for entry. Please note that entry is not first come, first served.

At the conclusion of this period, those accepted for entry will be notified via email and their names will be posted to the "Entrants" page of this web site. Entry will be based on remaining space and an applicant's qualifying performance.

What it means is that it is not first come first serve for the open registration (Sept. 19-23). Come the end of this registration period Sept 23 when registration for Boston 2012 closes, they will compile all the information and times and that the fastest times will gain acceptance into Boston 2012 no matter if you signed up on Sept 19 or Sept 23 at 4:59 EDT.

People may be boycotting due to the price increase, which I doubt. I was thinking they stay open all this week even if it fills up and then take the fastest of those times base on this statement: "Registration will close from Saturday, September 17 at 10:00 p.m., ET and, (if space remains) will re-open on Monday, September 19 at 10:00 a.m. ET to all qualifiers until September 23 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Those who are the fastest among the pool of applicants in their age and gender will be accepted. Accepted athletes will be notified by September 28." So the only runners who are safe are the one's registered and confirmed in the first week while all others are on the bubble until the end of the second week. If it had filled up in the first week then some runners would have been on the bubble within their 2 day sign up bracket. So it may have filled already and they wait until Friday 5pm eastern time to tally the results. Idea

UPDATE: Or what Schuey already said since I just noticed his comment above Embarassed

I'm assuming that if it had filled up before 5:00 pm today, they would have closed registration. Based on the fact that registration stayed open until 5:00 this evening, I'm further assuming that it had not filled up, thus allowing anyone with a qualifying time to register. What this tells me is that next year, when the qualifying times are 5 minutes tougher for each AG, there should be more space available for all qualifiers after the first week of registration. If I'm correct, than this is an encouraging sign for someone like me that has set a goal of BQ minus 5 minutes for 2013. Perhaps I won't need every bit of that 5 minutes.

Seth, I don't think that's how it works. The plan was that they would have open registration all week and close at end of day Friday (which they did). Now they take the fastest of those entries and tell them they are in.

Thanks for clearing that up John. It'll be interesting to see the results, and than start doing the math to try to figure out what difference the faster qualifying times will make for next year's registration.

Post  Ken Mello Sat Sep 24, 2011 9:02 am

From an article this morning entitled "Boston Marathon Full"

BOSTON -- Registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon is closed, and organizers say the new system is a success.

More than 20,000 entrants have signed up through a rolling admission that was weighted according to their qualification times. The new system was created after the 2011 race filled up in eight hours and many would-be runners were left out. The previous record for the race filling up was more than two months.

The Boston Athletic Association changed the first-come, first-served system it had always used to allow those with the better times to register first. Nearly 15,000 runners have been notified that they're in, and more than 5,000 more will hear next week.

The 116th edition of the world's oldest annual 26.2-mile run is April 16.
