Re: Running with Varicose Veins
I once ran with Varicose. He was a fast dude. Very fast. And the stories he could tell...oh the stories. Like the one time when momma Vein caught him trying to swipe a couple of bucks out of her purse. Chased him around the kitchen for the better part of an hour with a frying pan in her hand. I think that's how he got so fast.
I could go on, but why.

Re: Running with Varicose Veins
I had very painful veins during pregnancy and had to wear compression stockings except at night when I slept or I would be in so much pain. I left them off for running, though. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Re: Running with Varicose Veins
I have been considering this issue also. My legs have been feeling fatigued lately, and I have been contemplating having my veins looked at by a vascular surgeon because they seem to have gotten worse in the last year. Previously, I developed pretty bad varicose veins during my last pregnancy that required I wear support hose even afterward. I had one surgically removed, which insurance paid for after an ultrasound determined that it was medically necessary. I often refer to this as "the best surgery I ever had" because the relieve was IMMEDIATE. Literally, I woke up from anesthesia and my legs actually felt lighter.
I did a little bit of research and I found that running can actually improve the circulation in varicose veins, which makes sense. Although, my experience tells me that if the veins are simply not doing their job, then nothing will improve circulation when there is nowhere for the blood to flow. I can actually see places on my legs where the blood pools and I don't think that running will fix that.
I don't believe that running causes varicose veins, which is the question that came up repeatedly in my research. I do believe that having them is making it less enjoyable to run and I am contemplating doing a Kenny and buying compression socks. Another thing I was looking for, because I have chronic problems with anemia, is whether varicose veins can be a contributing factor to that.

Re: Running with Varicose Veins
I sure believe running can help. Even as a kid I had poor circulation and I know my uncle did, too and he had to wear compression stockings as a little boy. I remember going shopping with my mom and then putting my legs up in the dressing room because they hurt so badly being on my feet that long.
My legs felt good as soon as my baby was born so I'm glad that basically went away but they sure can be painful.

Re: Running with Varicose Veins
I was thinking that compression socks or calf sleeves would help here.
Re: Running with Varicose Veins
If you don't have any symptoms, compression stockings or calf sleeves. If you are having symptoms, see a vein specialist...you don't want to develop thrombophlebitis or send a clot hurling to your lung (pulmoary embolism...a huge emergency!).
Re: Running with Varicose Veins
My understanding is that clots near the surface of legs aren't a risk for a pulminary embolism (PE), but a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is. This is information I received when I was being treated for bilateral pulminary emboli by a hematologist.Paula Sue wrote:If you don't have any symptoms, compression stockings or calf sleeves. Ask for a friend who is unsure if he should go on training or stop.

Re: Running with Varicose Veins
I have an older friend who competes in triathlons. He recently had varicose veins removed. He's already back swimming and biking, but says running will take more time.
