Hamstring stain...test it or rest it
Long story short...Boston training was going great until Tuesday when I had to cut my run short due to hamstring pain. PT diagnosis was "only a muscle strain". He gave me the go ahead to run cautiously this week and then move into my step back week next week and then I'd be back on track. Obviously we'll monitor my progress and adjust as needed.
The discomfort is in the lower part of the leg...above the knee...not in the butt area. It's slightly to the outside of the center of the leg. I feel it primarily just before footstrike.
I've been swimming, rolling, RICE.
So my question. I've refrained from running at all until today. I just got back from a very easy 3 mile run. I had/have some discomfort but not what I would call pain. This is marathon training after all! Is it OK to run easy with this slight discomfort or should I be resting until I can run completely pain free?

I always say that discomfort is okay, pain is bad. Of course, discomfort should be monitored so that it doesn't become pain. I'm also 28, so that's something to take into consideration, too. Hammies aren't something to mess with, so...

If it is slight discomfort, I'd run but continue with the ICE part of RICE after the run, along with any PT you were given. It is a bit normal for there to be some residual discomfort, just make sure you are doing easy runs until you are confident you have it under control. If it starts to get any worse, you might want to back off for a day or two.

l'm with Tom. A little discomfort is ok, but not a lot and no pain,

One question to ask yourself is whether that discomfort/pain gets better or worse while you're running. If it gets progressively worse, that's a sign that rest would be better.

Thanks for all the input.
I did feel like the discomfort increased ever so slightly during my run yesterday but I would not describe it as pain. It was also a bit more noticeable this morning. So I decided that a run today was not a good idea and opted for a brisk 2 mile walk instead. It felt tighter than yesterday at the start of my run but as I warmed up it felt much better. It started to tighten up a bit once I stopped but loosened back up as I moved around a bit more. If it feels OK tomorrow I'll try a very easy pace and see if I can go a bit longer. Baby steps.
Thanks again for the comments...much appreciated.
