Top 5 Beer List
We talk often of beer here - and how good it goes down post-run - so let's hear eveyone's list. If nothing else it will give me more beers to try. The guidelines: Name your top 5 beers, excluding the beer you'd drink if tailgating or hanging out for a full day. So the beers you'd choose if sitting down to just enjoy a few.
My list:
5. Goose Island - 312
4. Shoreline Brewery - Beltain
3. Bells - Oberon
2. Three Floyds - Alpha King
1. Dogfish Head - 90 minute IPA

Dave, I saw this at the store the other night and almost tried it. What would you compare it to? Is it a hoppy beer?

Re: Top 5 Beer List
5. Stone Imperial Russian Stout
4. Rochefort Trappistes 10
3. Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier
2. Stone Ruination IPA
1. Firestone Abacus Limited Release Barley Wine Ale!
There are really too many to list in a top 5 but I gave it a shot. I frequent places that stock a large selection of singles, both import and domestic. I pretty much always try whatever is new (like my current #1!). Since Stone brewery beers have only been in MO for a few months, and they're really, really good, 2 of them are in my top 5. Now, if I could only find a Pliny The Younger!!!

Despite the fact that I am (supposed to be) working, this thread has made me hit the fridge for the Smuttynose. I hope you people are happy.

Re: Top 5 Beer List
I really don't have a top 5 list. It really depends on so many factors. What time of year? What am I doing? Where am I? Am I driving? All of these play a role in determining what I'll order.
Being part Irish it is hard to say "no" to a pint of Guinness. Being part German, I will also enjoy a nice Weissbier. My favorite is Franziskaner. Although I will not turn down one from Paulaner, Erdinger, or Hacker-Pschorr. Nor would I turn down anything from Koeng Ludwig, Augustiner, or Hofbrau.
The best beer I ever had was at the Andechs Abbey in Bavaria. They have brewed beer at the Abbey since 1455.
So, with all the snooty snobbery done. If I'm at a brewpub I'll go with an ale, or stout, or whatever the house special is.
If I want to stick a lime in it, it is Corona. Hanging with the neighbors = Bud Light. If I have an extra buck in my pocket when Chas says to get some beer, it would be Landshark. Normally at dinner I'd order a Fat Tire.

Re: Top 5 Beer List
I can't say I've nailed down my favorites as specifically as you guys have, but I can definitely list my favorite styles, with one specific beer to end the list:
1) Dunkelweizen...I discovered dark wheats while traveling through Germany some years ago. I've never had any as good as I drank over there.
2) Hefeweizen...They've become ubiquitous, and I'm growing tired of Blue Moon, but I still love them...hold the citrus though.
3)Pale Ale...I've recently started really loving them...I love the hops...not as hoppy as IPA's
4)Oatmeal stout...I actually had a great Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout this past weekend.
5)Negro Modelo: Not what I'd call an outstanding beer, but it never disappoints, and considering how much I love Mexican food, I probably order more of these than any other beer while dining out.

+1
There's a Wiltse's microbrewery that I'd like to try, but I don't really have any other reason to go to Oscoda, MI.
Re: Top 5 Beer List
I am somewhat like Tim...hard for me to come up with a top five. I drink a variety of beer, probably not quite as exotic as some listed here as living in Central Illinois somewhat limits what is available. However, some of the local places are starting to carry more of a variety. I had a Breckenridge Vanilla Porter the other day that was pretty good, the Samuel Adams Summer Ale I have found to be pretty refreshing this summer, I like a couple of the Two Brothers brews, and my old standby drinking with the neighbors is a cold Miller High Life. I almost always have some Shiner Bock and Guinness in the fridge, and have been known to buy some Fat Tire or Abita Amber Ale to keep around for special occasions. When eating Mexican it is usually a Pacifico. When I was in Bloomington for Tecumseh last December I tried several of the Upland Brewery flavors but I think the Porter was the best. I guess I could go on and on, but will stop...

I love dunkelweizen. Franziskaner's is awesome. I was staying at a hotel in northern Germany with a bunch of Bavarian colleagues. We cleaned the bar out of them. I proudly even outdrank my boss.

I agree. Much better with mexican food than Corona.
