Pain on the top of my foot??? Empty Pain on the top of my foot???

Post  Tim C Fri Feb 22, 2013 1:20 pm

For several weeks now, I've a sharp pain on the very top of my foot, almost like I've tied my shoe too tight. Also affected is the muscle just to the outside of my shin bone. Neither hurts when I run. It's really bad when I'm driving, especially when my foot is just barely on the gas pedal. (I know, just go faster.....)
I'm sitting here at my desk and both places hurt. Lace my shoes up and start running, no issues. I am at the tail end of ramping up for the LA marathon next month, so I've been putting a lot of miles in. But I would think that if the increased mileage was causing it, I would feel it during / after a run, but I don't.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this as I'm kind of concerned something is really wrong.

I know you alluded that you didn't tie the lace too tight, but can you try loose a couple rounds(not sure how to describe) around the pain spot?

That's what worked for me. Then my symptom was not really the same. It hurt when I ran.

It sounds like it might be some tendonitis in your tibialis anterior muscle. Try R.I.C.E. and see if that helps. Sounds like taper is coming at a good time for you.

Well that's the muscle, Mark. Although the pain on the top of the foot is far worse than that in the muscle.
R.I.C.E., not so much right now. I have my last 20 miler tomorrow..... Then taper Very Happy

If the muscle is tight up in the shin, it'll put tension on where it attaches ... which is the top of the foot. So that would explain your symptoms. Good luck on that 20-miler!

20.1 miles in the bag. No issues. Got in the car to drive home and the pain came right back. Sheesh...

Is it the same car? You may need a new one.

This sounds very similar to a pain that I've had on a couple occasions now. The first time was, i think, from lacing my shoes too tight in the lunar racers and that time it just went away with a little attention to not lace my shoes too tightly.

i just recently had the same thing that developed over time from a heel/ankle pain to a foot pain. Mine would hurt when I was lifting my toes toward my head. The difference was that mine would also hurt at the end of a long run. It got to a point where I was concerned that it was a stress fracture. A visit to my local sports doc relieved the stress fracture concern and he prescribed and anti-inflammatory to clear out the inflammation in that area. All is well now but the moral to the story is that perhaps you should take alieve for a couple weeks while you're tapering.
