Philly Marathon - Stayin' Alive Empty Philly Marathon - Stayin' Alive

Post  Kenny B. Sun Nov 25, 2012 9:50 am

5th time running philly and I have PR'd each time. Last year PR of 3:23:15. Goal this year was 3:15 to BQ. My training runs all went well for the most part but my shorter distance races pointed to more of a 3:16 to 3:20 so 3:15 I did feel was a stretch.

Broke bread with Jim and John and company which is always nice.

I followed my pace band based on even effort (not pace). Goal was to run negative split for the second half.

1 - 13.1 - I hit my pace about exact 1:38:33 no issues at this point. I handled the bigger hill in the park quite well.

13 - 16 - At this point I was suppose to pick it up a bit and start running in 7:15 to 7:20 range but I just did not find that gear or confidence to hold it. Come mile 16 I realized 3:15 was not going to happen as I could not make up the time and to try would be risky so I said let me continue around high 7:20's to 7:30's and see what is in store for me.

At this point I think I also passed Jim and we ran for maybe 1/2 mile together and he looked real strong but then I moved on and did not look back.

17 - 18 - still holding on to 7:30's but felt like I was about to struggle.

19 - was a hard mile believe going over and up the bridge and this is where I started to fade quickly

splits the rest went like this and during this time I did quick calculation that I can PR if I stay below 8:00 and maybe even do 3:18 if I can maintain something around 7:45 to 7:50.

19 -7:44
20 - 7:55
21 - 7:53
22 & 23 - 7:52
24 - 8:00
25 -7:54 - Mile I saw my wife and kid that was great gave me a boot to maintain
26 - 7:57

As passed my 26 I realized I have to sprint to come in under 3:20 so my sprint was not the best but I passed quite a few people and was able to eek out a 3:19:52 keeping the streak alive.

Overall I was happy with about a 3:30 min PR and know I can get sun 3:15 next time.

I was pretty beat up after the run legs very sore over the 2 days after and ended up with a cold/congestion/stomach thing.

Seriously, great job on keeping the PR train on track! You will hit that BQ very soon, I think.

Congrats on the PR.

2 questions:

- how was the McMillan plan?
- how did the more aggressive taper go?
