Hi, I'm Laura
I'm new to this group. John Kilpatrick encouraged me to join. I currently live in Leesburg, GA, but I'm moving to Charleston SC in August. I'm married to a non-runner, but I'm working on him. I started running in college. Once I started teaching I ran more and more because it is such a great stress reliever. I ran my first race, a 10k, in 2010. I've done three half marathons since then. I'm having foot surgery in a few weeks to have a bunion removed that has really slowed me done in the last few months. The changes I've made in my stride as a result caused knee and hip problems when I was training for my last half. I'm hoping I'll be back to running by late summer early fall. Has anybody here had this surgery? Any advice?
Anyway, I'm excited to be here. All the posts I've read so far are really inspiring!

Hi Laura, never had the surgery either, but hopefully it won't sideline you for too long. Welcome to the madness of 365runners!

Welcome, Laura! I haven't had bunions either, but it's understandable how they could alter your stride. Hopefully the surgery will allow you feel like your old self again.

No surgery here either, but I have been married to a no-runner for almost 27 yrs - no issue - he just lets me do my thing so I usually pick a destination marathon or two a year so we both can go. Good luck with the bunion surgery. A tennis friend of mine had it right before Thanksgiving and she was plying tennis again by Christmas.

Hi Laura!!! Welcome to the team. Enjoy the wealth of knowledge and experience at the tip of your fingers. Like the others, I have not had surgery either.

No bunions here either but I know that it will be a huge relief to eliminate the problems that are keeping you from healthy running. I also know how difficult it is to take this time off. I hope this time flies by for you and that you get back to running soon.
Welcome!

Re: Hi, I'm Laura
Hi Laura, I didn't have bunion surgery, but I did have Hallux Rigidus surgery (stiffness in big toe) to remove a gigantic bone spur and clean up the joint. The procedures were called Cheilectomy and Akin osteomoty, which I think can also be done as part of a bunion surgery. I actually blogged about the experience here:

I had the surgery in early November and was pretty much back to regular training by the beginning of the year. I aint' gonna lie...it was painful post-op, but the recovery wasn't horrible.
Welcome to the boards!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the introduction! You will find plenty of great advice and some funny stuff going on over here! But, don't mistake this is a forum for runners by runners (and some triathletes as well)!
I wish you the best on the surgery and quick recovery!

There's no guarantee he'll bring it to you, but don't hesitate to ask. And ask again.
Welcome!
