Garmin FR210 vs. Timex Run Trainer Empty Garmin FR210 vs. Timex Run Trainer

Post  sobele Fri Jan 06, 2012 9:58 am

I'm in the market for a GPS watch and I'd like to stay in the $200 area. I've narrowed my choices down between the Garmin FR210 and the Timex Run Trainer. Can anyone offer any advice or recommendations between the two?

From what I've read and see, the Timex has more features but my biggest concern is that Timex hasn't been in the GPS market that long while when anyone thinks GPS, Garmin is the first name that comes up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I love my 610 (thanks, Sara Jane), and I think that the 210 is a toned down version. Prior to my first Garmin, I had a Nike STD and I like the Garmin much, much better, and they have only gotten better with time.

I don't know much about the 210 but I think I would go for the Garmin 405cx for 179.00.

My choice for less than $200 would be the FR305. I think Amazon has them for $189 or so. If you sweat alot and purchase the 305, I would get the protection plan from Amazon. It's paid for itself once, so far.

edit: Well, they're on Amazon now for $214.95. Last year, they were $139 at this time and through the Summer. Don't know why they're more expensive than the 405, which is newer (2007?).

With GPS, I wouldn't want any other brand, just because I don't know them. I don't want to be the first to eat crap or was that tomato? lol!

210, no question. The Timex watch is big and bulky. Read DC Rainmaker's full review if you want more details:

Thanks for all the informative responses. Being new to the world of running it is great to have a site like this where I can get valuable information and opinions. It looks like I'm going to be picking up a Garmin today.

If its not too late I would look in to the newer Timex 'Run' Trainer. I didn't realize they made two watches now. The old Global Trainer was too bulky. Perhaps this is what you meant originally, my bad.

Its only a bit bigger than the 210 yet has more data field options, which is key, and is fully waterproof.

But if you already picked up the 210 no worries as that is a great watch to start with for a couple of years.

I was referring to the Run Trainer (thanks for clarifying though). I did a ton of reading on both and decided to go with the FR210. Right now, I need a basic watch that's easy to use and that's exactly what the 210 does. Like you said, this watch will easily work for me over the next couple of years at least. If I need more functionality after that, I will be happy to buy something else. I took out the 210 yesterday and today and love it. I don't know how went this long without it!

Thanks
