It was just the half...and it was probably good for her to speed up labor. I could think of a lot worse things to do while in labor.

I don't think I'd do a half that late in pregnancy but I did walk-run a half at 30 weeks and little baby was just fine. She slept for most of the race.

I don't mean that that wasn't a lot of work for that lady but to me it's not incredibly shocking and I don't think it was unhealthy.

She ran the 1st half and walked the 2nd half, but she finished the marathon.

If you look at her spilts from each half, they aren't all that much different.

I would think at an easy HR effort, it would be fine. It is good to stay active and it probably did help speed up the delivery. I remember my sister-in-law being told to walk up and down the halls at the hospital to get things moving along faster.

I am all for running during pregnancy, but if she had ruptured her membranes while on the course, things could have gotten interesting, and quite disgusting, slippery for some of the other runners who might have received much more than they bargained on a nice Sunday morning.

Oops, there it is!! Oops, there it is! bounce

That is what confused me about her running a half bc she said her doctor was fine with her running a half. My doctor was fine with me running as much as I wanted just to listen to my body. It's about impossible to not listen to your body when you're pregnant (not you, obviously, but a woman). I'm not planning on running any marathons pregnant. One was enough for me and that was so early on anyway.

Seriously, what's the worst that could happen? She gives birth? She was 39 weeks already and that baby was plenty big.

I saw her run by when I watching at mile 12.5. She was running when I saw her, and at a pretty decent pace. A bunch of people around me all commented on it, some favorably, and some not so favorably.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If she felt up to it, then it was probably fine. That baby probably has an awesome heart, too.

I just read this article on ESPN, and this is what it says over there:

She completed it with a with a half-run, half-walk approach, drinking lots of fluids and eating a lot along the way.

So she did run half, she just walked the other half. I wonder if she took some liberties with the doctor's advice.

Anyway, I think saw this lady before the race. The back of her shirt said "Today is my due date and no I'm not running the whole race" From the back, you couldn't tell she was pregnant at all...all belly.

Check her 5k splits. Some of her 5k splits in the second half were faster than the first. Sorry, but this doesn't seem to bright to me.

But I'm a guy. What do I know.

In this day of liability, even if a physician said ok, I'm not sure they would totally "endorse' the idea.
Practically speaking, it is probably no different than walking for 6 1/2 hours at a brisk pace.

I
certainly don't see how race officials would endorse this since they
are hyper aware of medical issues and are quick to distance themselves
from "real" medical issues such as the poor firefighter who died
yesterday. In that instance, they are clear to say that they responded
quickly and appropriately, but that the gentleman died at the hospital 1
1/2 hours later. I don't disagree with what the race officials are
saying, but the tone is very different this year than in 2007. The
medical wording used was very calculated. I don't think there was
anything the Marathon could do any differently. There was plenty of
water. The autopsy may find an undiagnosed cardiac condition. That is
why I am a proponent of having a routine check up prior to embarking on a
strenuous exercise regimen.

I have a link to an article I wrote, but I will have to wait until my 7 day anniversary to post it.

I guess no harm, no foul, but I am very suspicious if Dr. Chiampas endorsed her run, as some media reports are claiming.

She was on GMA this morning. Said she had planned to drop at the half or maybe shortcut back to the finish area. She said she felt good so went ahead and finished. They said she ran it in 6 hours. That doesn't seem too hard of a run. She said this was her 7th (or maybe more, can't remember) marathon.

See, I think if a woman is listening to her body then it's not a problem. My doctor did OK me to run as much as I wanted during pregnancy and to return to running as soon as I wanted post partum (I took 12 days off) but I naturally slowed down quite a bit just because I had to. I had considered walk-running a full marathon later in pregnancy for our 2nd pregnancy but it really doesn't sound like that much fun and I probably wouldn't do it in my last few weeks either.
