Well, I guess at least this is something you're used to dealing with and you know how your body will respond. I'm sure you'll be back at it pretty quickly. I was going to mention that the end of that tempo run looked a little quicker than I would have thought you'd be going. That's got to be pretty close to 5K pace at just above 7:00 pace isn't it?

Thanks for posting the 9/11 10th anniversary pictures. Very moving and sobering. We truly must never forget.

Hope the calf situation is improving. Glad your cycle hasn't been full of incidents like this. Heal quickly and continue moving forward!

Catch it now and you will be fine. I know that i caught my achilles flare up in time as it doesn't hurt on my runs. Take care of things now, Seth - you still have plenty of time.

Seth - the calf thing sucks, but it sounds like (hopefully?) you were able to stop before any bad damage was done? I know you'll be careful with it - this sounds a lot more temporary than what you had to go through last time - I'm hoping that Jim is right and you will bounce back from this fairly quickly.

Phooey, Seth. I'm sorry to hear your calf seized up. I know that feeling well.
I hope you are able to work it out soon and keep up the momentum in this training cycle.

By the way...your pics are fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad that a few of you had a chance to glance at my
photos from the 9/11 ceremony at Ground Zero. Thanks for taking time!

Jim, actually, according to McMillan's calculator, that last mile of the tempo run you referred to was probably around 10k pace. I'm pretty happy with that because based on how I was feeling before this little setback, I really was feeling that I was doing a good job increasing my speed. Hopefully this niggle won't set me back too much.

As for the calf strain, I looks like I may have nipped this one in the bud. After a failed test
run on Wednesday (shut it down after 2 miles when the calf tightened
up), I made a couple of trips to my physical therapist, and today was
able to finish an easy 5 mile test run with no problems at all. Chris,
my PT, taped me with Kinesio tape, and I wore a compression sleeve over
the calf. I'm waiting to hear back from Coach Mike to see what he wants
me to do tomorrow. I'm sure it will be just another easy run, perhaps a
bit longer than today's run.
If, as I think, this niggle is finished with and I can resume my normal
schedule, than all I did was miss one long run and have a really
abridged step back week. No big deal I think.

Good to hear the calf is ok. Crazy how the end of the cycle is when we see a rash of injury scares and setbacks. Guess it makes perfect sense considering what we do!

Yes, the missed training should not matter, you have plenty of time, and it will help in healing too. Glad you picked up on it right away.

Thanks Jim, Steve and John.
8 easy miles today. The calf was perfect, so I think we're done with that. Unfortunately, the left achilles tendon tightened up a little during the run, so I didn't do 10 as I had originally planned on. It feels fine afterward, so I'm hoping it doesn't become something else I have to deal with. I'm icing it now as a precaution. Assuming it doesn't become an issue, the plan is to pick up the training cycle where I left off, meaning a possible HM in Central Park next weekend that I had previously registered for. I'll see how the week goes.

Thanks Jim. Based on today's run, I'd day the half is back in play.

This morning was six easy miles (8:45/mile) with almost no notice of the achilles tendon, and I didn't feel it at all afterwards. As long as the rest of the week goes well, I'll definitely plan on running the half. It's Grete Great Gallop HM in Central Park, named of course for Grete Weitz. I'll have to talk to Coach Mike to see how to handle it, but I have strong feeling that based on how the last week has went, he'll have me treat as an MP training run at best. That would be just fine with me.

Thanks Julie and Jim.

With the legs feeling like they're totally recovered from the little bout of niggles last week, I got back to speed work with a pretty good, not very long progression tempo run. After a 4 mile warm up, I ran 4 miles starting at about MP and then getting down to a 7:08 mile to finish (which is probably faster than I should be doing these runs). Everything felt good though, so I'll definitely plan on running the HM this weekend. As per Coach Mike's instructions, it won't be anything much faster than a long MP run.
Today's splits:

Thanks Kathy, Julie, and Liz

I ran Greta's Great Gallup HM in Central Park this morning. As I had planned, I ran it as an MP training run, and it turned out exactly as I had planned. After a congested first two miles, I was able to get down to MP and keep it there over the rolling hilly two loop + 1 mile course, with the last couple of miles well under MP. The goal for Philly is 3:25, which is BQ-5 min. Given that Central Park is far hillier than the Philly Marathon course, this leaves me pretty confident that I'm where I need to be with seven weeks until Philly, even though the Garmin shorts the course by about 2/10 mile, meaning my splits are a bit slower than what the watch shows.
Here's the splits and elevation:

Thanks Kenny and Julie.

After Saturday's HM, I did 4 miles recovery on Sunday, rested on Monday, 7 easy miles yesterday, and a moderately hard speed work session this morning. With the HM a few days ago, and a hard 20 scheduled for Friday, Coach Mike gave me a not too long workout for today. It started with three miles easy, than 1 x 16 min. hard, which I did almost all going uphill at about 7:30/mile, 4 min. recovery jog, followed by 1 x 12 min. at about 7:15/mile, than a cool down for a total of 8 miles. The legs feel pretty fresh afterward. I'm looking forward to Friday's 20 with probably about 8-9 miles at MP.
Here's today's workout:
