Dead Legs
ok my daughter and I are training for her 1st marathon we are in week 8 .We started with hals intermediate then stepped down to novice my daughter was not been doing well on the long runs. We have been doing about 25 miles per week .We do one of our runs in the woods and grass it's very hilly and challenging. After that run my daughter is complaining of dead legs we ran 2 days only 3 miles very slow. She has run several half marathons and has been running about 25-30 miles per week for the past 3 years so she has a pretty good base of running. Do you think it's just fatigue from our training ? thoughts? She is also trying to cut back on calories to lose weight

Re: Dead Legs
Running on grass always feel much harder to me than running on blacktop. Add in some hills and it does sound like it could be quite challenging. Perhaps it is more than she is ready for at this time.

Re: Dead Legs
I'd be willing to bet it's 100% related to her diet. Tell her to eat good (complex) carbs and not worry about her weight. It will come off as she adds mileage.

In my experience, right around the corner from dead legs is an injury. Time to tread lightly, improve her diet and then refocus on the mileage.

Re: Dead Legs
That phenomena used to happen to me quite alot when I was younger (probably about your daughter's age) and I always felt it was diet, stress and cycle related. I'm betting on all three. One way I used to combat it was with Epsom salt baths and drinking tonic water with quinine as well as working on the diet (no, a pint of Ben and Jerry's should not be dinner). Hopefully it will pass and she will feel stronger, but jsut have her go easy for a few days.
Re: Dead Legs
It's was probably the run that wore her out but I would agree with everyone here. While watching calories, you really need to feed your body the right foods in order to properly fuel your body for the weekly mileage. Your body will actually feel like it's starving. She may not lose the weight she wants to. Her body will want to store because it will know it's about to do a 20 miler.

Re: Dead Legs
That's my excuse to get loose on diet. Love those days.
