Warning: Nothing will be said about running in this first post.

Yes, Voice Cat LLC is my new business and passion. I am changing my career track from being an accountant to a voice-over artist, sometimes called a voice-over actor. A voice-over (VO) artist is the voice narrating the commercial on radio and TV. VO artists also voice e-learning, documentaries, audio books, safety videos, corporate videos, cartoon characters, movie trailers, video game characters, in addition to commercials. As you have heard, both men and women, serious and silly, plus deep and high pitched do voices.

Pretty much the same reason is used to get into VO...”People say I have a radio voice.” And I'm no different. Up until about the last 10-15 years, to do voices, you had to record the script at a recording studio and belong to the Union. The big bucks were made in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Like millions. People in the Union received residuals for every time a commercial ran in any city, at any time, for no matter how long the commercial ran.

There was a paradigm shift when the mp3 and wav formats came about about 10 years ago in the VO industry. Any person could build their own home studio with not much money, record the script, then email it to the customer. The VO industry changed to where 80-90% of the work is non-union, today. And there is so much variety in the voices. No longer is the Ed McMahon style announcer voice the first wanted.

So, I decided to get the training necessary to make money as a voice-over artist. As far as the company name, Reina came up with that. I had thought of about 150 different names, even The Voices of Oz for about 2 seconds, ran all of them through Go Daddy to see if the domain name was available, and we whittled it down to 5 names. Then, I engaged a patent lawyer to run the names through the US Patent & Trademark Office to see if the names were already registered (that little ® in a company name). Down to 2 names, I picked Voice Cat. Then, I started a logo design contest on 99designs.com which created the logo on the website and on FB.  She and I whittled it down to two and picked the winner.  I wanted Reina's input because she's female and she doesn't live in Texas.  A lot of people that pick VO artists are 25-35, so I wanted a younger looking logo and name.

Making money in VO is a numbers game, just like selling. I've never fancied myself to like selling, but I believe that I can do this. I just have to produce a lot of auditions on projects and book a few. I've been told that you have to make 100 pitches to get 2, so I'm going to do a whole lot of saturation.  The costs of a VO business is not great because there is no inventory, no office rent, and no employees.

There are websites like voices.com and voice123.com for commercials and short projects. Also, Amazon has a website to audition for doing audio books called ACX.com. For these websites, you scan what you can do, submit an audition, then go to the next one. Rinse. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.  In addition to cold-emailing.

My website address is VOICE-CAT.COM and y'all can go there and run the two demos on the website. One demo is for commercials and the other is for narrations.

Remember the '60s show “Batman” and so much was keying off the 'bat', e.g. Bat phone, the Bat cave, the Bat-arang? Well, I'm taking that tact with the Voice Cat LLC brand. You know at the bottom of websites many have for questions or info to email at “info@XYZ.com?” The email for questions on my website is AnswerCat@voice-cat.com and since I'm the president, my email address is TopCat@voice-cat.com. I'm also recording a podcast for my very own YouTube channel about accounting for voice over businesses called “Finance Cat podcast.” A YouTube channel is free...free I love. I also have a Twitter handle named VoiceCat, but I have never tweeted before, so I'll need to learn about that.

I would appreciate it if anybody you know or a friend knows somebody that needs their project voiced, that you would let me know so I can contact them and submit an audition. I may not be their voice, but they won't know until they hear it.

Holler with any questions. Thanks very much.

So, you say you've never worked in radio? Pity. You definitely have the voice for it.

In fact, if you haven't done it already, you may want to make contacts in the local broadcast community - be it public broadcasting (radio or TV) or commercial (radio, TV, commercial production). There may be opportunities there, as well as the "Have Voice Will Travel" approach.

I like your website. Getting to the sample tracks was simplicity itself. If you haven't done it, you may want to invest in a little SEO optimization for your website, as well. That could make it pop up faster in a Google search.

Good luck!

Never have.  I wanted to be a TV director for sports, but it seemed that accounting would pay better than a director.

Not sure that I'd want to be contact them, because let's say that I'm recording an audio book.  At the beginning, it would take me 12 hours to generate 1 hour of finished product due to editing, re-recording for mess ups, proofing, noise reduction, compressing, and mastering.  And when I'm very experienced, it's a 4:1 ratio.  And since doing things quickly is a service pillar that I want to be known for, I'm not sure if doing radio stuff locally would be a good use of time.  Besides, giants like Clear Channel and Cox have their own staff do stuff because they're cheap.  We've been told that pitching the bigs is a waste of time for radio gigs.

Thanks on the website!  Yeah, I wanted the logo to grab your attention, with the demos to be 'below the fold', but "Commercial Demo" and "Narration Demo" to lead the person below the fold.  Glad to hear my idea worked.  You ought to bring up the website on a smartphone.  It was designed in HTML5, so it's mobile phone friendly.

As far as the SEO, yeah, I thought I was done by flipping a switch, but under 'advanced' there's other stuff to do like the H1 Title (done, but almost as a watermark).  The SEO report says I need more text (236 words), some pictures, unique titles, and unique descriptions. I'll have to see how I can fix it.

I know Voice Cat LLC didn't come up with my website on the search, but there were a ton of updates on the USPTO application by various companies that does that kind of stuff.

I also need to re-do the FB photo, so it has the website address on it, especially until Voice Cat LLC in searches gets a better placement.

Thanks, Mark.

Wow!  Not sure what I was expecting but definitely not that.  You'll laugh but I listened to your demos and Paul Harvey came to mind...

Sounds like you've done your homework...hope it works as planned.  Sounds like way more fun than accounting and I've got an accounting background and actually do enjoy that type of work. Smile

That's very kind, Nancy, thanks.  I've always loved good storytellers like Paul Harvey, Charles Kuralt, Bob Dotson or a local TV person that died a few years back, Ron Stone.  You won't be surprised when I say that I'll be doing the books.  I found Peachtree 2010 on amazon for $10 and installed it.  It has all the bells and whistles needed to do service company accounting.  I can do that with my eyes closed.

Separately, I've been working on Mark's SEO suggestion.  I tweaked the website verbiage some, but it hasn't made much difference and I realize that I'm on the bottom of the pile.  Out of curiosity, I did a search on Bing on "Voice Cat LLC" and was surprised to see this thread as the #1 item of two results, both involving my company.

"Voice Cat" on google had voice-cat.com show on page 6.  Bing had this thread on page 7, but I didn't see the website name through the 13th page.  So, since the LLC is faring better than the .com, I changed the name of this thread to Voice Cat LLC & voice-cat.com, so the website would be included on the results.  We'll see how that works out.

---

Last nights tempo run was very nice, mostly because we had a bunch of rain yesterday (Galveston received about 8 inches) and with the rain and the clouds, the temperature at 6:30 was 77 degrees or about 15 degrees cooler.  I wasn't sweating buckets and wasn't chasing anyone.  The pace increased without a huge leap in HR...I like that!  168 was the target cadence.

The tempo run was 10 minute warm up, 15 minutes pretty hard, 10 minute cool down.  While we did the run at Memorial Park, we ran on a section where the gentle ups and downs were more frequent than the 3 mile loop.  I rather enjoyed the course and plan on incorporating the route on some future runs for the non-flatness feature.

2.98 miles, 36:51, 12:21 pace, 150 avg bpm, 171 max bpm during mile 3, 167 avg cadence, 0.78 m avg stride length
1.  12:36, 139 bpm, 166 spm, 77 sl
2.  11:57, 153 bpm, 168 spm, 80 sl  *nice
3.  12:29 pace, 157 bpm, 168 spm, 77 sl

I believe Tuesday's 'warm up' pace was at a slower pace and higher HR, but also at 90 degrees.  Next week's temps are to be in the low 90's and there's a threat for next Thursday to have a morning low of 70 with low humidity as a rare for August cool front is supposed to make it this far south.

I was very pleased with the effort.  Y'all have a good weekend and please do some searches on voice cat to see if it can be raised from the bottom.  Thanks.

Nice run!

BTW, I just put voice artist texas in a Google search and didn't see a trace of you in the first 25 pages of results. Have you considered consulting with one of those SEO-optimizing companies? (We have one associated with us here at the paper called Sprout Digital. I think they focus on local businesses, but they have a blog with tips on SEO and searching for somebody to help you. It's become a ridiculously specialized field, with a virtual arms race to make it to the first page of results.

I applaud you for doing what I don't have the guts to do - that is, bring on chapter 3 (you know chapter 1 as early career after college, chapter 2  - taking a backseat career-wise and raising my daughter (remember my hubby was in CA when she was in high school and we were in GA)).  In fact, I have no idea what I really want to do when I grow up and you do!!  Yeah to that!

I need to go over to your website and listen, but I do remember your voice from when we met in Houston back in 2012, and yes, you do have a voice for radio.  Very cool, Doug, very cool.

Thanks, thanks, and thanks, Miche1e.  I think it'll work out, it'll be (is) slow at the start, but I have a good control on personal expenses and have paid for all of the major outlays for the LLC.  It's all up to me, which I rather like.  And if it doesn't work, then I can go back to being a consultant.
mountandog wrote:this is way cool Doug.  Will have to listen to some of your work.  I could never start over and do something new.
Thanks, Michael.  Yeah, give a listen and help the website get more looks.  lol.

I hear you about starting over.  My dad started many businesses and none of them worked.  So, I never wanted to start my own company and have people's lives in my hands to succeed at something.  But voice over is the only method of selling (other than selling cars because I grew up in the car business) that I think I can do because I like the possibility of making a lot of money with something that doesn't need inventory, nor an office to rent.  So, my base fixed costs are small.

I just need to be like Edward Scissorhand and start creating.  I would really appreciate y'alls help, please, and keep your ears open.  I just need a shot at a project.  I know all too well that my voice won't work with all project, so the shot or EVEN just a name of who does communication or safety or public and/or investor relations.

Separately, I've recorded and uploaded to my (that's weird to read) YouTube channel the first podcast from Finance Cat on Maintaining Good Records - Mileage Logs.  A simple 4:20 low budget read.  I'm presently writing two more podcasts, one on Keeping Receipts and another on Revenue.  There are many other topics to cover.  I write them during a downtime or in the evenings.  The purpose of my podcasts is to educate AND to get my voice out there in some other medium than a demo.  Plus, maybe other voice over podcast hosts might want to book me on their show.  Another method of exposure.  The more good exposure, more opportunities and more projects and more money at a higher rate.

On the running front, I'm targeting running 10 miles in the morning.

I really appreciate y'alls interest and positivity.  Thank you. pale

Well, it doesn't seem like 2 days ago, but it was.  However, to answer your question, ma'am, it was an acceptable run.

It's been a while since running 10 miles, but I thought I could do it no matter the pace.  And the temperature of 81 degree with a dewpoint of 78 made it all the more challenging at 2 a.m. on Monday morning!!

As a side note, I've noticed on my 8 mile runs how my cadence of 168 degrades during miles 7 and 8.  So, I thought to make the goal of this run to maintain the 168 spm no matter the plodding because as I get along in miles during the next 5 months, I have to train my legs to maintain this turnover for 26 miles, then wing it for the .2 miles.  I think the cadence in my running is exactly similar to someone being able to maintain pace without concern to cadence.

10 miles, 2:23:35, 14:22 pace, 150 avg bpm, 162 max bpm during mile 4, 164 avg cadence, 0.68 m avg stride length, 1st half pace 13:50, 2nd half pace 14:54
1.  14:02, 137 bpm, 166 spm
2.  13:39, 146 bpm, 166 spm
3.  13:33, 150 bpm, 166 spm
4.  13:54, 155 bpm, 163 spm
5.  14:01, 154 bpm, 164 spm
6.  14:42, 152 bpm, 159 spm
7.  14:50, 151 bpm, 167 spm
8.  14:39, 150 bpm, 164 spm
9.  15:11, 152 bpm, 162 spm
10. 15:04, 156 bpm, 163 spm

So looking at the cadence and arbitrarily suggesting a variance of +/- 4 spm (164-172 spm), then I was within tolerance 6 of the 10 miles and the bpm was very similar.  More work is needed and maybe even drop the cadence.

Tuesday was a track run of 5-400 w/200 recovery.  That seemed to be fine, if it wasn't for the HR monitor battery going down.  I'll post the numbers tomorrow, hopefully.

Oh, forgot to mention that we had a dry line come through, yesterday, and our dewpoints are 63 degrees, right now.  Our low in the morning is supposed to be around 67!!!!!  So, I'm going to run about 3 miles in the morning to feel all that drier air.  Tempo run tomorrow evening.

Nice work, and I hope the tempo run went well this evening.

I think you're plan to get your name out there is a good one. Here's one idea that might help you start building the resume: Offering your services pro bono to local nonprofits as a volunteer service. I'm sure there are many worthy organizations in your area, and maybe even some for which you may have some affinity. I bet they'd appreciate the help, or at least the offer. They often operate on a shoestring. And at this point for you, a credit is a credit.

Thanks, Mark, on the plan.  Funny you should mention pro bono, because voicing a book on Royalty Share on ACX.com is like pro bono because until the audio book sells, it's like a pro bono.  BUT I picked a book and submitted an audition, yesterday.  I got the gig.  It's about a 1 hour book, so I can say now that I have a credit.  I have to submit a 15 minute version so the rights holder can like it, ask for corrections, or not like it.  I've done it, but I think I have to submit it as a wav file.  There are some non-profits that I can do some work for them.

---

Tuesday was a track workout and I didn't do half bad.  5 x 400, with 200 recovery in between.  We were supposed to run each lap at about what we could do all 5.  HRM wasn't working
Lap 1 - 2:46.9
Lap 2 - 2:37.1
Lap 3 - 2:30.3
Lap 4 - 2:36.3
Lap 5 - 2:30.2

Surprisingly, they felt good, keeping in mind that I ran 10 miles the morning before.  And Wednesday morning, I wasn't aching.  I think my body is adjusting to this program.

Wednesday was a rest day. This morning, it was 68 degrees with a dewpoint of 66.  This was the first morning in the 60's since the first week of June and is very unusual, as it's a month early.  So, I decided to run this morning just to remember what it felt like.  3 miles. I sure didn't sweat as much.

3 miles, 39:21, 13:07 pace, 146 avg bpm, 167 average cadence, 0.73 m avg stride length
1.  13:29, 139 bpm, 167 spm, 71 sl
2.  12:57, 147 bpm, 168 spm, 74 sl
3.  12:54, 153 bpm, 167 spm, 75 sl

No pain and it went well.

Tonight's tempo run.  3 miles, easy on the 1st, a little faster on the 2nd, and faster on the 3rd.  It was around 90 at the start and probably 85 at the end.  Still drier than in past evenings.  I was going to run my own tempo with the gnome set at 168.  The gnome was the boss.

I wasn't going to run faster at the start of mile 2, but just let it happen.

The 3rd mile was faster, somewhat because I was going to see if I could shadow a couple of girls.  No peer pressure, but just seeing what could happen and how it felt.  Still kept the pace, but was leaning to go faster and lengthening the stride (I haven't looked at the stride length figures, yet).  This morning's run had no negative effect on tonight's run.

3 miles, 37:06, 12:21 pace, no credible HR numbers, 166 avg spm, 0.78 avg stride length
1.  12:47, 164 spm, 77 sl
2.  12:34, 167 spm, 77 sl
3.  11:45, 168 spm, 82 sl

I was huffing, but I was able to hold on to the pace.  I wasn't gasping for air after or during the run.  Felt really good.  Resting until Monday's long run.

Oh, Mark and Nancy, I wanted you to know that due to the jet stream that's flowing northwest with some of y'alls smoke, makes a bend east, then south around Minnesota, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.  It's hazy and the weatherman said y'all were to blame.  He specifically mentioned you two by name.  Suspect  Hrumph.

Your audio samples sound like commercials to me.  I don't doubt this venture will be a successful one.

My $.02 on the website - logo in the background is a bit busy to be the background, especially once you start scrolling and objects move over it.  Background color contrast with the title is minimal, and even for young eyes like me, straining.

Mike, thanks for stopping by.  Yeah, I know but it's done by people that know the industry better than this newbie, so I'm hoping they know what they're doing.  You will be the 2nd to know if it is a successful venture.

As far as the background, that's the logo that I'm pushing.  It's on everything, either with a black background or white.  For someone in the VO industry, the idea was for the logo to pop in your face, then make it dirt easy to find the demo section, which is usually the #1 reason to come to a website.  And since I'm new, I don't have many demos, nor do I have much else to say.  And it's my first website design.

Now, if you're talking about the watermarked "Voice Cat LLC", well that's for SEO purposes.  Maybe I can make it smaller.  I do appreciate the comments, Mike.  Honestly do.

Sorry about the haze Doug but at this point I don't care where it goes or who it affects as long as it clears up here!  It's maybe a bit better but not much.  Still not able to exercise outside...I would if I was healthy but under the circumstances not willing to risk it.  We're right on the bubble of the air quality being unhealthy for all and unhealthy for the medically compromised.  Change in the weather in the prediction...fingers crossed.

Oh...nice job on the track work!

Well, I don't think we'll be asking for reparations.

No need to try to run in that kind of environment.   I imagine the high winds blew some of the smoke out of the area, but it just blow the smoke west and southwest of y'all to your area.

It's both.  I finished narrating my first book, a short one, but it was a guinea pig to where I can get my feet wet with the interface software that records the words.  Plus figuring the mechanics of how and when to do the record, edit, and master the chapters is something that I'm working on to get more efficient.  Thanks for asking, Nancy.

---

As far as the running part of the week, overall it was a good week for running.

Monday was a 10 mile long run over the same route as the prior Monday 10 miler.  However, it was about 9 degrees cooler than last week's and it was very different.  Monday, the 24th, was 81 degrees and a 14:22 pace.

10 miles, 2:15:47, 13:34 pace, 147 avg bpm, 164 max HR during mile 10, 166 avg spm, 0.71 m avg stride length
1.  13:39, 120 bpm, 167 spm, 70 sl
2.  13:25, 144 bpm, 168 spm, 72 sl
3.  13:24, 144 bpm, 166 spm, 72 sl
4.  13:20, 145 bpm, 167 spm, 72 sl
5.  13:11, 146 bpm, 167 spm, 73 sl
6.  13:11, 150 bpm, 165 spm, 74 sl
7.  13:13, 151 bpm, 167 spm, 73 sl
8.  13:36, 155 bpm, 166 spm, 71 sl
9.  14:14, 156 bpm, 165 spm, 69 sl
10. 14:34, 157 bpm, 162 spm, 68 sl

I've always hypothesized that for every 5 degrees above 60 degrees, it adds 30 seconds per mile in pace.  So, week over week, 9 degrees cooler worked out to 48 seconds faster.  It means I'll have to adjust my hypothesis for 25 seconds for every 5 degree increase.  Pretty close.

I'll post the other runs later.  Thanks for stopping by.

While I have a couple of minutes, I'm going to try to catch up a bit.  This morning, the effects of Friday's heavy rain from a cool front bore fruit.  The morning low in the neighborhood was 59 degrees with a dewpoint of 52.  Monday morning, it'll be around  64 for my long run.  It's been a while.  This is about 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

So, I need to report Tuesday, September 1, track workout.  It was 5- 400x400's.
1.  10:31 pace
2.  10:41 pace
3.  10:51 pace
4.  11:09 pace
5.  10:31 pace

I like a few laps, and I need to work on them, but I don't have the endurance to do more than 5 and will not hurt myself doing more (that's a preview of the September 8 workout, when I get to it).

Nice job on that last lap Doug.

I enjoyed the track work I was able to do this winter/spring and I do think it's helpful.  Good decision to ease into it.

Can't wait to hear how the next track workout went...

very cool! We're big read-aloud fans and I have heard audible recommended dozens of times for audio books. Either way, I think it's really cool you're doing something new that you love. If you like children's lit, have you heard of Jim Weiss? I listened to a podcast he gave on reading aloud imperfectly.

Sounds like running is going well, too!

Thanks, Nancy.  The next track workout was excessive, in my opinion, so I did something a bit different, but still challenging to me.  However, that's about 2 or 3 runs away.

Thursday, Sept 3 in the morning.
Thursday evenings are the tempo run piece of the Houston Fit training program.  I've been thinking that my mileage is less than it should be, so I had started running on Thursday mornings to increase the weekly mileage and loosen up the legs with an easy run before that evening's tempo run.  If the legs don't feel too swell in the morning, then I stop and walk home.  The distance starts at 3 miles and will probably increase as I think it'll work.

This particular morning was 73 degrees with a dewpoint of 73 degrees.  The target cadence remains at 168 spm.

3 miles, 40:02, 13:20 pace, no HR info, 167 cadence, 0.72 m avg stride length.
1.  13:34, 167 spm, 71 sl
2.  13:14, 168 spm, 73 sl
3.  13:12, 168 spm, 73 sl

I don't remember much about this run, but it looks fine.  My HR strap wasn't working.  I changed out the battery (boy, that's a little Phillips head screw.  I put the battery holder in a bowl, so I wouldn't lose the screws!), but that didn't work.  I wished that I remembered how much effort I put in.  Oh, well.

Thursday evening tempo
The tempo workout was a 10-15-10 minute workout and it was 85 degrees at the start, but cooled slowly as the sun lowered.  The rest of my group (usually 5 or 6 people) are 3-6 minutes per mile faster than I, which is nothing to me because I can only do what I can do.  We ran this on a piece of a trail I run when I run to Memorial Park.  It ended up being about 2.64 miles, but I had to walked another 1/4 mile to get back to the starting point.  I should've ran a different path.

2.64 miles, 12:50 pace, 167 spm, 0.75 m avg stride length
1.  12:49
2.  12:45
3.  12:59 pace

Hey, Julie!  Thanks for stopping by.  I like children's books, but don't remember many of the authors.  I will look up Jim Weiss' podcast and give it a hearing or 2 or 3.

Yes, the running is going well and the body is hanging in there as long as I don't get stupid.
