Congratulations on the HM...1:43:49 is pretty darn good and not too far off from my prediction (I am glad you were on the faster side of it)

Woohoo! Way to go on your race. Hope you got to enjoy the experience in NOLA as you have in the past.

Re: Back to Boston Redux
Well, I wish my cold was completely gone, but alas, it is back with a vengeance. As for NOLA, as fun as always and as fun as I remember, and as for the race, not a bad time, but not a well run race by any means. In fact, I was not smart at all even though I had smart intentions. My intent was to run with the 1:45 pace group until mile 7 or and then pick it up, but stupidly, I ended up in front of the group by a bit around mile 3, so rather than slowing back, I tried to keep up the pace. Well, I paid for it (and for being slightly dehydrated from the cold medicine that I took) at mile 11, and even though I wouldn't let myself walk, I had a weird dizzy spell and my paced dropped by 1 min per mile. I regrouped for the last mile, but that was not what I wanted and I really didn't feel good for the rest of the day. Made enjoying food and beer not as pleasant as I wanted.
As for the 1:43:49, I'm happy with the time even after bleeding a lot from mile 11 to the finish. I did finish 3 in my AG, and I was happy to see I was competitive (and I was happy to see that I would have been 5th in the 55-59 AG as that always makes me smile to know that us old birds can still run hard). I thought I was in that type of shape barring my cold, and I'm probably in slightly better shape. My issue still seems to be my mojo as it is just tough this winter for some reason. I did decide to take this week as recovery to get rid of this damn cold so that I can really start embracing Boston mileage soon.

Good work Michele! I think I am going to have train even harder for Boston, so you do not run my legs off

Maybe call your daughter to ask her what you would tell her to eat and do, if she had the cold. There's nothing wrong with rest.

Once again Michele set an appropriate goal and then nailed it. I guess it's an indication of experience...and hard work!
Congrats Michele. Excellent race especially considering you were battling a cold.

Re: Back to Boston Redux
Tough week in the beginning as all my runs felt hard and I felt like I just wasn't recovering well. Started to up my protein intake and go back to taking some iron, and finally today's run, even on the snow, felt better than it has in days. We have only 4" of the white stuff so far and like Nick, we are due to get some 8-12" which I will believe when I see it. They are saying the most snow will be west of I71 and north of I80 here in NE Ohio which is exactly where I live. Figured that I had better get out today as the next couple of days might be relegated to indoors (especially since tomorrow's high temperature is supposed to be 13F). Decided not to drive to the Super Bowl Party as it is 30 min south of here and it might be a bit mushy/slushy/icy by the games end. I figure everyone there just wants to give me crap about deflategate anyway (Go Pats).
It's February - got to make the most of it.

Re: Back to Boston Redux
Glad that I am finally feeling pretty good. Tuesday brought a "speed" workout done on the roads with group and even though they were a bit snow covered, we were able to get to the pace for the most of it. That of course was short lived as it snowed again Wednesday evening leaving about 2" for the morning, but I ran again outside (only 6 miles) as it was expected to be very frigid on Thursday. And indeed it was - ran 7 miles inside with 4.5 at tempo pace or just under 8 min per mile and was very pleased as it didn't feel that hard at all. Rest day today and then 14-15 tomorrow over hills in 30F temps - yeah!
Re: Back to Boston Redux
Do you typically have any further non-running related maladies, e.g colds, bronchitis, the heartbreak of psoriasis, leading up to Boston or was your cold it?
And does the snow on the ground give a backdoor rest to your muscles because you can't either do the distance, pace or both that you would like to do?
(I want to be ready, in case you're getting bet on in Vegas.)

Re: Back to Boston Redux
Cute, Doug. I don't usually even get colds, so I hope this is it. The thing with snow is that you end up running inside more than you would like, and this brings faster miles on the indoor track (mostly for me) so the same mileage unless I am forced inside for long runs. So far, I've done my long runs outside. For instance, today we ran just over 14 miles on a very hilly course. You could tell by our mile paces where it was hilly and where it was exceptionally snowy, but for the most part the roads were clear.

Re: Back to Boston Redux
Looks like I might have run my last run outside for a few days as we are expecting negative number temperatures for the next few days. I'm hoping that they are right that Saturday morning might be around 12F rather than 2F like it is supposed to be tomorrow morning. Running 15-16 miles on the treadmill or indoor track does not seem palatable but might be probable. We are set to do a 5 mile tempo run on the indoor track tonight as we actually cancelled the outdoor workout since it is 9F now! Walking the dog is not pleasant, but she doesn't even seem to notice.
Speaking of my dog, it appears as if she may have a growth in her bladder. Things are inconclusive now, but I have started her on the medication which is actually an NSaid that is said to shrink such growths. Nothing will completely cure according to various websites but the success with this medication is such that the dogs tend to get 2+ more years. She is just over 10 which is not really old for her breed, and she is acting so completely normal. I guess we will know more at the end of the month.

Re: Back to Boston Redux
Here's to hoping that your Saturday morning is on the warmer side. I know that mine is going to be arctic cold -15 with 20-30 mph winds, so the wind chill will be way lower. Luckily I only have 6 miles to do, so I will try to brave it outside.
Also, I hope that everything will be alright with your dog. Hopefully, the medication will do what it is supposed to (fingers crossed).
Stay warm!!

Re: Back to Boston Redux
I'm so glad that I was battling those temps early this winter when my mileage wasn't as high or as important. About the time I figured out how to deal with cold weather running it warmed back up.
Take care in those temps...hope they don't force you inside for to much longer.
Sorry to hear about the dog...hope the medication does the trick.

Sorry about your dog! Here's hoping the medication does its work.
And what is up with your weather? You folks are getting pounded by winter this year. I'm starting to wonder if the Boston Marathon is going to end up looking more like the Iditarod this year...

At least you guys are seasoned pros with this sort of weather. If this was happening out here, we'd have already started gnawing on each others' ankles.

OMG!!! I honestly don't know if I would be a runner if I lived there. I feel so spoiled never having to deal with that...

Holy jumpin' catfish.
I'm used to snow accumulations like that -- in the mountains (though, alas, not this year).
Hopefully the snow is the sort that packs down nicely and gives good traction, at least?
