Western States 100 is ON!
The Western States 100 - The Superbowl of Ultras is on today.
Nick Clark from Ft Collins has been looking good this year. Geoff Roes is the favorite. Tony Krupicka is an DNS (must still be hurt from those Minimus Trails). Never count out the old man (41yrs) Dave Mackey.
But through Poppy Trailhead, it is Spaniard Kilian Jornet in the front.
Who's your horse in the race?

Well it is always easy to go with the favorite, I still like the old guy Dave Mackey. This race is awesome. Mike M and I are both going to try to get in it in 2013 and do it together.

Hmmm...you tell me. I don't really follow the ultra circuit.

Western States 100 LIVE
Thanks for getting this started Tim.
You may monitor the race standings LIVE all day (and into tomorrow) via the Western States 100 Live Webcast and get commentary via the WSER 100 2011 LIVE Blog.
Kilian Jornet is one of a few new breed ultra distance runners (along with Anton (Tony) Krupicka). Goeff Roes is an animal. Roes is my pick to take it again this year. Early standings don't mean squat in a race like this. It's all about doing what is necessary to work through the inevitable tough patches so that you can keep up the pace when it matters.
On the women's side, I like Meghan Arbogast even though she's 50 and in a race with several younger top contenders including Nikki Kimball and Kami Semick.
EDIT: This is one h3ll of a race. Just to give you some flavor of the event, here is the latest entry from the LIVE Blog: Via Tim Twietmeyer, there was an injury on the far side of the Escarpment. Female, broken leg, helicoptered out, stable.
@ Mr. Schumacher, maybe it's time you come out to the JFK50 so you can get a taste of a trail ultra. registration for this year's race begins July 1 at the JFK 50 Mile Home Site. I won't be running it this year, but I could crew for you.

Alright Kevin, this years JFK is Nov 19th. Over a month after I run Chicago. Looks like I will be pulling the trigger on this and doing my first Ultra this coming fall. You have been trying to get me out there to do this race for the past couple of years. What am I getting myself into? Ok so I will have you to crew for me and maybe I can get MR.Mckee out there also to help crew. I make the A standard which is good also do you know what the cost is?

Maybe we can get Scott C to join you (he turns 50 this year ).Schuey wrote:Alright Kevin, this years JFK is Nov 19th. Over a month after I run Chicago. JFK50 registration fee history: 2008 $135; 2009 $145; 2010 $150. So, not as much as NYCM, but not as little as Chicago. I can give you the low-down on the course profile and what others say about it. In brief: it's 2 miles UP to the Appalachian Trail, 13 miles ON the AT (only some of which is gnarly), 26.3 miles on a flat gravel towpath finishing with 8 miles on delightfully rolling country roads. It's NOT good preparation for WS100, which is ALL on mountain trails. But it should give you a nice taste of an ultra over 3 types of terrain with outstanding course support [lots of water stations that include real food].

I like Kilian - he is a beast.
I believe he recently (like last week or two) ran a record time up Mount Olympus in Greece. He did the same last year for Mt. Kilimanjaro

Re: Western States 100 is ON!
Kilian is in front through Michigan Bluff. Roes is back in 20th through El Dorado Creek. Not sure what (if anything) happened.

Female leader 42yr. old Garneau 52.9 miles in.

Roes dropped out at Michigan Bluff. He was behind Tracy Garneau by 10 minutes at that point.

Sad to see Roes go
But how amazing is Killian!? He's my age, that's incredible!

Clark and Bragg only a minute behind Kilian. Less then 30 miles to go. Should be an interesting finish to this one.

I'm pulling for Clark. First, he is a semi-local guy. One of my co-workers runs with him and has crewed for him in other ultras.

Kilian starting to put a little space between him and Clark. Kilian at the 79.8 mark, Clark 78 miles.
Garneau still leading the ladies.

The top 4 men are still close. Lots of miles still to cover.
Re: Western States 100 is ON!
Kilian went out strong last year and faded at the end. Both Roes and Krupicka passed him.
This time Roes dropped at 55 and Tony is hurt.
Clark finished 4th last year.
It was the first WS100 for Kilian, Tony and Nick.

Re: Western States 100 is ON!
Well Tim it looks like a different story this year. Kilian looks as if he is getting stronger and pulling away from Clark. Still Time for Clark and anything can happen in a race this long. I would think Kilian has to be getting a boost knowing he only has 15 miles to go!
Kilian 85.2
Clark 79.8
Garneau still leading the women and is now 18th overall. Looks like she is picking off people as the race goes on.
So Kilian made it to the 85.2 mark in 13:07:00 avg. pace of 9:14! That is pretty amazing, lets remember this is up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, not on our local roads.

With a little more then 10 miles to go Kilian still leads. Wolfe made a comeback and passed Clark. Wolfe is about 3 mins behind Kilian and Clark is 4 mins behind Kilian. Will Wolfe or Clark catch and pass Kilian in the final 10 miles?? Shaping up to be one heck of a finish!

What also amazes me is how fast they turn around those aid station stops, even this far into the race.
That's a good lesson for us newbie trail runners who slowly linger at the food table like it's some sort of Vegas buffet.
