Fleet Feet - HMSA Classical 25K Empty Fleet Feet - HMSA Classical 25K

This race is the 2nd in a series of 3 races in the Houston Marathon Warm-Up Series.  The first race was a half marathon on October 27, then the HMSA 25K (today), then the Sugar Land 30K on December 15.  The Houston Marathon is on January 19.

Today was cold and representative of the temperatures on January 19.  42, overcast and windy.  The 25K is a 3 loop course that begins downtown.  I ran it back in 2004 for my first marathon in 2005 and in 2011 as a 26.2K race called the Texas Metric Marathon.  My 25K PR is a 12:33 pace or 3:15:03.  I had a tailwind going west, then a 10 o'clock to 4 o'clock crosswind going back east to downtown.

I've had some bio-mechanical issues as a result of my left foot collapsing medially to the degree that my heel strike is medial.  It caused my calves to to ache as if the muscle was strained.  After 5 weeks of PT and switching from Vomeros to Kinvara shoes, I'm about 90% fixed.  This race was to validate the 90%.  A PR was possible.

The goal was to run it at 75% or 150 bpm.  If I felt well enough, I was going to run the last 3 miles faster.  I stretched my calves prior to the race...a change in approach for me.  I also parked 2 miles from the start line and ran/walked the two miles as a warm up...another change.  At the start of the race, I got up to 150 real quick, which surprised me.

The course is gently rolling, by Houston standards.  Whenever I looked at my watch and saw I was over 150, I slowed down.  There was very slight right calf pain through the middle of the miles, but was almost insignificant.

So, to be briefer, the first 2 loops I ran at a 12 minute pace, then I increased a bit for the last loop and finished with a time of 3:05:29, a pace of 11:55, and a PR of almost 10 minutes from 2004.

I think I'm on the verge of a PR for Houston (2012 - 5:45:11).  Thanks for reading.

Way to go Doug, it's so exciting to be on the verge of a huge breakthrough.  Don't do anything stupid between now and then and make it a reality.

Congrats, Doug on an excellent race!  I think you are on the verge of a PR too and you have been working hard towards it.  Now rest up and recover well for the next one.

Big PR.  Awesome job.  Keep it relaxed for the Full and you'll nail that too.

Thanks for the kudos, especially Tim's "Don't do anything stupid..." comment.  That wrote like something I would write for someone else.  I particularly enjoyed that and will use it on future race reports, as to whether I did something stupid or not.

I also want to single out Mark, Michele and Jim for their immeasurable help on this scheme of mine to get faster, unconventionally, as my path wouldn't have been as straight without them.
