Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Ok, I'm dreading the fact that I might have to run 16 on the treadmill on Saturday, but conditions are not looking good outside (it will be warmer, but we got 4" today and and expecting more). Keep up the good work, Charles as you are certainly gaining mental strength as well as physical.
Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
A half marathon, plus a 5K this morning on the TM (yes, I did the .2 extra added to my 16 mile run to make it exact. ! I felt pooped from the start for some reason, but I refuse to bail on any runs this time - especially the long ones. Last year in preparation for the Indiana Trail 100, I found all kinds of excuses for cutting runs short.
And I paid the price for it.
The IT 100 is 3 months away.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
An 18-mile TM run yesterday morning before 8:00 AM, followed by a 7-miler today.
We are still frozen here in southern Indiana and I know that the IT 100 route is piled high with snow and ice.
According to my schedule, I am supposed to do a 50K next week.
I have little hope that the IT 100 route will be better by then, or even a week later.
So . . . I will stick to schedule and do a 50K TM next Thursday.
I plan on going to Snap at midnight or 1:00 AM and doing it.
I drink a lot because I am sweating like crazy, so it works out well to take a very short bathroom break every 4-5 miles to replicate the aid stations at the IT 100. I will have some snacks and energy stuff, plus Scaps.
On these long runs I usually run 5 - 5.5 mph and do walk breaks never less than 4mph.
I will start at a 5/1 ratio and stay with that for many hours before switching to 4/1.
Also, now and then, I will do a longer walk with the TM at 10-15%.
I always wear a buff now, and that helps a lot with my streaming sweat.
I will bring 2 so I can switch them out - probably an extra shirt or two also.
I have not run in Hokas since I have been running on the TM, but I will use them some for this training event.
No one will be there, so I can find movies and turn up the volume.
Usually no one is there until 5 AM.
It will be an interesting challenge.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
I am getting ready for my night/early morning run on Wednesday/Thursday.
I am out of my Gu Chocolate Outrage gels, so I guess this will have to do for the chocolate part of my nutrition. I will also have S-caps, PBJs, orange slices (candy and real) and Coke. Now I am thinking I will start before midnight and go until 8:00 AM. I will easily get a 50K and might go a "little ways" past it if I feel like it. Before the race, I will have one more 50K and a 50-mile training run. The rest will be 20 miles or less for the long runs.
Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
I got the body for my custom Indiana electric guitar on Sunday from my friend, Larry.
It is sanded, but not finished - when it is, the grain will pop beautifully.
I will take it soon to my guitar tech guy and he will help with pickup, bridge placement and neck choice.
I want it plain and simple - one pickup and one knob - volume.
It is going to be a novelty for sure, but I think the kids will like it when I brandish it during my Indiana Bicentennial show.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Got 32 miles during the 8 hours at Snap Fitness.
I honestly wasted time at my "aid station" - I took 7 quick breaks I think and I always was off the TM for at least 5 minutes and sometimes 10 or more. My actual overall pace was in the 13's and when running I always was going 5.5 mph.
My stomach got a little iffy at one point (too much Coke I think), so I slowed way down for a short stretch and it calmed right down.
I also got really sleepy around 3 AM, but got through it watching ultrarunning movies on my iPad.
Overall a good experience and I know I will not be in aid stations that long in the actual race.
I also think those 32 miles would have been "easier" on a real trail!
I NEVER want to do that many miles on a TM again!
Nap time!

Eight hours, 32 miles... on a treadmill, overnight.
Words fail me.
Except: Good job. And: You're nuts.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
But Mark - I was not running the entire 8 hours - so it was not THAT bad!
I really felt that I took it easy the entire time - I just wanted to make sure that all of my running phases were at 5.5 mph.
I would be thrilled to hold that for 50 miles or so at the IT 100.
Yesterday was a confidence builder for me and good experience running at night (though it was not dark).
My body SURE knew it was my bedtime!
On another forum, a guy told me he has done many 30-50 mile runs on a TM.

I think it is going to turn out to be pretty cool looking.
But I am 62 and that can't help ME be cool to the kids, unless I deliver some fun songs!

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
And my cross training in action! : )
Shot with a Nikon D300, timer and a 10.5mm fisheye.
I set it for 3 second intervals, but 1 or 2 would have been better.
A soundtrack from one of my musicals titled "Two Christmases" and the song is "This Quilt".
I am playing guitar and banjo on of it, hired a fiddle player and another friend played bass.

Finally a run outside!
I did not think I could get a run in before the rain, but I did. I wish I had started earlier so I could have done the full 14 on my schedule. I opted for 12 and got back to the car before the rain started. It will be windy tomorrow, but I hope to get back out there for 10-12 more and maybe again on Saturday as well. My first run outdoors for a LONG time.
Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Outside is nice. And you were pretty speedy out there, Charles!
Say, is that an Ultraspire pack you're wearing? Love to get a review.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Very nice review, Charles. I'd give it two thumbs up.
I have two bladder-based packs (both Camelbaks - one holds 100 ounces!) that get me through unsupported long runs (there's no water sources on the trails I run), but I'd like something better for racing. I used dual handhelds last time and got wildly frustrated because it left me unable to access gels, S-caps or food without a lot of fumbling and cursing. You don't need that sort of negativity out there on the trails.
I've been thinking about one of the Ultimate Direction vests that carry the bottles up front (easier to refill), but the Aspire brand looks pretty interesting, too. I know aid station workers definitely prefer bottles over bladders.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
With that small bladder though, I can pull it out easily and get it filled.
Most AS folks, so far, know how to do the slider top for me - or I do it myself quickly.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Well . . . at least you did not think "Bulk" Hogan!
I have been slowly dropping weight and finally am down to 160 - heading to 155.
I use the various weight machines at Snap Fitness, but I am just going for strength - not glistening huge muscles.
I really like buffs now for the hot or cold. I got a couple made out of Coolmax Extreme fabric that really pulls away the sweat.
I always have sweat pouring down my face and back and these really help and I LOOK SO COOL!
Not at age 62!
My transition to running outside is getting there.
The TM has brought my"cruising" pace up - which I needed.
However, my quads, especially are pretty sore have two 12 & 13.5 runs Thursday and Saturday.
Not terrible, but I am feeling it, so it is a good thing I still have 2 months before the race.

Didn't realize that was a buff you were wearing. Very nifty. Especially with the 'stache, it gives you a nice biker look. Either that, or a pirate who still has both eyes. (Arr, matey.)

Today's COLD run
A little video about my run with a friend at Brown County State Park.
It is much hillier there than Chain 'O Lakes - I am grateful for that.
It was a workout for 16 miles, which included an ankle roll.
And it was COLD!
Not mountains, but more than I have done for a while.
The IT 100 route still has 18 inches of snow on it, so no use heading up there.
I am going to learn how to tape my ankle better for more support.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
I can only cringe at the ankle roll. Be careful!
Those hills look impressive. You didn't say what the temperature was, but when I checked in nearby Bedford this afternoon, it was in the teens, so I'm guessing that's about right, yes? Brr. Anybody else ready for spring?

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Well, thankfully - my ankle is not sore, in pain or bruised this morning. Just a teeny bit of tightness.
If it had been bad, I would have been forced to stop after the first 8-mile loop.
I thought we had really slowed down, but our overall average pace was under 15:00.
My Garmin wimped out after 2 hours - need to replace it - so I did not know what we were doing.
Well, I knew that Ben - ex-Marine - was invisibly towing me up and downs those hills and inclines.
He is great to train with.
Oh and I did not drink much because my Hydrapak hose froze up real fast!
Average - 14:46 - that includes falling down! : )

Good news on the teeny bit of tightness. As far as the Garmin, if you just want to replace the model, you may call Garmin and see how much a refurb is. My 305 crashed and they offered me a refurbed replacement for around $99 dollars. They stopped manufacturing the 305's.
Continued slight, instead of bad, injuries if you have to have them at all.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .
Yesterday I did no running or walking, but did workout at Snap Fitness.
Today my ankle felt better, so I thought I would zip 12 miles away (by car) and go to the Jackson-Washington Forestry. A beautiful place with some nice trails, including some with very steep hills.
For today, I thought I would use this jeep trial/road that leads up to a trail for some hill repeats.
I can park my car at the bottom, so if need be, I can limp back to the car easily.
As I was getting ready to run, up walks the guy you see in the photo - very random event and funny.
Not super steep, but if you run it you can get your heart rate up there.
