Loch Ness, home of the legendary monster... There will be a gathering near the edge of the loch in early October, all with something to hunt, but the targets have nothing to do with the monster - some will be trying to get through 26.2 for the first time, others looking to improve their best time, and the chosen few will be aiming for the big beasts of the marathon - sub-3, and maybe even getting down towards or below 2:30...

My goals for the race aren't quite that lofty, though - the main aim for me in this race is to complete the distance, with any sort of decent time being a bonus. I've had a bit of bother with injury since my last marathon (in Edinburgh, last May) - had about four months where I wasn't able to run over the winter, and I'm currently working through a problem with my left hip that's making it painful to run. The travel and accomodation are booked, though, so I'll be making the trip to Inverness if I feel it's at all possible for me to get through the race.

Since Nessie will be chasing you, your time ought to be a PR. Take care of that injury and keep up the training.

Thanks for the visits and comments, Peg, Michele and Kenny.

Peg - unfortunately, I've not had the best of luck with injuries over the last few years, so this isn't the first time that I've had to deal with needing to take time out of a training cycle to heal up. I've had some surprisingly good marathons at the end of those training cycles, though, so there's still hope for a good race.

Michele - from what I've heard, it's a pretty good course for a PR (and not because Nessie is chasing the runners!) - it's net downhill by quite a bit (mostly in the first half), although there's a fair bit of 'up' to go with quite a lot of 'down'.

Kenny - thanks, I'm looking forward to the race - am doing what I can to get the injury sorted quickly so I can get back to running.

Not a lot to report on today - taking it relatively easy for the most part, although I have done a fair bit of stretching and a little session with the foam roller. The problem I have at the moment is that I'm not sure what I can do to keep things ticking over in the meantime without aggravating the pain in the hip - I get the odd twinge when I'm walking (particularly if I've been sitting down for a while beforehand), and it didn't feel all that good when I took the bike to work one day last week.

Training had been going pretty well before the injury - had started running again back in March after the enforced rest over the winter, and had been able to build up mileage pretty smoothly. The two long runs (15 on 20th June, 17 on 27th June) before the injury went very well - both ended up being a little longer than I had anticipated because I was feeling good towards the end of the run, and I felt that I could have kept going fairly comfortably on both (although I was starting to run out of energy at the end of the 17 - nothing that wouldn't have been sorted with a bit of something sugary, though). There were warning signs on that 17-miler, though - the first few miles were a bit of a struggle because of the injury, although it eased off pretty significantly once I had warmed up.

The runs since have mostly been pretty decent (in terms of distance/pace/heart rate), but that little nagging ache has been getting a little bit worse with each run - ended up going to see the physio last Tuesday. The diagnosis was that the problem was being caused by a weak (and very tight) left hip flexor - got it stretched out pretty good during that session, and I've been doing a decent bit of stretching every day since. I'm back at the physio next Tuesday, where I'll hopefully be able to start doing some strengthening exercises (and getting back to running...)

No running over the last couple of days (just keeping up with the stretching), but that's given me more time to watch the coverage of the Tour de France - the two big mountain stages more than lived up to their billing! To make it even better, there's a very significant time trial to come tomorrow, with the yellow jersey on the line...

While I'm keeping away from running until I see the physio on Tuesday, today was a good day - on the golf course in the morning, and out on the bike for a while in the afternoon. It was a strange round of golf - didn't seem to hit all that many good shots, but managed to find a way to get the ball around in a decent score (which is satisfying in its own way). I had been holding back on cycling as well until the ache in my hip had died down a bit (as I felt that cycling to work had made it a bit worse when I was last on the bike ten days or so ago) - chose a route that gave me a few options on how far I needed to go, including an option to bail out and only do 6 miles or so, but ended up doing 14 miles without any trouble. I'll see how I feel in the morning, but I may give the bike another try tomorrow afternoon - it's not running, but it feels good to be able to go out and feel like I'm working hard... (I was going to say 'go out and work up a sweat, but I suspect that might not be appropriate at this point, given the hot weather that many of you are enduring at the moment!)

No reaction on Sunday from the cycling on Saturday evening (although I have a feeling that it didn't do anything help my golf - struggled to get into a decent rhythm during the round on Sunday morning...), so took the bike to work today. I had a seminar at the other main office today, so worked there all day - while it's the same distance away as the office I normally work in, I don't have to go up 200 feet in the last 2.5 miles - makes the morning journey that much easier. (Almost inevitably, the weather got me back for the journey home - had a nice little breeze into my face all the way home (when the prevailing wind is normally helping when I'm heading home at the end of the day). It's not a bad thing from the point of view of getting a better workout, but it's more fun to have the wind behind and work up a good pace than grinding along in a low gear into the wind...)

Physio tomorrow - I suspect that I'll get some exercises to strengthen the areas that are causing the problem, and might get permission to start running again...

Maybe a bit too optimistic with my post yesterday - things haven't cleared up enough for me to get permission to run yet. (To be honest, this doesn't really come as a surprise - I was a bit late leaving work to head to the physio, and I was feeling a little twinge just from walking fast...) There has been some progress, though - the muscles that were really tight a couple of weeks back are getting back to normal (and I've been given some exercises to strengthen them), and getting out on the bike is fine. I suspect that I won't be taking the bus to work very often over the next couple of weeks!

Sorry to hear that you can't run yet! Dang!

Did you enjoy the tour this year? My husband was glued to the tv whenever he had time, and I watched a lot with him. Saw some nasty crashes...

Sorry for not responding sooner, Peg - have been pretty busy over the last week or so, and haven't had time to get on the forum. I'm feeling better (the stretching and strengthening does seem to be helping quite a bit), but am trying to convince myself that it's a bad idea to try some running before I'm back at the physio on Tuesday. It's hard to ignore that little voice saying 'a little session of two minutes jog, one minute walk won't hurt'...

The Tour was good to watch this year - didn't know who was going to win until the final time trial, and the last two mountain stages were great to watch, with two of the top guys (Andy Schleck and Contador) going on the attack early. (Cavendish winning the green jersey was good, too - definitely in a class by himself as a sprinter (although it will be interesting to see how he does without the HTC team around him.)) Some of the crashes were tough to watch - I actually saw the 'media car' incident live (the one involving Flecha, van Hoogerland and the barbed wire fence), and couldn't believe what I had just seen!

Agreed about the media car crash. That was just brutal. Hoogerland is a champ for his performance after that.

The polka dot jersey presentation at the end of that stage was a great moment - showed just how much it meant to him. (One thing relating to that incident that's been overlooked is just how close Thomas Voeckler came to being caught up in it - if I remember correctly, he was clipped by Flecha as he went down, and had to ride over the grass briefly. A few inches of difference means that we don't get the great story of Voeckler giving his all to stay in yellow through the Pyrenees and into the Alps...)

A little update - I gave into that little voice that I mentioned in my last post, and went out for a short run this evening. OK, it was a little over a mile (so wasn't even 10 minutes), but it felt good to simply be able to get out and run. The hip felt pretty good for the most part - a little achy on the outside just below my pelvis, but I'll spend a bit of time on that area with the foam roller tonight.

Post  MartinD Thu Aug 11, 2011 5:53 pm

A bit of progress since my last post - saw the physio on Tuesday, and have been given permission to start running again on condition that I keep it very short to start with (he suggested no more than a mile for the first couple) and build up gradually. Given that I've already pushed it a little bit with last Friday's run, it probably doesn't come as a surprise that I did 2 miles on the treadmill yesterday, and another 2 this evening (after being told not to run on consecutive days...)

I'll admit that I have been pushing it, but I am still looking at doing the marathon - at this point, though, it's more about finding a way to get round rather than thinking about how fast I can complete the 26.2 (given that I'm only just starting to run again and the race is seven weeks on Sunday!) To that end, I tried a little experiment on Monday - it would be a big surprise if I didn't have to walk a reasonable proportion of the distance in the race, so it makes sense to me to get used to walking long distances (playing golf doesn't really count - lots of stop and start) and being on my feet for that length of time, so I decided to walk home from work. This ended up being 12 miles (as I took a couple of 'long-cuts' - different ways to get home that added a bit of distance) in pretty much exactly 3 hours - had a couple of minor physical issues (a blister on one of my toes, and a little bit of tightness in the back of my left thigh), and remembered why I didn't like walking in my orthotics (my heels tend to move around a little in my shoes (as I have relatively narrow heels, but need the wider-fitting shoe because of my forefoot), so the backs of my heels were a little tender afterwards). Other than these things, though, the walk went well (and was a nice opportunity to take time to think over a few things!) - will probably try something similar again this week, and might add in some short runs for a bit of variety.

I've been out for a couple of runs since my last post - still pretty short (3 miles yesterday evening), but it's good to be back out on the road again (and better to be pretty much pain free!) The aim over the next few weeks is to continue to build up the distance I'm running reasonably gradually - if things go well, I think that I could get to the point where I'm able to run 12 or 14 miles about 10 days out from race day (which isn't ideal preparation, but should be enough to allow me to get through the race running most of the way).

Whatever happens in early October, I've now got something definite to aim for in the spring - put my entry in for next year's Edinburgh Marathon this evening...

Thanks, Kenny - it's a good feeling to be simply be able to go out for a run without having to think about how much it's going to hurt!

Apologies for the lack of updates over the last couple of weeks - have been pretty busy, both at work and when I get home. That doesn't mean that I haven't been running, though - have been able to continue to build up my distances, to the point where I felt able to try a run to work on Thursday (admittedly after knocking 3 miles off the distance by driving to a free car park a bit closer to Edinburgh - still left 7 miles to run, though). I've also been taking the bike to work fairly regularly - at least a couple of days a week over the last month or so, which has been a good way of keeping things ticking over while I've not been able to run as much as I would like.

I made a mistake by not getting out for a run yesterday in good conditions - meant that I needed to get that run in today, and had to make the choice between heading out on a windy day with heavy showers likely or doing the run on the treadmill. I took the more comfortable option of staying indoors, and had a really smooth run - got into a nice rhythm early, and kept it going all the way through. I think that it helped having something decent to watch - had today's stage of La Vuelta a Espana waiting, and that kept my attention well enough for me not to be constantly thinking about the numbers on the treadmill display in front of me. (It was a good stage, too - mountain-top finish with some steep sections on the climb.)

Today's run meant that I've done 22 miles over 3 runs this week, plus a couple of days of cycling (roughly 10 miles morning and evening for each, taking about 75-80 minutes in total) - while this is quite a long way short of what I'd ideally want to be doing to prepare for a marathon at this point (5 weeks out from race day), it's a lot further on than I expected to be at this point. I'll need to wait to see how I feel in the morning (if there's any reaction from today's long treadmill run), but I think that the aim of getting through the marathon on 2nd October is looking more realistic at this point.

A couple of things that I'm thinking about at the moment:
- Given how my recent runs have gone, and that I have a relatively quiet weekend coming up, I'm thinking about entering the Great Scottish Run half-marathon next Sunday. It's a race that I've run before - while it's a bit of bother to get to Glasgow (and to get parked!), and there's quite a bit of congestion in the first mile or so, it's a pretty good race, with some nice variety in the route and lots of support for the runners. It wouldn't be an all-out effort, but it would be useful - given that the last race that I took part in was last year's Edinburgh Marathon, it probably isn't ideal to go to the start line for Loch Ness with no racing experience for close to 18 months!

- I'll have an opportunity to get a pretty good deal on a new bike through my employer in the next few weeks - there's a Government scheme that allows you to buy a bike tax-free (effectively getting 25% off the price and being able to pay it off interest-free over 12 months). The bike I'm currently using (a Trek hybrid) has been solid and reliable, but it's definitely tempting to buy something that would make the commute to work a bit quicker (and would be something I could use if I wanted to get more into cycling or triathlon...)

Post  MartinD Tue Aug 30, 2011 5:24 pm

After Sunday's run on the treadmill, I thought that I'd have a go at doing a similar distance on the roads by running to work this morning. It ended up going pretty smoothly - felt comfortable all the way through, although the legs were starting to feel a little tired towards the end, and didn't have any issues in the hip/groin area. I was a bit surprised at the splits when I looked at them afterwards: 8.05/8.00/8.02/8.02/7.58/7.53/7.52/8.11/8.10/8.26, with the 10.22 miles taking a total of 1:22.31 (average pace of 8.04) - didn't expect to be keeping such a consistent pace... (The last three miles are uphill - the route that I normally use to run to work is effectively 7 miles along the coast (relatively flat), then going up about 200 feet over 3 miles as I head into the middle of town.)

The main reason for running this morning was that I was back at the physio this afternoon - means that I've already got my run in for the day, so it's not too big a deal to rest up for a day or two after the physio session if needed. Today's session was reasonably positive - things seem to be improving (even though I've done a fair bit more running than had been recommended last time!) There does seem to be an underlying issue with my hip, though, so I'll need to go back in a few weeks for a bit more work.

Does anyone else (that doesn't take a music player with them) get a song stuck in their head when they're running? It's something that happens to me fairly regularly - normally the last song that I heard before I started the run. That wasn't the case today, though, as I had Never Ever (All Saints) stuck in my head for most of the run - not a bad song for the run, though, as the tempo fitted in nicely with my stride pattern...

Post  MartinD Sat Sep 03, 2011 7:15 pm

After Tuesday morning's run (and the afternoon physio session), I was half-expecting to feel a bit sore on Wednesday, but actually felt good enough to go to the running club training session on Wednesday evening - probably a mistake in hindsight, as the session ended up being 16 x 1 minute, initially with 1 minute recovery but working down to 30 seconds for the last few. The session actually went surprisingly well given that I basically haven't run faster than marathon pace since starting back after the injury, but I was definitely a bit sore on Thursday and Friday! Taking the bike to work on Thursday helped, and I had a rest day (with a bit of stretching) on Friday.

The legs were getting back to normal today, so I went out for a run in the early evening to see how they felt - was initially intending to do 6 or 7 miles, but got into such a nice rhythm that I ended up doing 10... The pace was pretty good, too - most of the mile splits were on the low side of 8.00, and I finished the 10 miles (plus the normal little bit extra) inside an hour and twenty minutes. I was feeling that my legs were getting a bit tired towards the end of the run, though - definitely an improvement over the previous 'sore', but a bit of a concern when I'm trying to get through 26.2 in only four weeks...

Post  MartinD Mon Sep 05, 2011 12:19 pm

Thanks Kenny - Saturday's run was a nice surprise.

Today, on the other hand, was a bit of a struggle... While I felt like I was in a decent rhythm, it felt like I was working pretty hard for the pace I was running at, and the last few miles felt pretty tough. The numbers for the run back this up - finished up with an average heart rate of 158bpm (with no Garmin-related spikes or jumps to skew the average), and an average pace of close to 8.30/mile.

The route that I chose was partly responsible - as there's a fair bit of elevation change in the route for Loch Ness, I wanted to get some uphill and downhill into today's run, so decided to give the hill from Wallyford up to Tranent a try. It's not particularly steep, but the rise is fairly steady - about 200 feet in a mile and a half. I actually felt OK going up the hill, but inevitably my pace suffered (the mile from 5.5 to 6.5 ended up being 9.10, although that mile saw me climb 140 feet). It was good to get some decent downhill running, though - Loch Ness has a pretty significant drop in elevation over the first few miles, and it's something that I will need to work on.

Weather wasn't really an issue - while it was sunny and relatively humid (for these parts, at least), I started the run early enough in the day to get some decent conditions - think that it was in the high 50s at the start of the run, and pushing into the 60s by the end. It's noticable that it's starting to get a good bit colder overnight - not a surprise now that we're into September, but one of those signs that suggest that it's time to start looking out the cold-weather clothing...

The big positive from today's run, though is that I managed to get through a little over 13 miles without any issues - am feeling a little sore at the moment, but it's more a 'I've just done my long run for the week' feeling rather than 'something's going to go wrong soon...'. While I'm definitely going to be going into the marathon undertrained, getting through a run like this gives me a bit of confidence that I'll be able to get to the finish without too many issues.

It's something that happens to me fairly regularly - normally the last song that I heard before I started the run. That wasn't the case today, though, as I had Never Ever (All Saints) stuck in my head for most of the run - not a bad song for the run, though, as the tempo fitted in nicely with my stride pattern...

All the time, and sometimes they are pretty stupid ones!!!! Seems like the injury is better?

Thanks Jim - was one of those runs that was tough to get through, but I'm glad that I stuck at it.

Good to hear that I'm not the only one! Had a pretty silly song in my head for today's run - Moneybox by Eliza Doolittle. Very simple, almost childish, but also very catchy...

The injury is better - still not completely over it (in that I still have a bit of an ache, particularly in the first mile or two of a run - think that I need to do some work on strengthening the appropriate muscles in that area), but it's good enough for me to be able to get out and run on. I'll admit that I've pushed the boundaries of what my physio has suggested I should be doing - to be honest, I wouldn't have been quite as aggressive with bumping up the mileage if I didn't have Loch Ness coming up.

The recent lack of updates on the blog is mostly due to me being on holiday for the last couple of weeks - not ideal timing with a marathon to run in less than two weeks, but that's the way that things worked out. I have been doing a fair bit of running, though, although I didn't do much in the first week (ended up playing 7 rounds of golf in 5 days, which limited the time available for running). I got out for five runs last week, for a total of 33 miles - a couple of recovery runs, a couple of longer GA-type runs and a decent hill session (was in eastern Pennsylvania, in an area that doesn't have a lot of flat ground - made it a lot easier to find a suitable hill than it is at home!)
