Where To From Here...

Post  Paula Sue on Fri Apr 19, 2013 2:07 pm

I had to go back to my old blog to see where I left off...and it is absolutely embarrassing Embarassed December 2011. There has been 'life' between December 2011 and April 2013...a lot of life...but sadly, not a lot of routine running. I've often asked myself,"What has happened to that part of you that couldn't survive without the challenge, without running against those folks so darn much younger than you, without making your age groupies keep looking back watching for you, listening for your footsteps." Quite honestly, I can't look back. I have to close that book and move forward.

Setting up goals is a bit easier now since Todd has totally recovered from his surgery and we are once again running together. At least for a while. We're both really out of shape. Todd is now 64 and I'm 65. I'm not using that as an excuse. It just seems to take stepping way back to move toward to goal of running straight through a mile, then linking the miles together.

Currently we are in Cape Coral, FL. We will be going back to Ohio mid-May. That's the plan. Todd and I are getting out between 6:30 and 7:00AM in the mornings to run. Currently we are trying to run/walk 3 days a week.

Next up, I am setting up my training schedule, eyeing the Space Coast Marathon, 12/01/2013. I don't need the state for 50 States. We ran the Gulf Beaches Marathon for Florida 10 years ago. We should be back in the Cape by then and it would be convenient. It looks like a good marathon to get back into distance running.

Those of you who have followed the great boat adventures, Ocean Breeze (OB) goes back in the water (L. Erie) May 24th. We will be preparing her for long distance boating. We hope to bring OB back down to Cape Coral late summer or early fall.

Where to go from here? Only one answer: Forward! I can't wait to follow your progress as you get your body back into distance running.

Hi Paula Sue! We all have life stuff and I can't tell you the toll the last 1.5 years has taken on my body and consequently my running....but I know you can do it and try not to compare where you were with what you can do now and just do what you can push your body into doing right now. Glad to see you back !!!

Re: Where To From Here...

Post  Paula Sue on Sat Apr 27, 2013 1:44 pm

This week really pushed my buttons for running...well, running/walking. I haven't had the desire to go out the door for almost two years. It feels good to want to run.

I took time to go back and fully fill in my logrun for 2013. I was surprised to find I have actually run (well, run/walked) over 100 miles since Jan. 1st. I really thought I was much lower than that. Heck, my Asics DS Trainers have over 200 miles on them! That was a shock too.

What wasn't shocking was my weight. That's the next thing to get under control. If I can't get a downward trend by the time we get back up north, I'm going to have to pay Weight Watchers a visit. That in itself will be embarrassing. I was one of their poster children back in 2003. Did pretty good for a long, long time. I'm going to hate cutting back on my mid-week pizza and beer. Heck, I'm going to hate trading my Yuengling for BudLight or Michelob Ultra. YUK!

Todd's putting together a bike for me as I write this. His comes in Monday. We want to add biking on the days we aren't running. I look forward to exploring on two wheels instead of sitting in this recliner.

So that's this week in a nutshell.

Good for you, Michele! I thought of you as I worked on my Logrun this morning and wondered if you were going to do any part of the Cleveland Marathon May 19th. I miss coming over and running the 10K. Can't do it again this year...I don't think we will be back in time. Our next Ohio race will be the Kelley Island 10K. We're going to get together yet, 1'L' !!!

Thanks, Natalie. You have a full plate that tends to get in your way. Retirement has worked well for either good training OR full relaxation. It's really necessary for me to move away from the latter and back into the former Exclamation

BTW, I may be penciling in the Columbus Marathon. Looks like we might leave Ocean Breeze on L. Erie one more winter which would give us more time in Ohio to run some fall races. SO, how about you? Are you still thinking about Columbus?

Re: Where To From Here...

Post  Paula Sue on Mon May 06, 2013 11:15 am

Another good week in the training log and yet another week here in FL. I've found the key to getting out of the house and away from the recliner...put on my running clothes as soon as I get out of bed. The other key is it gets Todd away from his computer and into his running clothes. As soon as he's dressed, we're out the door.

Todd is doing well with our slow come back. He's had little to no pain from his cervical discectomy and fusion. Any discomfort is no different from what he was experiencing being sedentary. He's even seeming more excited about racing. He's still thinking he's out of marathoning for the rest of his life. I'm not so sure. I think once he gets into the half marathon distance, as long as he has no change in pain we will see him increase his distance.

I'm feeling great! I've got to get away from the run a minute/walk a minute program. If I can get some runs in without Todd, I may do better with that. During our running segments, he runs quite a bit faster than I do. It's always been that way and I'm fine with that. I just can't maintain that pace for two minutes right now, let alone a full mile!

We leave for Ohio in 2 weeks so we'll be back to running with friends on the golf course as well as running our routes around Lake Erie. I really think that change will help me get back to looking at miles and not minutes. I'm excited to get back to my routine in the north but I will miss our winter home here. I'll most certainly be just as excited to come south in the late fall.

Re: Where To From Here...

Post  Paula Sue on Sat May 25, 2013 1:41 pm

We've made the transition from Florida to Ohio. I did have an excellent week running the last week in Cape Coral finishing it off with a 5K. I've been trying to run more and walk less with some success. However, in the race itself, I ended up walking a bit more in the second half of the race. To my surprise, even with those walk breaks I dropped time in each mile.

My desire is to get back to running complete miles with a walk break at the beginning of each mile. I'm still having a lot of difficulty with my breathing in that first mile. I've found my best miles (as in years past) begin at Mile 4.

This week (May 19th through today, May 25th) has been difficult and tiring. We left the Cape early Sunday morning (May 19th) and arrived in Findlay Monday afternoon (May 20th). I managed to get two runs in while unpacking, washing, repacking, making two runs to the boat on Lake Erie and finally getting her launched yesterday (May 24th). Starting to feel my age...of course, some Captains and diet and a few rounds of good red Merlot last night REALLY slowed my progress today! We didn't get to bed until 2AM, visiting with dockmates late into the night. So there went this mornings planned run. Will get back on the horse tomorrow morning. Think I'll just lick my wounds today...and enjoy being back on Ocean Breeze.

Re: Where To From Here...

Post  Paula Sue on Sat Jun 01, 2013 1:06 pm

Still adjusting to the back and forth life we lead when we're 'up north' for the summer. I didn't get in all of my planned runs this week. When I did run, I tried running by feel and not by my timer. I really hoped my endurance was enough to guide me into fewer walk breaks. My first run of the week on Wednesday was good for that. I managed to go from 4 walk breaks a mile to two. I felt good and my overall time demonstrated it. Thursday was another story. I was short of breath, my legs were heavy and I decided to go back to walk 1 minute/run 1 minute. That worked and my times surprised me. I actually dropped 15 seconds per mile. Weird! I still really, REALLY want to get back to running a full mile without walking.

I had my annual physical this week. Doc says I'm the youngest 65 year old he has in his practice. That feels good...and so do I. I've had some back issues. My doc is a D.O. so he adjusted my spine. He does a great job but I can't afford to see him twice or three times a week. I've decided to try chiropractic. Will go to one my doc recommended next Tuesday. Although I have to say, my back exercises plus mega doses of Ibuprofen seem to be working. This isn't a new problem. It comes and goes...part of the territory my age has taken me into. Hey...every day above ground it a good day! Keep wiggling!

Well what a mess we've created this time Sad  While Todd and I were washing the boat Saturday afternoon, I tried to make a 5 yard touchdown with a scrub brush landing full force on my extended right arm.  Laying in full splat position, Todd had to bring my now useless right arm down to a neutral position.  Long story short, xrays at the hospital didn't demonstrate any fractures.  Monday I saw my orthopod, yesterday I had an MRI, tomorrow I find out what's next.  Obviously I haven't gotten to continue with my training plan.  More later.

I saw my orthopod today.  I tore my right rotator cuff and am scheduled for surgery July 11 unless there is a cancellation and I can get in sooner.  After that, I will be immobilized for 4 weeks except for passive exercises and PT.  Once the immobilizer is off, I will have 4 more weeks of PT.  By mid-September I should be back to near normal...I hope.  Unfortunately until I start running again, there isn't much to blog about...so I guess I'll sink to the bottom with all the other riff-raff.

Just an update...still waiting for surgery.  It didn't get moved up...it remains July 11th.  Also had three more skin biopsies during my routine visit to my dermatologist...all three are basal cell Ca and on my face.  The Mohs surgery for those is scheduled for July 22nd.  Sometimes lots of things seem to come together at the same time.  Hope when this is all behind, my training will come together the same way.  I haven't given up the idea of being ready for Space Coast Dec. 1st.  I'll just have to realign my training to reflect a different goal...not thinking Boston qualifier but being thankful to leave 'the dark skies' in Ohio to find 'better weather' in Florida.

Re: Where To From Here...

Post  Paula Sue on Sat Jul 20, 2013 4:43 pm

Surgery was done a week ago (7/11/2013)...many said 7/11 were lucky numbers and that was a good sign.  I sure hope so.  The doc said the rotator cuff was worse than he expected.  The surgery took him two hours instead of the one hour he'd planned.  Seems not only did I totally tear the supraspinatus tendon from the head of the humerus, but I also tore the tendon that attaches the bicep to the humerus.  He said it was so close to a complete tear he didn't know what kept it from going all the way.  Of course if it had, he'd have had to go searching for it and my bicep somewhere down in my arm.

I'm glad it's done.  I'm stuck in a sling and swath for the next 4 to 6 weeks which allows me to do nothing.  At least at the beginning of this week, Physical Therapy gave me the okay to leave it off during the daytime as long as I don't activate the muscles in my upper arm.  That ain't easy...but the pain is an instant reminder.  I'm still tethered to my ice machine a good part of my waking hours.  I have to sleep in the sling and swath which is problematic.  I'm a side and stomach sleeper learning to sleep on my back.  Much like the right handed person I am learning to become left hand dominant.

I saw the doctor for my first post op visit Thursday.  You all know what my first question was...when will I be able to start running.  His answer was 3 months...I quickly came back with,"September, right?"  He said he couldn't calculate that fast.  I said,"Good, then September it is." Twisted Evil

So my life consists of going to physical therapy twice a week (where I swear they are trying to twist my arm off while telling me to keep my arm muscles flaccid...are you kidding?!?!?), doing my own exercises here at home 3 times a day (stretching the arm through full range of motion while keeping it totally limp...that ain't easy either), icing either with all those fine ice packs I've collected over the years or tethered to the ice machine and working my way through things that used to take no time at all (showering, dressing, combing my hair...which I had cut really, really short before surgery).

I'm watching the calendar.  September seems so far away.  Heck, October seems like it's in another century!  I'm hoping...really, really hoping my physical therapist can be tipped over into letting me start running as soon as the sling and swath are gone for keeps.  That could be as soon as 4 weeks.  It's kind of like playing mom and dad against each other.  I asked the doctor if this was our last visit.  He said no, he'd see me at least two more times.  This 'dad' is keeping his fingers on the pulse Suspect   BUT I don't give up easily.

Next week, I'm going to start walking the neighborhood.  I promise I won't make any of those steps running steps.  My goal is to keep myself from any more falls!

Healing is going well.  Still not able to use my right arm and it's in the immobilizing splint most of the time.  Sleeping is a b**ch.  The passive range of motion exercises are going very well.  When I have my physical therapy twice a week, every therapist that works with me says I'm ahead of schedule.  I just hope that gets me back to running before mid-October (the doctor's prediction).  I will be reevaluated tomorrow by the head therapist.  We'll see what gives then.

This interruption in my life has really given me something to think about...more so than the achilles tendon repair.  This interruption was so quick...in the blink of an eye I went from a very active 65 year old runner to a totally immobilized senior citizen.  Both Todd and I know it's so important now to know what we are doing and how we are doing it...not just take for granted we are where we think we are in every activity.  This ain't fun!!!  I don't want to screw myself up like this again.

Back on the racing circuit...well, kind of.  We stayed in Findlay this weekend.  I is Balloonfest Weekend and there is a lot of activity around this huge hot air balloon festival.  It is also our running club's biggest even...the Up, Up and Away 5K.  Todd and I were out with friends last night.  They were going to run the 5K this morning.  I mentioned to Todd that perhaps we should run the 5K too.  He looked at me like I had 3 eyes.  I said I would be walking it if he ran it.  He gave a 'no' to the idea.  Well, I got up at 6AM and Todd was already up.  He said he thought he'd like to go run the 5K.  Heck yeah...I'm in.  I did walk it...I now have my slowest 5K recorded ever (53:36).  I did run the last 1/10th of a mile...you just can't walk over the finishline in front of all those people cheers .

Congrats on controlling yourself for *nearly* all of a 5K, Paula Sue!

I'm sure you must be climbing the walls (well, if your arm would let you) for all this enforced inactivity, but you're doing the right thing in letting this heal up properly. The last thing you'd want is a messed-up shoulder for the next 30 years.

Still, after reading everything you'd torn in there with your flying touchdown move, I'm amazed at how well you coped until surgery. You are one tough cookie!
