Come Back to Boston
Week 1 of Boston training has begun and in snowy conditions. My schedule only called for easy, shorter runs except for the addition of 20 sec pick ups on Thursday and a longer run today (75 min). Of course, we had snow last Friday, this Thursday, and this morning, so it has made for interesting outdoor running. I was able to run on the plowed all purpose trail at the local Recreation Center on Thursday, but this morning we ran in the Metropark which was plowed after Thursday's 5 in, but not this morning. It took 1:30 min to cover 8 miles in 3 in of snow, but we did it! Here are some pictures of the hearty (aka stupid) group.
As you can see, there wasn't much of a path to run on!

Re: Come Back to Boston
It may not have been a perfect run from a by-the-numbers training standpoint, but it sure looks like a lot of fun to be frolicking out there in fresh snow. Good job!

Re: Come Back to Boston
Sounds like fun! I raced this morning in Forest Park in St. Louis, and while we didn't have much snow, it was really slick in a few spots. I really don't mind the snow, but if the ice never shows up I'm a happy camper.
Sounds like you're getting back to it successfully too.

Ah, you're doing a great job of embracing winter and all that goes with it. It's inspiring because I'm a total winter wimp. Is this running path near your home? That would be great and probably would get me out there if it was foot steps from the porch.

Re: Come Back to Boston
Dot - the "Emerald Necklace" as they call it is a 50K trail that circles the city (to the south side as obviously the lake is to the north). It connects with the Towpath (gravel trail along the old Erie-Ohio Canals) and Buckeye Trails which also can take you for miles in the areas south of the city. The western/northern entrance is just shy of 3 miles from my house, so I can actually run there and do if I am doing a longer mid-week run. I have to be careful at this time of year though as the all purpose trail is pretty empty. During the spring, summer, and fall, there are tons of people, lots of kids using the fields for soccer, baseball, and soccer and there are 4 golf courses. It is quiet at this time of year during the week. The group usually meets at one of the parking lots in the park, but sometimes we run from the local store and enter the park at the north entrance. www.clevelandmetroparks.com
Last week was the beginning of my "Boston" training although I am still really just slowly increasing mileage for the next 3-4 wks before I get into the heart of things. My achilles appears to be about 95% and I am pretty healed from the recent surgery although I do have some interesting days. The hardest part is getting motivated to run with the cold and snow/ice covered sidewalks and roads. I'm not yet used to it again and I don't like to run inside if I don't have to. I'm planning on doing my easy, recovery, and long runs outside when it really is about the time rather than the speed or mileage. For the little bit of speed that I need to incorporate I can use the treadmill or local indoor track.
A quick recap of last week:
Mon - 40 min easy
Tues - Day off for Christmas
Wed - 40 min easy
Thurs - 50 min with 8 x 20 s pickups
Fri - Day off running - workout on treadmill with Jillian (you walk at 4 mph at 15% incline for a 30 min total)
Sat - 1:30 min run (8 miles in the snow and ice)
Sun - 30 min easy
Total miles: 27 miles

Stay safe with the ice and snow packed streets/paths. I am not running in the dark until things clear up. here's hoping for an early spring.

I'll drink to that
Re: Come Back to Boston
Thanks for making me feel like a sissy for resorting to the treadmill so often.

Re: Come Back to Boston
With trails that close, I'd be hard pressed to stay indoors as much as I am, especially in the spring/summer/fall. We have a tiny little 1 mile loop trail-ish park near me and only 2 miles away but I'd get killed by any number of drivers just trying to get there so I have to drive. Makes no sense, but there you have it. I'll do the 1 mile loops for shorter runs when necessary, too many other places to go if I get in the car.
So, I'm envious of your trail situations as well as your group run. Ah, to find a group to run with...that would be 2013 bliss!

Well, if I had quality runs to do now, I'd be running them indoors as well. In fact, I ran my 6 miles yesterday since I had 10-12 pickups to do, and I wanted to make sure that I could get them done as they should be without dodging ice and snow.
I'm a New Englander and will be forever, Michael, so I love the North as well. I just have forgotten how to run in the snow/ice as I haven't done it since Winter, 2005 and it seems like ages ago when I was much younger .mountandog wrote:I love the North Michele. yes -weather can be a pain or a pleasure depending upon your viewpoint. love the pics.
I'm glad that there is the group here or I would be in trouble for sure. It sure helps me get fired up for every weekend long run as I know someone else will be suffering along with me. It does make those weekday runs go by. I'm very spoiled as in the summer, I have people to run with almost everyday.dot520 wrote:With trails that close, I'd be hard pressed to stay indoors as much as I am, especially in the spring/summer/fall. Re: Come Back to Boston
Week 2 is complete, and yes, there are indeed hills in Ohio in case you were wondering.
An excellent course for an out and back 10 over hills, hills, and more hills. Starting to feel a bit like my old self, but I know I am still a bit away from where I would like to be as I felt every bit of the last 2 of those 10 miles.
More pictures from the run. The rock is half way up the first hill which is over a mile long. Not sure if it is better to be half way up or not?

Re: Come Back to Boston
Looks like a fun group to run with, and some pretty country to run in, Michele. That's got to make it a little easier to get out when it's cold and gray.
Speaking of cold, do you expect these conditions for the rest of the winter? At least the road seems to be clear now - running those hills on hard-packed, icy snow could be a little challenging, to say the least. Got your screw shoes yet?

Good luck on your upcoming Boston training. We have similar Achilles issues, mine seems to be an occasional nagging ache now. I too love the pics, especially the one with the guy near the tree, looks like he's getting ready to pee. hehe

Re: Come Back to Boston
Michele, I am not one of the regulars around here but I will be coming back to check your blog. I am also shooting for a sub-4 at Boston this year but have been dealing with achilles issues and am not where I'd like to be. My weekly mileage is about the same as yours at this point and I'm also getting used to running in the cold with ice and snow, so we have a lot in common!

Great pictures Michele! My limited experience with running in the cold is that the runs are fun, but things get very unpleasant when sensitive parts get cold .... Good luck!

Re: Come Back to Boston
Michele - great looking pictures and nice elevation. Those are some decent hills for sure. Good luck on Boston training. From "Almost Famous".... It's all happening!
Re: Come Back to Boston
I gotta say, those pictures are exactly what I think early base training should be. Friends, impossible-to-race terrain, and just good times getting the legs moving again. Happy birthday!

Re: Come Back to Boston
Just a discouraging day - I am running slower than frozen molasses in Alaska in January and it is frustrating. I know I need to be patient, but it is so hard when you are running at the same HR as a year ago and a minute plus slower - just frustrating.

Happy {belated} birthday Michele. I missed it on FB and figured it was better to say a late one here.

You know I experienced this when I came back from an injury and I just made it a point that the journey I was on was not about pace or HR but just to get out and run. I gave myself I think 18 weeks to rebuild and you know what I was back feeling like my old self in 8 weeks and ran one of my best 5 mile races week 18.
Maybe deep six the HR monitor for a few weeks.

OR... just keep focusing on the HR monitor and stop obsessing about your splits.
It takes time for the body to rebuild mitochondria and generally get back into the swing of things. The secret now is to work into it gradually - at a lower intensity rate for a while - to make sure you get back to where you want to be without getting hurt or burned out in the process.
It's frustrating, to be sure. But it does work.
