dot520 wrote:Last Friday I picked up some sort of super virus that will not let me out of it's grips. I've had a variety of lovely symptoms, Lung congestion, nasal congestion, a fainting episode that landed me in ER for a few hours and now I'm missing some skin off of my lower leg from the fall and bruised thigh, lack of appetite causing a 4 lb weight loss so far, general malaise and a rotten attitude.
The Indy Mini is this weekend and I sit here wondering how I'd ever make it 13.1 miles. Will there be a miracle? If it was just nasal congestion I'd go by the rule of 'above the neck' = racing, but this lung congestion is problematic. Lots of hacking.
At this point I'm up a bit in weight as my appetite is coming back so..126.6 lbs this morning. Why me?
Why you, I'm sorry Dot and I prey for that miracle that is going to get you to that starting line. See you there.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
So sorry to hear that you are sick - not the way, I believe you wanted to lose more weight. You can always run/walk the Mini if you just want to get out there to enjoy the atmosphere of a race. Take care of yourself!
Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
No miracles appeared, Tim and Michele. I did step down to the 5k and ran/walked that. I'm glad that I had sucked it up because I don't think I would have made the 13 miles even walking. My lungs are not acting properly at all and even for a 5k I had congestion problems. It is what it is and there goes a perfect running day without me. At the same time, these things happen and now I'll just have to change things around a bit and see if I can get some strength back. My doctor friend is now telling me to expect this to last 10-21 days. I'm on day 10...tic, tic, tic,.
I was going to restart a new session of eating for 6 more weeks and that may help me get better. At the same time, any running I was planning on doing in the next week or so will be walking or bike riding. I need to heal and then I'll get it all back with time.

You'll heal fine, Dot. We heal a little slower, these days, but we heal. Then you'll be back pushing your body forward again.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Thanks, Ounce! Sad but true, we do seem to heal a bit slower....however, I am rebounding and now just have the occasional cough but everything else is working out fine. Tomorrow will be my first run all week. Really looking forward to it.
So, still good on the weight. I gained some back from my 'lost weekend' and then stablilized and went back down so at 127.0 lbs, I'm good with this. It's time to come up with some sort of summer training schedule. I'd like to do a number of 5k's this summer for speed and still keep a base for a half marathon this fall. Actually, I plan to do 2-4 halfs this fall.
On with the show.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Bumping myself up to the top because I don't want to keep company with the Riff-raff that Paula Sue mentions! LOL
Not much happening with me, running about 15 miles per week right now in a maintenance mode and plan to start my training in a week or so. The halfs that I have on my radar for the fall are:
Blues at the Crossing - Sept 14- Terre Haute
Mills Crossing or somthing like that - End of Sept, Columbus, IN
Monumental -Indianapolis, Nov 2 or 3
Lots of choices for October, possibly Indianapolis but I'm pretty much done with that one. We'll see.
August is a doubler, 10k followed by a 5k with a rest in between.
July - possibly a 4th of July 6 miler downtown Indy or a 5k in Franklin that's I've done in the past that is small and fun.
Weight is still good, around 127 and holding. I'm happy to just stay at this weight for a while and then see where it goes from here. I'm not being as strict as I was at the beginning of the year and that is probably why I've not lost any more. It's all good.

I'm glad you're feeling better now after that embrace with the virus from hell. That sounded nasty.
Maintenance mode sounds good right now as you get ready for what looks like a busy season of racing. Have fun!

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Life is good! I've been able to stay on my meal plan in the strictest fashion since Gene is down in Tennessee getting his rating for hang gliding. Not having to worry about other people eating makes my life easy. This will change on Sunday but that's fine. For now it's salads bigger than my head with everything on them.
Had time today to do a 3 miler this morning outside and then snuck another 3 miler in this evening on the TM since I'm not in the mood to suck up exhaust for the traffic this time of night.
I'm so happy that Mr. Matt started the points and stars because I'm an overachiever when it comes to this type of thing. Expect me to be posting late into the night. I need at least 1400, I think, to get on the top poster list. hmmm. how to accomplish this. I know it can be done in a blog............

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Today was to be a 6 miler and I was more enthused to do yard work while it was cool out this morning than I was to run. So there you have it and this is why my training is crap! Lol Yes, I realize that running isn't getting top priority in my life but it's all turned out for the best. Got the yard stuff done and the grocery shopping finished and now it looks like a major downpour is here....guess I'll hop on the ole TM and get it done today after all.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
I woke up this morning with a new look at how I'm going to train. Usually I spend the winter getting ready for the Indy Mini and then slack for a month and get ready for the fall halfs. I don't do anything different, I'm bored, I'm usually still not as prepared as I should be and I'm not PR'ing. SO.....I woke up with a new idea.
This past winter I've lost weight and that is something I intended to do and can rarely do when training. I've also stablized the weight loss although I know I have more that needs to come off but I'm happy right where I'm at for now. I rarely do a more than trudging along during my base building. I think this summer I'll do speed work instead and build a base that's fast versus back packing speed. I don't have a schedule right now, and I'll have to make something up but for now I will build endurance so that I can make through at least 2 half marathons this fall that I'd like to do but spend most of my time ramping up the speed. You can't run fast if you don't run fast. Where have I heard that?
Speed = what does that mean for me. I'd like to running more in the 10:00 min/mile arena for short stuff initially. Today, after my 6 mile trudge of yesterday I put in 4 good miles of fartleks, running 1 minute/12:00/min/mile and then 1 min/10 minute mile and continued for the 4 miles. That felt really good.
Some of this inspiration comes from watching the track and field prelims to the Moscow games yesterday. My problem is I underestimate my capabilities. I need to change the theme playing in my head.
It's all good

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Finished up a busy and somewhat stressful work week so I was glad that I was able to get a few short runs in as well as bike riding.
Today's longer run...just 6.5 miles was so much fun. I'm glad that I decided to do the speed thing. I did a one mile warm up then proceeded to do 4 miles of intervals of all sorts maxing at 10:00 min/miles finishing with another cool down mile. Fun! That's the key and it felt great. I was getting a little discouraged with my trudging but I think all of May was just recouping from that lung virus I had. It feels good to run a bit faster. As the summer goes on, I'll kick my repeats up a notch and then some.
Yes!! I feel renewed!
p.s. Will be biking during my many hours watching TDF this month. That'll be decent cross training.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Ran a slow recovery run of about 3.5 miles and then rode the bike for 30 minutes in front of the TV watching the end of yesterday's Stage 1 TDF. I'm back to watching that. I just can't keep away.
Planning a trip out to So Cal mid August to see my dad...I'm hoping he'll still be able to sherpa me on his bike when I go for my longer run. Not sure if he's been biking much, best get him on it.

I happened upon coverage of the tour while channel surfing last night, and couldn't help but watch for a while.
They should just run commercials for PEDs while the guys ride - it would be a little more honest coverage!

Believe it or not, they announced at the beginning of the show that they believe that 90% of the teams are doping free. Of course there is a 40% population of rookies this year, in the 19-22 age group. Maybe they're clean and just athletic....hmmm. Don't know, don't care at this point.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Booked a flight out to So Cal to visit my dad. I've told him to be sure he's in shape for my 8 mile run when I'm out there. He's my sherpa on a bike as I run down the Santa Ana river bank towards the beach. He tells me he's getting a new bike and will be all set by the time I get out there in 6 weeks. This coming from a man who turned 90 years old earlier in the year. I'll be sure to get a photo of him as he zooms by on a cruiser! gotta love it!
Cross training today will be Rowing, biking and hill walking.
I'm so looking forward to the 4 day weekend!!

No, my dad is a short drive to the beach and about a 3 mile run, max. I'm going in August and even then if it hits mid 80's it's a heat wave.

Julie: I just saw that in the Racing forum....definitely on my list. Not sure if I'll trash myself at the Monumental the weekend before but if I do, I can use the Veteran's as a recovery enjoyable run.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
So, what have I been up to. I've been a tad remiss in updating my blog.
Over the 4 day weekend of July, I worked so that wasn't much a 4 day weekend. I did get to take the 4th off and spent that time with Gene downtown on the canal. We rented a surrey and biked around for a bit, then watched an Indians (AAA league) baseball game and all the fireworks. My plans for running a Saturday morning race got thwarted by an emergency babysitting call at 9pm Friday night and not getting home until 1 am compoounded by not setting the alarm and oversleeping. Booo! I had a few to choose from here and that was too bad. Ended up working anyway.
My long run is up to 8.5 miles and I'm still incorporating speed work into my weekly runs and loving it. Today will be a one hour recovery run as soon as I get off of here.
The weight is still good....I've managed to maintain for over 2 months and now I'm ready to take my food intake seriously again and nourish my body, not just eat.

Re: Lowering the boom - 2013
Had to take the ole Camry in to the shop today....I only have one motor mount....WTF????? I was told to get that fixed or try not to accelerate very quickly...WTF???? Where does a motor mount go? Drop off as I'm toodling along? $425 and I'll have the girl back again for hopefully some more carefree riding? I took it in because it was noisy on acceleration. All that motor rocking and rolling. Bleh!
Today was 3.5 miles of speedwork, intervals going up to 10:00 min/mile pace. They're getting much more comfortable so it'll be time to up the ante when I do my Tempo run later on this week or next. Goody!
