Recovery Leg road to running
Many of you know I had my leg shattered on August 24, 2010 and have a Titanium rod in my left leg with five screws. I'm just to the point of seeing some good results. I ran a 1:34 Half Marathon on September 3, 2011. I'm doing another one on November 5th. Not sure what my future holds for marathon, which used to be my true passion in running. Only God knows what's in store and I will just follow his path.
Anyway Training:
Ran 9.11 miles of the Just Cuz half marathon course. It went well.. my quads were a little sore from the last 11 and 10 mile days. My Daughter also ran 7 miles of the course.
We started at 6:15am above Mink Creek Rd. I stayed with my daughter for a little over a mile then we separated after that. She slowed down. My wife followed us all the way down, because there's no way I would let my daughter be alone up there and that early in the morning. I had some good stretches in the course and it was good to expose my titainium rod leg on some downhill :-)
Splits
7:10, 6:58, 7:07, 6:58, 6:52, 6:52, 6:54, 6:32,6:15

Hey Kory,
I'm glad you found your way here. The training is looking good. I still think you will make it to the top of the mountain and victory will taste very sweet!!

Hey Kory, great to see you over here. A 1:34 HM after what you went through is pretty awesome. I'm glad you're able to get back to some pretty serious training. Keep up the great work.

Thanks it's been a interesting journey, but there's always someone else that's had it harder.Dave Wolfe wrote:Good to see you here. Always love your great attitude, work ethic, and how well you've come back after the accident.

Thanks Seth... I'm trying to figure out how to approach the HM in November because I think I should be able to run faster or just for fun.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
Oh, and can I borrow that rod as I'd love to run a 1:34 half (again)
Re: Recovery Leg road to running
My weeks runs have been good and bad sore far, but I've developed some sort of soreness on the top of my foot that's going to cause me to have to swim tomorrow and maybe Friday.
Monday
Ran 8.41 miles alone in the wonderful dark at 6am where half the time I couldn't see where I was because of the route. I finished in 1:03:34 at a 7:34 pace. Did the last mile in 6:47 just to pick it up. My Rod leg still really sore today. Sometimes the pain is worst than other days. Really sore still from the three in a row days of running hills.
Tuesday
Ran up Olympus and Fairfield Dr. getting hill work again today in the rain. Did 8.40 miles at an overall 1:01:30 time with an overall 7:19 pace. Sort of did a tempo at a pathetic pace 6:37, 6:55, 6:49, 6:50. By the last mile the rain let up somewhat. But it really came down during the run and was kind of fun. I have a little soreness on one side of my right foot, that's giving me a little pressure pain that I need to watch close.
Wednesday
Ran 6.31 miles at an overall 7:54 pace in 50:14 minutes. My ankle was very painful and will probably have to take the next couple of days off from running to heal. I tried just taking it slow and easy today. By 4 miles the pain was a 8 out of 10. But I've had sciatic nerve pain and Achillies Tendonitis so I knew I could finish the run with this type of pain. I've just learn to run with pain even though it's not the best choice.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
I haven't done the running blog training report for a while because I was doing a lot of training in the gym. I had a very sore tendon on the ankle that felt somewhat comfortable when I used the arc trainer.
Leading up to the Half Marathon that I ran on November 5th I didn't even run one 10 mile run three weeks before the race (I think anyway). The ankle was sore all the way up to race day, but was about 60% on that day. So a 1:31:37 was very humbling to run.
November 7th did 5.06 miles at a 7:25 pace and did one in 6:58. I was very surprised I wasn't
too sore.
November 8th - Nothing really about this run it was just run for 1 hour and see how I felt. I did 8.13 miles at an overall 7:29 pace in 1:00:46.
Splits 7:59, 7:33, 7:19, 7:21, 7:27, 7:26, 7:23, 7:20.
Running after just finishing a race it's just about getting out there and not thinking what your running. I like these times to just reflect on life.

Thanks I try to hang in the blog. My time is so precious that it's hard to do it day to day anymore like before.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
‎7.6 miles in 12 degrees weather yesterday and 8.2 miles in 15 degree temperature today (November 10). All under a 7:30 pace. I really don't like cold weather and the rod leg doesn't either. The insertion point and the top of my quad on that leg have a lot of tightness. I really need to stretch it for some considerable time to see if the tightness can be relaxed a bit.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
It's been a while since my last reply. I've been busy with a lot of different projects and changes. First off I won my settlement with my accident. Enough to pay off all the hospital bills and a little extra cash, but not much. That doesn't matter the more money you have than you just want more. I'm just glad I won removing the guilt that it was my fault when I know it wasn't but you still feel guilty. In your mind I was thinking what if I wouldn't have ran that day. But I guess a driver not paying attention to the road and hitting me can happen anytime.
My wife decided to leave the big daycare facility that she was part owner of to be back home and have it in our house again . We made significant changes like remove my entertainment room and re-paint. I would do anything to make my wife happy, because my heart is with her. She was successful at home before and was actually persuaded to move out to a big facility when we were home before. There's less one on one interaction with parents in a bigger facility. She missed that from the home Childcare, and parents need that as well.
As far as running I've been running/averaging 50 miles per week over the last 6 weeks. My fastest mile was 6:07. I pretty much average between 7:10 to 7:28 per mile on normal daily runs. Still not sure if I will run anymore marathon's, but definitely half marathons. My life changed after getting hit. I realized I was spending too much time with running and not in over area's. But I will still be out there.
This morning I ran 9 miles at a 7:18 pace.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
Kory,
Your last post was heartfelt. You really seem to be in a good place with all that has happened and is going on. Your optimism and clarity on "life" suits you well.
You are also looking very good with the running. Amazing 50 per week and very healthy pace!

Thanks, Kory for the update. Keep on keepin' on and you will always remain an inspiration to me regardless if you ever run another mile.
Re: Recovery Leg road to running
Thanks for the update Kory - I agree that you are a complete inspiration with the heart of a lion. Can't imagine coming back from something like that - and it looks like your speed is coming around too.

Glad to see your update. Glad you got the settlement and that it helps a little with the guilt. That's great your wife can have her daycare at home, too. Thanks for updating us.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
One thing to note on my runs the weather has been between 8 degrees to 20 degrees. This morning it was 13 degrees. I do notice some stiffness in my titanium leg before it warms up. My longest run of the year so far is 13 miles.

Re: Recovery Leg road to running
It was -3 degrees outside so to motivate myself to run I did hill intervals. 300m x 5 reps. I did a total of 7.22 miles at an overall 7.06 pace. My hands were pretty cold even with hand warmers. I really don't get cold in this weather when you wear underarm our with a light north face jacket.

Thanks for the update, Kory. I'm glad you won the settlement - it was justified - and that things are going so well for you, your wife and your running. Fifty miles a week and a few half marathons sounds pretty good to me, even if it's a little chilly where you live this time of year.

11.3 miles today on a hilly uphill course at a 7:09 overall pace in 1:21. It was 9 degrees outside, but I felt fine in the weather. Summer does seem along time away.
