Re: NY, NY - Redux 2012

Post  Michele "1L" Keane on Sun Nov 11, 2012 12:48 pm

Of course just as I am going to be shut down for a few weeks, my running is finally coming together and I'm starting to feel normal. The achilles has not bothered me running at all the last couple of days and I am running a faster pace than I was just 2 wks ago. I'm sure it is a fact that all the pressure is gone, but that is also kind of weird if you ask me. The last two days have been spectacular here in Cleveland - 50F in the morning and mid-60s during the day - and I'm guessing that this is it before winter comes. I will be going to Atlanta for Thanksgiving and I hope to be able to run around 1:50 for the half. It is a tough course and my achilles might now quite be up to all the hills, but I know the course as well, so I know how to run it smartly, and well, you never know. The weather might feel warm to me though as after this spectacular weekend, it is supposed to be only a high of 40F on Tuesday with a low of 28F. Maybe I'll get lucky and that same cold front will be in Atlanta and at least I won't be freezing like everyone else.

Surgery is schedule for 11/26. Last time I had this, I was walking "distance" in three days and running in a week. I must admit that I do not think I was in as good a shape as I am today since I didn't do a lot of miles after I ran Big Sur in April and the procedure was done the end of June. I did pace Chicago and run NY that fall very successfully, so I am anticipating that. The difference is that it was summer, and of course, the weather was fine and motivating. I trust that you will all help me get through the winter. After all, it will not be 89F in April in Boston in 2013 - it can't.

Re: NY, NY - Redux 2012

Post  Michele "1L" Keane on Sat Nov 24, 2012 12:44 pm

This will most likely be my last entry in this blog as I completed my last run for a few weeks this morning - 6 ridiculously hilly miles here in Atlanta in the 39F Ohio weather. It was great to run this recovery run with my old running buddies as i do miss them and the times we had over the last few years. None of us had a great Fall and we are blaming it on my being gone as I was the motivator in the beginning that got us all together.

Ran the Atlanta Half on Thursday, and although I was 9 min slower than last year, I still managed a very comfortable run at 1:50 and change. This was quite an improvement over Akron (1:55) over a much tougher course. I am very pleased with the run especially since it is not an easy course wit the first half being mostly down hill and the 2nd half being mostly uphill. It was excellent weather being around 45F at the start, but it did get a bit warm for me over the last couple of miles since the sun came out and I have't run in warm weather in a while. I was very glad to be wearing a singlet instead of long sleeves, and I was shocked at how warmly many people were dressed. I really love this course and race, but I'm guessing that I won't be coming back next year.

My procedure is scheduled for Monday afternoon and I will not be running too soon after that. I am hoping to be able t run around Christmas and get back into training by then for Boston. I'm guessing I'll start a new blog when I am back at it.

I'll be sending healing thoughts your way! Perhaps a nice 4 week interim blog would be nice. Will you be needing just straight rest or will you require PT?

Thinking good thoughts for you as you prepare for your procedure. Heal fast, and get back out there soon.

Thanks, all. I can write an interim blog, but since the procedure that I'm having is not running related, but old lady related, you might not all be interested Smile Of course, hopefully the achilles will finally totally heal during the time off (I'm kind of counting on it since it is really about 85-90%).

To a stronger and healthier 2013 for us all!

Pfft. Of course we're interested.

It'll keep you from running that day, right?

Surgery went well and I am in the re-cuperation mode. It will be a few days before I believe that I am completely coherent. I was able to look at my splits from Atlanta though, and I am very, very pleased with what I ran. You can even see where the climbs and descents are (the first half of the course is net downhill).

Mile 1: 8:37 (slowest mile of the run - yeah!)
2: 8:14
3: 8:18
4: 8:08
5: 8:29 (1st climb)
6: 8:28
7: 8:22
8: 8:36 (rolling mile)
9: 8:22
10: 8:19 (short downhill)
11: 8:24
12: 8:14
13: 8:10
.1: 7:15 pace

I think I executed those 13.1 miles quite well.

Well, it is 9 days post procedure, and I actually ran 2.2 miles today. It was slow, but I was also dressed like the Michelin man since it was very windy and 30F. I felt pretty good, but will take it all one day at a time.

Great job on the run, Michele! So glad you could get out there. I ran one step yesterday on a walk with my daughter and it hurt badly enough I'm staying away for at least another week.

That's a testament to what great shape you were in going into this situation. The standard 4 weeks probably pertains to everyone.
